Czechia’s magnificent castles, palaces, and national monuments, managed by the National Heritage Institute, will open their doors to the public on Saturday, April 1, as the nation’s tourist season officially starts. The Institute has taken the opportunity to introduce a variety of new tours at numerous monuments throughout the country. This year, it also plans to mark the 300th anniversary of the death of Baroque architect Jan Blažej. In addition to state-administered sites, privately-owned chateaus that have remained in the possession of their original aristocratic families will also be welcoming visitors. Year after year, Czechia’s abundant architectural and cultural heritage attracts millions of tourists, both domestic and international. According to the National Heritage Institute, 3.4 million people visited these historic landmarks in 2022. As well as new tours, many castles and chateaux are preparing a themed program for Easter from April 7 to 10. On Saturday, April 1, Prague’s Deputy Mayor for Transport Zdeněk Hříb unveiled a new road sign prohibiting entry to trams. The official posted a picture of the novelty on his social media accounts. “Due to numerous requests, we are introducing a new sign prohibiting the entry of trams. Our patience for the negative effects of tram traffic is overflowing. Trams are taking up space on the roads, obstructing the passage of cars and creating traffic jams. Now that has come to an end,” joked Hříb.
Czech Post will shut 56 offices in the Moravian-Silesian Region by the middle of this year, followed by Prague, which will lose 35 branches. Česká pošta will shut between 13 and 24 branches in the remaining areas. In total, the number of branches is to be reduced by 300 to 2,900 by 1 July. The cuts are necessitated by a sharp decline in demand for postal services. According to newly approved regulations every municipality of over 2,500 people must have a post office within a distance of three kilometers, not two which was the previous norm. The move has raised concern among elderly people living in small villages whose branch is due to close. Opava Mayor Tomáš Navrátil (ANO) considers the plan an outrage. “The situation is even worse because we learned about it from the media. No one from the management or the ministry discussed this matter with us. Prague City Tourism in cooperation with the National Library of the Czech Republic are launching a new route through the premises of Prague’s Clementinum, starting on 1 April. The Baroque Tour can be taken exclusively with a qualified guide, giving tourists the chance to admire the unique building including the Baroque library. This special tourist route, including the Astronomical Tower of the Clementinum, will thus join the eight monuments which Prague City Tourism is currently responsible. The operators expect over 50,000 visitors to the Clementinum in the course of the year. “The National Library of the CR is quite unique, not only in its services to readers and researchers, but also in terms of its historical location. I am delighted that it will open up to Prague tourists. Allegro is preparing to launch its marketplace in the Czech Republic, according to a post on its website Allegro.cz. The post says that “One of the largest European marketplaces is coming to the Czech Republic” and that “The final countdown begins. Soon.” Allegro has been expanding internationally for some time. It acquired Czech e-commerce platform Mall Group and logistics business WeDo in April. It also launched an English language version of its flagship site Allegro.pl in early 2022. “Our team is now focused on the upcoming launch of Allegro.cz in the Czech Republic,” said Roy Perticucci, CEO of the company. The Polish group already took the first steps towards the integration last year, when the logos of CZC and Mall e-shops were marked “by Allegro”. Czechia disagrees with the International Olympic Committee recommending on Thursday that Russian and Belarusian athletes can compete in international competitions as neutral competitors. The recommendation published Tuesday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommends that athletes with Russian or Belarusian passports must compete as Individual Neutral Athletes while suggesting that team sports should be banned for both countries. “I am disappointed with the IOC recommendation. We must not close our eyes to reality. Russian sport is centrally controlled from the Kremlin,” Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said. The IOC has not yet decided whether it will allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. However, Lipavský is convinced they should be banned from all international sports events, including the Olympics. Meanwhile, the Czech Olympic Committee launched an expert group that must look into legal arguments to ensure Russian and Belarusian athletes do not participate in the upcoming Olympics. Czech labor unions on Wednesday joined with opposition parties to protest the government’s proposed bid to raise the retirement age by four years to 68. Some 2,000 protesters gathered Wednesday in front of government offices in the capital Prague to voice their opposition to the plan. “We definitely don’t agree,” read a letter ratified at the gathering. “We will defend ourselves,” Roman Durco, the head of the KOVO labor union group that organized the rally told the angry crowd. Labor and Social Affairs Minister Marian Jurecka recently appeared to backpedal on the original pension reform proposal but his ministry said in a statement said that the retirement age raise remains on the negotiating table. Korean Air will connect Prague with Seoul, South Korea, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The fourth connection on Saturdays will be added from June. This new route will significantly boost the currently absent capacity not only to Korea, but also to other destinations in Asia with traditionally strong demand, for example Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, alongside Indonesia and Australia, using connecting flights from Seoul.
