The Czech central state budget showed a 419.7 billion crown deficit at the end of 2021, Finance Ministry data showed on Thursday. It is the largest deficit in the modern history of the Czech Republic, surpassing the CZK 367.4 billion deficit registered in 2020. However, it is still below the CZK 500 billion ceiling approved by Parliament. Adjusted for funds from the EU, the end-December budget would show a deficit of 408.4 billion crowns, versus 364.9 billion crowns deficit in the previous year. Overall expenditure rose 3.5% while income was up 0.8% in 2021. Since the start of the year, the Czech Republic has been on a provisional budget, which is expected to last until the end of March. This is because the Chamber of Deputies failed to approve the draft state budget for 2022 by the end of last year. The central budget is the main part of the EU country’s overall public sector finances, which also include local and regional administrations, the health insurance system and various off-budget funds. The ministry has forecast the 2021 public sector deficit at 7.2% of gross domestic product. For 2022, the public gap is estimated at 4.4% of GDP.
Almost seven thousand apartments with a total of 18,732 beds were offered last July by landlords in Prague. That is half of the apartments compared to July 2019. It emerged from the analysis, published by the Institute of Planning and Development Authority (IPR). The government and the Senate have approved a new law on the compensation bonus which introduces two new bonus periods from November 22, 2021, to January 31, 2022. Self-employed persons and entrepreneurs with a drop in sales of at least 30% in this period will be able to apply for up to CZK 1,000 per day. The law will now be signed by the president. “The continuation of the compensation bonus for entrepreneurs is a natural response to the negative development of the covid pandemic and related government measures, especially in the area of services, which mainly concern unvaccinated citizens. After consultations with business associations and chambers, the new law keeps the model of increased assistance of up to CZK 1,000 per day for self-employed persons and entrepreneurs, who can thus reach a total of CZK 71,000 in two set bonus periods. Mexico City, 1968. A newly-crowned Olympic champion is about to make the life-changing decision to stage a political protest on the podium. The protest came from Czech gymnast Věra Čáslavská as a reaction to the Soviet-led invasion of her country two months earlier. Caslavska turned her head away from the flag of what she called the “invaders’ representatives”, the Soviet Union. The action was understated. The ramifications were huge, as World Service programme Sporting Witness has discovered through the first-hand account of British gymnast Mary Prestidge. Prestidge spent time training alongside Čáslavská in the build-up to the Mexico Games as part of an exchange programme. The Czech gymnast was already a superstar, having won three gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, including the individual all-around title. Her chances of repeating such dominance were dealt a huge blow in the run-up to the Olympics, however, when she was forced into hiding by the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Andaz, a brand of Hyatt Hotels, has completed the reconstruction of the Cukrovarnický palác, located on Senovážné náměstí. Housed in the former office building, the Sugar Palace, the hotel features 176 rooms, three food and beverage outlets, event space, a fitness centre, and a spa. The neo-baroque palace was built in 1916 for administrative purposes, and today it is a protected cultural monument. Therefore, all the steps of the reconstruction were agreed upon with the local authorities. The interiors have preserved the original doors, window frames, and stucco moldings. It is ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive the protection they need. Local and national governments worldwide are urging citizens to get the COVID vaccine as soon as possible in order to protect themselves and the people around them. While booking an appointment and visiting a General Practitioner sounds simple, it can be a challenging – and sometimes, impossible – a task for someone with impaired physical mobility. As The Mayor.eu reports, the Czech Red Cross (CRC) has teamed up with the Association of General Practitioners, the University Hospital in Motol, and the Municipal Polyclinic in Prague to help vaccinate immobile citizens from the comfort of their homes. Vaccinating unregistered patients On 4 January, the Czech capital revealed that 22 GPs are currently involved in this project, visiting vulnerable individuals with the help of CRC drivers.
