The population of Czechia increased by roughly 16,700 inhabitants to 10.5 million last year, according to the Czech Statistics Office. The upward trend was driven mainly by migration. Roughly 57,000 people immigrated to the country in 2022, while around 20,000 emigrated. Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick has been voted the best Czech footballer of the year for the second year in a row. The 27-year-old defending champion won the title in a poll conducted by the Football Association of the Czech Republic, coming more than 200 points ahead of Fiorentina midfielder Antonín Barák. The ČEZ Energy Group reported a record net profit of CZK 80.7 billion last year, up from CZK 9.9 billion the previous year. When it comes to investing in property, buying a house or apartment for yourself is not the only option. In this article, I’m going to talk about some other options that can get you on the property ladder. Of course, the most common investment is a property for yourself, either as a short-term solution with the idea that it will increase in value and you can sell it for a profit when you’re ready to move on, or leverage its value to buy something bigger and better later. For some, this kind of personal investment can last for generations too. 1: Buy, but get flatmates to help cover the mortgage repayments Another option, similar maybe, is to still buy something for yourself, but to buy bigger than you need and get flatmates in to cover the extra mortgage repayments through their rent contributions. Along with buying something to live in yourself, this is probably the most common option, and probably the easiest to realise value on. Given the rate of inflation, money kept in the bank is effectively being devalued, whereas if you invest in property, your investment will most likely gain value and with this option, you’re likely...
Czech Chamber of Deputies Speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová is scheduled to lead a delegation of more than 160 officials, reporters, and experts to visit Taiwan this weekend. It will be the biggest delegation to visit Taiwan since Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil visited Taiwan in 2020. The delegation’s itinerary also includes speaking at the legislature and attending a meeting on economic cooperation and a forum on net-zero cities. The Czechs’ centre-right government has sought to develop relations with Taiwan which has become one of the leading foreign investors in the EU member state. Newly elected Czech president Petr Pavel drew a sharp rebuke from Beijing in January after taking a call from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen, a clear shift from his predecessor’s attempts to win Chinese business. The Foreign Ministry says Taiwan and the Czech Republic are partners with similar principles and interactions between the two countries have been increasing. China, which claims Taiwan as its own, has called lower house speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova’s planned trip, due take place on March 25-30 after a stop in South Korea, a “wrongful decision”. “From Taiwan’s perspective, this is the largest foreign visit in its modern history, and from our perspective it is the...
The story of what we can possibly call Prague’s longest existing pub; a place full of legends, stories, and crime. Jedová Chýše, also known as the Poison Hut, is probably the oldest and most legendary pub in Prague. It has a fascinating history dating back to the 13th century when it was originally established as a pub for locals and travelers. It was located in shadow of the St. Apollinaire Church in the New Town, and is surrounded by countless myths and legends. One of the most popular rumors surrounding Jedová Chýše concerns Wenceslas IV, who supposedly visited the pub on a regular basis. Legend even suggests the pub was named after an incident involving two of Wenceslas IV’s enemies, who were allegedly poisoned after their attempt to kill Wenceslas IV in Vienna. However, other probable rumors suggest Jedová Chýše’s name was derived from the 19th century and was based on the pub’s reputation as a place where medical students would go to drink and socialize after their studies. Jedová Chýše did not have a great reputation, and often attracted crime. According to legends, one of the pub’s owners used to tie spoons to chains attached to the table to...
Prague has one of the most beautiful skylines in Europe. Getting above the rooftops as often as possible is highly recommended, and there are many places to both eat and drink at rooftop venues. The following few rooftop bars are our personally recommended ones. Unfortunately, they aren’t going to be your most affordable nights out, but they will be your most memorable. 1. Terasa U Zlaté studně Address: U Zlaté studně 166/4, 118 00 Malá Strana, Czechia Phone number: +420 257 533 322 Terasa U Zlaté studně is one of the best-kept secrets of Prague’s Lesser Town, hidden away in the cobbled back streets. The panoramic views that this gorgeous terrace offers are truly second to none, making it one of the best rooftop bars in Prague by far. It sits atop a 16th-century building that has privileged views across the city’s rooftops, perfect for a photo backdrop. This is a rooftop restaurant where it isn’t all about the view, though, because the food is also fantastic. 2. Strecha Lucerny Address: Pasáž Lucerna 110 00, 110 00 Nové Město, Czechia Phone number: +420 604 707 686 The Strecha Lucerny rooftop can be found on top of the Lucerna Palace, with beautiful views of the...
