The 2024 Paris Olympics should not allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after the International Olympic Committee said it is keen to include them as neutral contestants. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) caused uproar after it announced that it is considering the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes as neutrals. While the US and the UN have widely backed the announcement, Poland, Ukraine, Baltic states and now Czechia, have sharply criticised the IOC’s announcements. “I absolutely cannot imagine Russian and Belarusian athletes competing there,” Fiala said while acknowledging that the sports sector has its own autonomy. Last year, over half a million free bike trips were made by the Lítačka subscribers of Prague, confirming that its citizens are getting used to pedaling around the city. Inspired by other world capitals, Prague wanted to expand its public transportation offers with another alternative – bikesharing. World-renowned Heineken brewery is spearheading a new concept for franchised pubs. Branded pubs have started to flood the Czech Republic in the past few years, becoming quite popular with brands such as Plzeňský Prazdroj and Budějovický Budvar. This year, Heineken is opening its own restaurant concept for the Zlatý Bažant beer brand. A new apartment building was built on Bieblova Street in Smíchov a few years ago. The street is named after the Czech poet Konstantin Biebl (by the way – the later poet fought at the front of the First World War in his youth; when he was twenty years old, he was wounded, captured, and sentenced to death – he saved himself by escaping from captivity). Therefore the architect and the developer decided that the new house would pay tribute to the poet in an unusual form – with its facade. The facade alternates between glass surfaces and fixed panels that hide the titles of Biebel’s poems in a jumble of letters. The panels made of special material have carved letters. During the day, the panels are white and the letters are black. At night, the contrast is reversed, and the illuminated letters stand out from the darkened facade. The letters are not arranged randomly on the panels, but the titles of Konstantin Biebel’s poems can be read from them. On one of the panels, the poet’s name is also included.
Prague, like many large European cities, harbours a variety of scams and frauds. A common scam involves performances with exotic animals, in which tourists pay for the privilege of taking a photo with snakes, coloured pigeons, owls, and a variety of other animals. During the pandemic, these scams seemed to vanish from the streets of Prague, but as tourists began to flock back to the capital of the Czech Republic, so did the people engaging in this illegal activity. Despite the concerted and continuous effort on the part of the Municipal Police, the eradication of this fraud has proven difficult – if not impossible. The spokeswoman for the Municipal Police, Irena Seifertova, informed the public that the most recent arrest involving exotic animals occurred on January 26th, 2023. The Prague zoo is going to open a new Arctic pavilion for polar bears. It will replace the existing one, which opened back in 1933. According to Deputy Mayor Petr Hlubuček, the cost of the project will be about CZK 800 million. The zoo may receive a building permit before the end of this year. If everything goes smoothly, construction will begin in 2023 and take about two years. It will be the largest investment in the history of all zoos in the Czech Republic. “The present polar bear pavilion is more than 80 years old and totally inconvenient.
