The new Vltava Philharmonic will be built by the Danish architectural studio Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Prague City selected a total of 19 applicants in an international competition. The Vltava Philharmonic Hall should have a total of three auditoria: the main concert hall for about 1800 persons, a smaller hall for chamber music with a capacity of 700 seats and a multifunctional hall for other genres and events with a capacity of up to 500 seats. Bjarke Ingels Group plans to complete the new building, which will cost the city about six billion crowns, in 2032. Should Russian gas supplies be halted, Czechia has sufficient reserves to last until the end of the summer, the country’s Industry Minister Jozef Síkela has claimed. Czech gas reserves are growing rapidly and had exceeded 1.287 billion cubic meters by Thursday morning, and domestic gas storage tanks are now almost 40 percent full, the minister revealed. “Compared to consumption in previous years, if supplies from Russia are stopped, current stocks should last at least until the end of the summer,” Síkela affirmed. Czechia Prime Minister Petr Fiala also confirmed the current capacity status Czech gas reserves. “Today, the tanks are already 40 percent full, and that’s a huge shift, and it’s the most ever at this time of year. People will probably no longer be able to drink alcohol after midnight (until 9 am) on either the right embankment at Podskalí or the left one at Hořejší nábřeží in Smíchov. Consumption of alcoholic beverages should not be allowed in about 1000 other places in the metropolis. The measure could take effect on 1 July. This is a proposal for an amendment to the decree on alcohol consumption in public places, which was discussed by Prague councilors on Monday. Prague City Hall councillors have voted to make Czech singer Marta Kubišová an honorary citizen, the Czech News Agency reports. Kubišová will receive the citizenship for her achievements in the realm of Czech culture, as well as for her personal bravery shown during the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia and during the subsequent normalisation era. Youth Marta Kubišová was born on November 1, 1942, in České Budějovice, during the height of WWII. She lived with her grandparents, mother, father, and brother. As the communists strengthened their grip over the country, the family moved to Poděbrady. Her father was a cardiologist. He closed his practice in 1953 because he did not want to comply with the regime, leading to his imprisonment for 3-6 months. Her mother was a housewife. Kotva’s entire fourth floor, with an area of over 2,000 square meters, will display some of the almost 12,000 objects that were acquired through a national collection in 2018. The museum will officially open this Wednesday, May 18. Visitors will be able to see how people lived in Czechoslovakia during the so-called normalization from 1970-1980. The organizers divided the museum into five main sections, showing the main components of the life of an average citizen of Czechoslovakia. The first section showcases the interiors of a typical apartment and offices of that time. The second one shows pieces of furniture made by Czechoslovak manufacturers. The third is about objects and design elements used in shops, canteens, schools. The fourth is about electronics, children’s toys, and clothes. The last section will focus on the politics of the 70’s and 80’s, which will show and explain the functioning of secret security, wiretapping of dissidents, and Czechoslovak socialist propaganda.

As refugee facilities in the Czech capital have become exhausted with no sign of the exodus from the war in Ukraine slowing down, authorities in the Czech Republic opened a tented camp in Prague on Saturday. The facility in the Czech capital’s Troja district can accommodate 150 people at present, and has been opened in an attempt to ease the crowding at the city’s main railway station. Aid organizations have for days bemoaned the undignified conditions in which refugees find themselves as they are forced to sleep in the corridors of the station for lack of anywhere else to go. Many members of Ukraine’s Roma population in particular are currently staying there, with photos of children forced to sleep on the floor making it into newspapers.
