Czech nationals will have the chance to join Ukraine’s defence forces to battle Russia’s invasion without fear of punishment at home, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Thursday. Under Czech law, it is illegal to join foreign armed forces without an exemption from the president who is the commander-in-chief of the Czech army. Violations are punishable by up to five years in prison. CTK news agency reported this week at least 300 people had sought an exemption to answer Ukraine’s call for foreign volunteers to fight Russia’s invasion. Fiala said after talks with President Milos Zeman on Thursday they had agreed to guarantee impunity for people who join Ukraine forces, rather than sort through individual requests. The Czech Republic has been a NATO member since 1999. The invasion of Ukraine, the biggest assault on a European state since World War Two, has caused unease in the former Soviet-era satellite states in central Europe, many of which border Ukraine and have seen an influx of refugees. It has also prompted growing interest in joining domestic armies. The Czech defence ministry has reported a several-fold increase in the number of potential army recruits.

Staropramen has suspended the export of its brands to Russia. “In connection with the war in Ukraine, we are suspending the export of our brands to Russia. Protecting our people is our top priority, especially at a time like this. We provide support to our employees of Ukrainian nationality who live in the Czech Republic,” said Denisa Mylbachrová, communication manager and spokesperson of Pivovary Staropramen. “We try to help their family members who come, for example, by providing accommodation. Lawmakers in the lower house of the Czech Parliament agreed Thursday to lift former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš immunity from prosecution in a fraud case involving European Union subsidies. The approval allows prosecutors to decide whether Babis should be indicted for his alleged involvement in the $2-million fraud. Czech police have repeatedly recommended Babiš’ indictment. It wasn’t immediately clear when prosecutors would complete their review of the case. Babiš denies any wrongdoing and has said the allegations against him were politically motivated. “Even though the charges are purpose-built, I’m not opposing the move when it comes to facts,” said Babiš. The allegations involve a farm that received EU subsidies after its ownership was transferred from the Babiš-owned Agrofert conglomerate of around 250 companies to Babiš’ family members. Later, Agrofert again took ownership of the farm. The subsidies were meant for medium- and small-sized businesses and Agrofert wouldn’t have been eligible for them. Men of working age are returning to Ukraine and women with children are heading to Czechia causing a labor shortage, complains the vice president of Czechia’s Confederation of Industry. Although most Ukrainian workers living in Czechia are not yet leaving to fight in Ukraine, the Czech construction industry lacks labor, with hundreds and perhaps thousands of them being unable to return to the Czech Republic due to closed borders. According to a number of construction companies contacted, a large percentage of Ukrainian workers return to their homeland every year at the beginning of January to celebrate Christmas, which takes place from Jan. 6 to 19. Many stay in Ukraine for a month or two, after which they return to work in the Czech Republic. However, due to the Russian invasion, a significant number have remained in their homeland. The winter just ending was the fourth warmest on record at the Clementinum weather station in central Prague since 1775, the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute said on Thursday. The average temperature recorded during the winter was 4.6 degrees Celsius; the warmest winter on record in Prague, in 2006/2007, saw an average temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius. February was a particularly warm month, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. The meteorological winter refers to the period from 1 December to the end of February. The average temperature during this past winter was 2.3 degrees warmer than the reference value calculated on the basis of data from 1991 to 2020. The second warmest was the winter of 2019/2020, with an average temperature of 5.1 degrees, while the third one in 2015/16, with an average temperature of 4.9 degrees. In contrast, the coldest winter in the last 247 years was measured by meteorologists in the centre of Prague at the turn of 1829 and 1830. Public support for Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine could constitute a criminal offense in the Czech Republic, the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office has confirmed. Igor Stříž, the current prosecutor general of Czechia, published a statement on February 26, in which he warned Putin sympathizers that support of the Russian attack or expressed support or praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin and others, could see them face criminal liability, according to Verenjnazaloba.cz. Striz’s statement cited sections 365 and 405 of the Czech Criminal Code, which state that whoever publicly approves a crime or publicly praises the perpetrator can be imprisoned for up to a year, and that anyone who “publicly denies, questions, approves or seeks to justify Nazi, communist, or other genocide” can face a jail sentence of up to three years.
