Traditionally, Vltava Day is held on the first spring days as a symbolic opening of the boat season on the Vltava River. You will be able to ride free of charge on river ferries, classic motorboats, a real Venetian gondola and a historical sailing boat. The new Czech government led by conservative Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS, ECR) wants to delay the decision on the Istanbul Convention’s ratification despite increasing pressure from Brussels. As Deník N learnt, the ratification could damage relations in the five-party governing coalition. In November 2021, the European Parliament called on Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Bulgaria to immediately ratify the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women, as they are the only EU countries that have not done it so far. In its official program statement, the new Czech government promised another approach to victims of sexual violence. “We will ensure better protection for victims of sexual and domestic violence,” the document reads. However, Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blažek (ODS, ECR) has asked for discussions about the Convention to be postponed for a year. Blažek explained this move with a need for further political debates on this issue. “In view of the new political composition of the Chamber of Deputies, he (Minister) has requested that the deadline for discussion be postponed until the end of January 2023. The Czech Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Czech Interior Ministry, other ministries and Jewish organizations are preparing a national strategy to combat antisemitism. It will focus on education, on the fight against hate speech on the Internet, and on legislation. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský (Pirates) made the announcement in a video post commemorating the Day of Holocaust Remembrance. “Remembering the tragedy of the Holocaust and bearing witness to it teach us to better recognize dangerous tendencies that turn toward terrible ends,” the chief diplomat said. According to Lipavský, research on antisemitism and extremism in the Czech Republic shows the country has a relatively low number of recorded incidents with an antisemitic subtext. “We can be proud of that, but even here the amount of speech and other forms of racial intolerance on the Internet is rising. If you’ve travelled through some of the more historical office and government buildings in Prague, you might have come across a dangerous-looking elevator that doesn’t have a door, nor does it stop at each floor as it passes by. That would be the paternoster, which moves in a continual loop as passengers brave enough to step onto the doorless cubicle can board once the platform is within stepping range, and disembark when it brings them to their floor. Here’s one of Prague’s paternoster elevators at work, located at the Lucerna passage off of Wenceslas Square: It certainly looks dangerous, in any event, when one imagines the kind of carnage that might befall a stray limb should it get caught between the lift and a floor. But most paternosters are equipped with security features that should prevent that from happening. Prague will showcase the Slavic Epic by Alfons Mucha in the Savarin Palace for the next 25 years. There has been a dispute with one of the heirs to the collection, John Mucha, and it has been settled that there will be a space in the area for the family’s collection to exhibit. The developer, Welwyn, will be in charge of this operation and administration. This was decided from an agreement with the Mucha Foundation, Prague as the city and Welwyn – and was approved by Prague councilors. The collection includes twenty large canvases which were first painted in 1910. Last year they were loaned to Moravský Krumlov for the next five years, where it is currently exhibited. The next 25 years they will belong to Prague on a lease term which will be under the same conditions unless the exhibitor and the developer agree otherwise. This agreement is the conclusion on a long-standing dispute between john Mucha and the capital over the ownership of the canvases. The Prague Transport Company (DPP) has obtained a valid joint permit for the electrification of bus line, 119 from Veleslavín to Václav Havel Airport. They will now look for a construction company in a tender process. The construction of contact wires should begin at the end of this year. The costs are tentatively estimated at 300 million crowns. DPP spokeswoman Aneta Řehková announced on Monday. The company is now preparing to electrify other bus lines as well. “Now it is necessary to complete the property settlement of the construction and announce a public contract for its contractor. I firmly believe that we will be able to start construction at the end of this year or early next year. The construction of the entire infrastructure should take about ten to 12 months,” said DPP Technical Director Jan Šurovský.
