Next year, for the first time in history, a World Championship race will take place in the Czech Republic. The Central European Rally will start in Prague with the premiere of this new event scheduled for the 26th to 29th of October 2023. The twelfth edition of the series will be jointly organised by the national sporting authorities of Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. The Autoclub of the Czech Republic (AČR) and the series promoter officially confirmed the event on their official website today. Czech pubs are turning to technology to reduce the cost of putting glasses of beer on the bar for thirsty locals. With Czechs among the biggest beer drinkers in the world, brewer Plzensky Prazdroj plans to install sensors which will collect data on beer flow, as well as tube and tap temperatures. This will be sent to a cloud database and analysed to make recommendations on improving a pub’s systems, said Jakub Zaoral who is leading the Asahi-owned brewery’s Smart Taproom project. Plzensky Prazdroj hopes that by making adjustments its pubs will save up to 30 per cent of the energy needed for cooling and tapping their beer, a goal made more pressing by rising energy costs. “We will ‘x-ray’ and observe 45 pubs using 1,200 sensors which gives us the exact numbers, how our tapping system consumes electric energy and we will relate this with the beer flow and its consumption in the pub,” said Zaoral. Prague City Tourism has launched a live stream from Old Town Square, where tents are currently being assembled for the traditional Christmas market. The webcam will run until January 6, 2023, so everyone can take a peek at the market and get in the holiday spirit. The event is broadcast live from the Old Town Hall observation tower on YouTube. The Christmas Market at Staromak opens on Saturday, 26 November, and runs until 6 January (daily from 10:00 to 22:00, individual fast-food tents until 00:00). This year’s tree is a 25-meter tall and 58-year-old spruce that has made its way to the Czech capital from a small North Bohemian village of Kytlice. The tree is decorated with red Christmas balls and light stars of various sizes. There are 88,490 LED bulbs on the tree. The tree lights will be on daily from 16:00 to midnight. A light animation will take place daily at 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, and 21:30. Ukraine is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe this winter after weeks of intense Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. Up to ten million citizens live without electricity, while it has already begun to snow in several areas, with temperatures in some regions dropping to -10ºC. The European Parliament, together with Eurocities, a network of major European cities, has proposed to donate electricity generators to help Ukraine cope this winter. On the morning of Friday, 25 November, the Prague City Council approved the sending of a batch of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Direct flights between Prague and Bilbao will resume after four years. Spanish low-cost airline Vueling will start flying from 2 July 2023. The airline will fly between the cities twice a week – every Thursday and Sunday, using Airbus A320 aircraft for 180 passengers. Tickets are already on sale. Round-trip fares start at 170 euros. “After four years, Prague will have a resumed connection to the Basque Country. The Czech upper house of parliament approved a windfall tax for energy firms and banks, backing a measure aimed at raising state revenue to pay for aid to households and firms hit by soaring electricity prices, the CTK news agency reported on Thursday. Czech drivers may soon be receiving support through the EU Social Climate Fund for buying eco-friendly cars, said Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurecka (KDU-CSL), speaking to CTK today. The European Space Agency announced its new team of astronauts at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris on Wednesday – and among them is Czech fighter pilot Aleš Svoboda. Svoboda was the only successful candidate out of some 200 Czechs who had applied for the project. “For me, it was always a child’s dream,” Svoboda told Czech Television. “As a child, I used to go to the planetarium in Brno, always taking interest in space, aviation and space flights. For me, it is a logical continuation of what I do now.” The main team of the selected astronauts consists of two women and three men. Another 11 are in the reserve team. The City of Prague has plans to develop a new residential district for 25,000 people on a hundred-hectare brownfield in Bubny-Zátory. This time around though, urban planning is taking into account current crises, such as fossil fuel dependency and energy security, to offer an innovative solution – using treated sewage surplus heat to keep homes warm in winter. For this purpose, a new energy centre will be built next to the wastewater treatment plant on Císařský island and near the planned district. The idea behind it is simple, install 12 heat pumps and channel the heat where it can be of benefit – 200,000 households. Did you know that one of the most world-renowned explorers was Czech? His name was Emil Holub and his field of expertise was Africa. Though Emil Holub (1847, Holice – 1902, Vienna) obtained a medical degree, he didn’t become a settled physician like his father. Instead, young Emil whose full name was Emilian Carl Johann Holub, travelled to Cape Town, South Africa shortly after graduation. He then settled near and practiced medicine. He not only reached the Zambezi river but was also the first person in the world to make a detailed map of the whole region surrounding Victoria Falls. On Wednesday, the Railway Administration (SŽ) presented the winning design of the bridge that should replace the existing railway under Vyšehrad. The 2T engineering studio designed the three-track bridge between Výton and Smíchov. Only the lower part of the original bridge will remain. Eight historical buildings, mainly châteaus, castles and monasteries, have been added to Czechia’s list of national cultural monuments. Among them, is the Augustinian monastery in Brno where Gregor Mendel discovered the laws of inheritance by cross-breeding pea plants. Prague’s Pařížská Street has for the first time been ranked among the most expensive streets in the world in terms of rents in a ranking compiled by consultancy Cushman & Wakefield. Overall, Pařížská came in seventeenth place. It overtook Na Příkopě Street, which had appeared in the ranking since 2004. The most expensive street in the world is the upper part of Fifth Avenue in New York. Cushman & Wakefield annually compares 68 countries around the world by the highest rent achieved on the most expensive shopping street. The ranking always includes one most expensive streets from each country. The highest annual rent in Pařížská is EUR 2,719 (CZK 66,200) per square metre. In local currency terms, this is about the same as before the covid-19 pandemic. The 17th position in the world ranking is the highest ranking for a Czech street since 2005, when Na Příkopě Street finished in the same place. Overall, Paris is the thirtieth most expensive in Europe. Na Příkopě Street ranks 33rd in the European comparison with an annual rent of 2,460 euros per square meter. It’s exactly 81 years since the first transport of Czechoslovak Jews left Prague, bound for the garrison town of Terezín, transformed by the Nazis into a ghetto and concentration camp. They were sent there to prepare the town for the arrival of thousands of others – Jews from all over occupied Europe – who were crammed into the squalid barracks, and when the 18th-century fortress could take no more, into the surrounding houses. Lodged in a fortress built between 1780 and 1790, it was presented by the Nazis as a “model” Jewish community, with some visits permitted from the Red Cross and other observers. However, most of the 80,000 Czech Jews who died in the Holocaust died in Terezin, and of the 144,000 Jews who passed through the camp, only 17,000 survived — including, by most estimates, fewer than 100 of 15,000 children. Terezin was a transport point to Auschwitz; 88,000 Terezin inmates were ultimately shipped there or to other death camps. Many artists, musicians and highly cultured Jews were confined in Terezin, and much of the art and culture that emerged from the Holocaust was created there, including some 4,000 drawings by children, many of which are on display...
