The National Theatre of Prague presents Der Ferne Klang, an opera by Franz Schreker. Though several of Franz Schreker’s nine completed operas were hugely fashionable in his lifetime, none has a secure place in the repertory nowadays. The best known of them was the second to be composed, Der Ferne Klang, whose first performance in 1912 established Schreker alongside Strauss and Schoenberg as one of the leading modernists of his generation. Schreker wrote his own libretto for Der Ferne Klang; it’s the story of an aspiring composer, Fritz, who sacrifices his personal happiness and that of his lover Grete in his lifelong search for the “distant sound” of the opera’s title that he hears within himself. An influx of Ukrainian refugees into the Czech labor market will aid the country’s economy, but it could also compress wages, Štěpán Křeček, the adviser to Prime Minister Petr Fiala has told Czech news outlet Echo24. For several years, employment offices have been offering more places than registered jobseekers across Czechia. There are current 360,000 job vacancies with just 260,000 applicants. The Association of Bakers and Pastry Chefs called on the authorities to limit wheat exports, as the price of the grain has almost doubled year on year due to the fighting in Ukraine. If no measures are taken, the country may face a deficit of this key product, which will lead to a sharp increase in the price of bread, up to 60 crowns per kilogram. Many countries in Asia and Africa depend on imports of cereals from Russia and Ukraine, but now due to the war, they have to buy raw materials in other countries, including the Czech Republic. On Sunday, 27 March, the 2022 summer schedule comes into effect at Václav Havel Airport Prague. Throughout the season, Prague Airport will offer passengers a selection of 147 destinations, including 25 charter flights. A total of 58 air carriers will provide air connections with Prague. New routes, such as New York and Riyadh, will be added, while many other destinations will see increases in the number of frequencies, namely London, Madrid, and Paris. The number of operated destinations and active air carriers will reach ¾ of the record 2019 offer. “Compared to last summer season, we will offer passengers 19 more destinations, even though all Russian and Ukrainian connections are completely left out at this point. To compare, during the record year of 2019, 190 destinations were serviced from Prague. The 147 destinations, reached in 2022, represent 77% of the pre-crisis year offer. Artist Václav Kudělka finds humor in a dark situation by reimagining what the logos of these companies would say in his series of clever designs. The Czech graphic designer has been a fan of puns since he was a child and loves to find ways to incorporate wit into his creations. “I saw an opportunity to use wordplay to speak to the current situation,” Kudělka tells My Modern Met. “I wanted to talk about the way because I believe we have to keep talking about it to show that we care. Why would you pay CZK 2,000 for a Czech woman when you can have a Ukrainian woman much cheaper? That is the message being broadcast on Czech websites dedicated to arranging meetings with prostitutes. A businessman who regularly frequents the website brought the ads for Ukrainian women to the attention of the Women’s Protection Association, and they have in turn contacted the police. The unnamed businessman said that although he regularly visits the website, the ads for Ukrainian women disturbed him given that there are women and children fleeing the country due to the war. The Women’s Protection Association’s coordinator, Zdeňka Pecharová, confirmed that the first cases of abuse of Ukrainian refugees for forced prostitution had already begun in the Czech Republic. “We have information from specific men that when they make an appointment and arrive at the place, it is a dirty private house where they give women drugs and force them into prostitution,” Pecharová said. The National Theatre removed the opera The Tsarina’s Slippers by Petr Ilyich Tchaikovsky from the planned repertoire.