Prague City Tourism is hoping to attract new demographics to the city, distancing itself from its reputation as a party destination. Given its low cost and abundance of bars, Prague holds a reputation as a cheap city to drink in, with young tourists and backpackers flocking to the city under the allure of cheap drinks and parties. Struggling with this reputation, the City of Prague is designing methods to attract different demographics to the city, focusing on the vibrant cultural scene Prague has to offer. Additionally, a new app is in development, and will soon be available online for tourists – providing them with a brief introduction to the culture in Prague, alongside a catalogue of self-guided tours and cultural events. The research for the app was assisted by scientists from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Ten versions of the app will be available, covering the ten countries that tourists most often travel from. The most frequent foreign visitors come from Germany, Poland, USA, Great Britain, Italy, France, Spain, South Korea, Israel and China/Taiwan, with visitors from each country seeking a different experience from the city. Each version will highlight different events and landmarks, based on the tourists’ country of origin. The app’s release is slated for the end...
Construction Company, Metroslav, has begun large-scale renovations on Prague Department store, OD Máj. Given its status as a cultural moment, many elements from the original building will be preserved – a decision made in agreement with preservationists. “We would like to open Máj to the public in a modernised form in the first half of 2024. The total costs after the completion of the complete reconstruction will reach four billion crowns,” said developer Václav Klán, who manages Amadeus Real Estate. Chief Architect of the renovations, Milan Mlady, believes the project will reinvigorate the area as a cultural and entertainment centre. Metroslav is making efforts to maintain and preserve the original appearance of the monument. During their planning phase, they collaborated with the original architects, Martin Rajniš and John Eisler, and additionally consulted both urban planning and historic preservation groups. “Even after the reconstruction, the house will look like it is the original house, it will just have a full-fledged new cladding, except for the facades, which are distinctive,” said Mlady. The building – standing on the site of the Neo-Gothic Šlik Palace – was originally completed in April 1975, and declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture in 2006.
A Czech medical volunteer who, as part of the Phoenix project, was helping with the treatment of Ukrainian soldiers on the front line, was killed over the weekend. The spokesman for the Czech Foreign Ministry confirmed it on Monday. This is the second such case in the last year. The Phoenix project said in a Facebook post that the volunteer is being transported home to the Czech Republic. “One of our brave medical volunteers in Donbas received shrapnel wounds. His condition has stabilized now, but the situation is serious and it is impossible to predict developments. We are doing everything in our power so that he can return to his homeland as soon as possible,” it was stated yesterday. The victim was an important member of the Phoenix group, who saved 25 people during the last trip alone. As reported, as part of the Phoenix project, Czech medics in eastern Ukraine train soldiers to provide first aid and transport the wounded from the front lines. Since the onset of the conflict, the Phoenix Association has been involved on the front lines in Ukraine, beginning in April 2022. Comprised of volunteers, the group offers material and medical assistance during battles and in areas affected...

Consumers in Czechia used one-fifth less gas year-on-year in 2022, the lowest amount in eight years. President Petr Pavel has suggested that Ukraine should use the opportunity for a counteroffensive this year, as it will be extremely difficult to get help from its allies for another attempt in the future. He specified that “this should happen within a few months”. The Czech national football squad gathered in Prague on Monday ahead of their first two games in the qualifying process for next year’s European Championship...

New statistics reveal the influx of self-employed Ukrainians and Russians within the Czech Republic over the course of 2022 and 2023. Between 2019 and 2021, 207 Ukrainian entrepreneurs registered a new business per month, while in 2022, the average grew to 710 per month. A similar trend is apparent with Russian entrepreneurs as well, with 63 businesses registered each month in 2022 – an increase from the 51 per month before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These trends were reflected in recent analysis by the Czech Credit Bureau (CRIF). “The largest number of Ukrainians started business here from last August to November, when more than a thousand entrepreneurs of Ukrainian nationality started their activities every month. In some months, this was as much as 18 percent of the total number of new entrepreneurs in the Czech Republic. For January and February this year, the monthly average is already lower, i.e. 708, which is still a lot compared to the years before the war,” said Věra Kameníčková, CRIF analyst. Since March 2022, 15% of new businesses registered were in the manufacturing and construction industries, with nearly a third of these businesses founded and operated by Ukrainian entrepreneurs. Russian entrepreneurs on the...
