The Prague transport company has presented the restored articulated tram Tatra K2. With the license number “7000”, it will hit the streets on Sunday, February 5. It will operate daily and will delight the passengers on the retro route 23, as well as on the historic lines 41 and 42. The retro tram will also be available for rent for commercial and entertainment purposes. The Tatra K2 was manufactured by the Prague-based ČKD Praha in 1967-1983. It was the first articulated tram in the history of Czechoslovakia. The model was designed on the basis of the legendary T3 wagon. Curiously enough, the Tatra K2 was never used in Prague but only in Brno, Ostrava and Bratislava. In 2009, after 32 years of use, it was decommissioned and transported to the Krásnány Depot in Bratislava, but never put into passenger operation. Since the tram was not subjected to major structural modifications, it is preserved in exceptionally good condition with many original elements.
The Czech Republic’s incoming president said the only limit to weapons deliveries to Ukraine should be nuclear arms, and he expressed confidence that Ukrainian forces can defeat Russia. Petr Pavel, a retired NATO general who takes office in March, also said President Vladimir Putin’s government isn’t the only one to possess nuclear weapons. “I believe that we shouldn’t put any cap on equipment,” Pavel told Bloomberg Television in an interview in Prague Friday. “The only exception is nuclear weapons and direct involvement of NATO in the conflict.” Pavel secured a convincing victory over billionaire former Prime Minister Andrej Babis on Saturday after a campaign that pledged to return the Czech Republic’s highest office to the European mainstream. The Czech Government has decided not to extend the duration of checks at border crossings with Slovakia, and thus the checks will end on the night from Saturday to Sunday. The termination of the measure was announced on the same day by Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan. Prague Zoo has announced the birth of a rare baby pangolin. According to the zoo’s director Pavel Bobek it is the first pangolin to be born in Europe. The new-born weighs 135 grams and appears to be healthy, but the few days will be critical, Mr. Bobek has said. A rare baby pangolin was born early Thursday morning at the Prague Zoo. According to the zoo’s director Pavel Bobek it is the first pangolin to be born in Europe. “Just before 4 o’clock this morning, a Chinese pangolin female Run Hou Tang gave birth to a „pangopup“. This is the first pangolin born in Europe. It weighs 135 grams. However, it is important to add that the following days may be critical,” wrote on Instagram the Prague Zoo. The zoo acquired the pair of pangolins last April from the Taipei Zoo thanks to a partnership agreement between Prague and the Taiwanese capital. There are eight species of pangolins. Some of them live in Asia, others in Africa. In traditional Chinese medicine, the scales that protect their bodies are said to have a healing effect. Pangolins are unique among mammals because of their scales, which are made of keratin, the stuff of hair and fingernails. They live on a diet of ants and termites—hence their nickname “scaly anteater.” The scales are their major defense mechanism; when faced with danger, they curl up in an immobile, hard ball. The “Gift for Putin” project, founded by Czech businessman Dalibor Dědek, announced the transfer to Ukraine of two armored vehicles that will be used to evacuate Ukrainian soldiers wounded in battles with Russian aggressors. It is noted that as a result of the “Gift for Putin” project, almost CZK 383 million (15.8 million euros) have already been collected from the citizens of the Czech Republic via e-shop zbraneproukrajinu.cz and a number of necessary types of weapons have been purchased. From 2026 elections in Czechia may take place on Fridays only, not spread across Fridays and Saturdays as at present. The government approved an amendment to that effect on Wednesday, the minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan, told journalists.
