Czech archaeologists have made another major discovery in Egypt. 370 large vessels and other objects used during the mummification process in the sixth century B.C. have been found in a burial shaft in the Abusir necropolis by a team of Egyptologists from Charles University. The researchers found traces of natron, a substance used to dry the body, and detected residues of resins, oils, and myrrh in the jars. Unused limestone canopic jars, which were used to hold viscera removed from the body during the embalming process, were also recovered. “Interestingly, there were inscriptions on them including the name of the owner,” said team member Jiří Janák. “That’s what helped us identify the person to whom this deposit belonged.” “Among the objects, we found there were other smaller vessels as well as pieces of ashes from a fire that burned somewhere near the place where the person was mummified. We also found remnants of natron, a substance that the Egyptians used to dry the dead body.” Wahibre-mery-Neith, the owner of the tomb, is thought to have been buried in the structure adjacent to the mummification deposit, Janák explained. The team will continue to analyze the contents of the jars in an...

In recent years, Prague has been renewing itself with the reconstruction of certain streets in an attempt to make the city more ecological. This includes the construction of wider pavements, planting more trees, building new footbridges. The City of Prague, the Municipal District of Prague 7, the Institute for Planning and Development (IPR Prague), are jointly preparing the transformation of the public space between Letenské sady and Stromovka. The Korunovační and Nad Štolou streets as well as the Letenský Museum area, i.e. the area near the National Technical Museum and the National Agricultural Museum, will undergo some major changes. The shape of the district will emerge from a competition to be announced in the spring. So far, Prague 7 has presented the concept study for Korunovační Street by the studio edit! Architects. “The conceptual study will help us to coordinate individual projects that will change the character of this essential avenue in Letná. The aim is to coordinate the renewal of public infrastructure and other planned improvements. The study is to ensure the coherence of these activities and not to prevent the implementation of one project by another,” said Lenka Burgerová, Deputy Mayor of Prague 7. The study provides for...
Western-touted assertions about Russia’s plans to launch ‘an invasion of Ukraine’ on February 16 led to another fiasco for US intelligence agencies, President Milos Zeman of the Czech Republic said in an interview with the Mlada Fronta Dnes newspaper, published on Thursday. During an interview with the newspaper “Mlada fronta Dnes”, Zeman compared those allegations to the United States’ past claims about Iraq and Afghanistan. “My view [of the situation around Ukraine is that] there will be no war because Russians aren’t insane to launch an operation that will cause them more damage than benefits,” Zeman pointed out. “As for US intelligence agencies, this is their third fiasco. The first was the war in Iraq, where no weapons of mass destruction were found. Afghanistan was the second one, as [they] claimed that the Taliban would never take Kabul. And now this is the third one,” the Czech president noted. Zeman said that five days before February 16, he had received a secret message about alleged preparations for a Russian invasion of Ukraine. “It came from the CIA. I don’t ask the CIA what sources of information it has. But given the three [fiascos], I doubt the quality of these sources,”...

In the stands under the shady trees in the park, visitors can purchase products from Czech farms. The market takes place four times a week. You can enjoy some traditional Czech food without the madness of the more central Prague markets. And with lots of benches around the market, you can just enjoy the moment in the shade of the TV Tower and the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord that dominates the square. On the night of Thursday, 17 February, the Czech Republic was hit by a strong storm. On the highest mountain of the country, Snezka, the wind speed reached 181 km/h. In low-lying areas, including Prague, it reached 90 km/h, which corresponds to a strong storm on the Beaufort scale. As of 10 am, the bad weather left more than 300 thousand households without electricity. The wind broke down branches of trees that cut off power lines, blocking railways and roads. Transport along several railway lines was disrupted and many roads were closed to traffic. The worst damage is reported in the Central Bohemia, Pilsen and Karlovy Vary regions. No injuries or casualties have yet been reported. There are 270,000 ČEZ customers and 40,000 E.ON customers without electricity. The remaining suppliers have not provided their data. “We are still in the thick of a major storm that has created storm conditions, and despite those difficult conditions in the field, our crews continue restoring power and making system repairs when it is safe to do so,” said the vice president for ČEZ. A gale force wind alert remains in place until midnight for the whole of the country.
Hammering home the city of Ostrava’s transformation from an industrial coal and metal mining center in the 20th century to the modern metropolis it is today, CHYBIK + KRISTOF has revealed plans for the Czech Republic’s tallest building: Ostrava Tower. Subtly shaped like an X, the 56-story, the 235-meters-tall tower is the latest piece of urban infill for Ostrava, as industrial lots have given way to new residential and cultural buildings such as Steven Holl’s 2019 concert hall. Flaring at the base and pinnacle and cinched at the waist with a 90-degree turn between the top and bottom, each of the three points contains public spaces; a barrier-free ground floor to allow for a seamless transition for pedestrians from the plaza at base level and the local bus terminal, and a public bar, cafe, and restaurant with panoramic views of the city at the very top. In between those two terminuses will sit residential units, offices, a hotel, retail, and a “congress centre”. “Rethinking the typology of the skyscraper,” said architect Michal Kristof, co-founder of CHK, in the project’s announcement, “and its function to serve the public and activate the urban environment, one of our core missions was to create a positive social impact in the heart of...
