Two benches with LED lamps and climbing plants have already been installed in Prague 6 (Dejvická and Hradčanská stops). The Czech government in an emergency meeting on Monday approved measures to limit the price of electricity and gas for households, small and medium-sized enterprises and public institutions. This was announced to journalists by Prime Minister Petr Fiala. The price cap is being introduced to compensate consumers for the sharp rise in energy costs across Europe. The maximum price of 1 kilowatt-hour of electricity for households is limited to 6 koruna, gas prices will be limited to 3 koruna. The measures will affect households, small and medium-sized enterprises, hospitals, clinics, local authorities, schools, nursing homes and other public institutions of public importance. Czech authorities expect that curbing energy prices will lead to a hold on inflation in the republic, which stood at 17.2% year-on-year in August. In the coming years, the Cabinet of Ministers will closely monitor the situation on the energy market and periodically adjust prices, taking into account the interests of national consumers. The government is also discussing options to compensate large high-net-worth Czech companies and industrial enterprises for lost profits due to rising energy costs. Former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has gone on trial over fraud accusations connected to a two million euro European Union subsidy that has marred his political career for the past five years. Prosecutors allege that Babis, owner of a chemicals, farming, food and media empire, now held in a trust, illegally tapped the subsidy to build a conference centre near Prague before he formed his anti-establishment ANO party in 2011. After an absence of nearly 40 years, trams are set to again run up and down Prague’s Wenceslas Square. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) is fulfilling the plan of returning trams to the upper part of Wenceslas Square. Today it launched a tender for the construction of a new tram line, the estimated value of the contract is CZK 1.25 billion. The Capital City Council gave the green light to the transport company for this project in January 2019. The construction should take a maximum of 48 months, DPP expects it to start in the first half of next year. Deputy Mayor for transport Adam Scheinherr says trams on Wenceslas Square should take the strain off other parts of the city’s transport network: “The new connection of the line from Vinohradská to Jindřišská and Vodičkova Streets should relieve the congested connections in the centre. Prime Minister Petr Fiala is set to attend late Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, president, Miloš Zeman told radio Frekvence 1 on Sunday. The funeral will be held on September 19, according to Reuters. President Zeman said that he had been forbidden by doctors to fly due to medical reasons and that he therefore asked the prime minister to attend instead.
