Four women suspected of being involved in manufacturing and selling falsified COVID-19 vaccine certificates have been detained in Vsetín. According to iDNES, these false documents are believed to have been sold for a price between 2 and 7,000 crowns. The women are suspected of providing fake Covid certificates to over 70 people, for which they took in almost CZK 500,000 “An anonymous letter addressed to the management of the Vsetín (Zlín Region) hospital drew our attention,” said Chief Inspector Petr Jaroš. Two women are suspected of accepting bribes, forging and altering the documents. Two other two worked in the Vsetín vaccination center and registered those interested in the systems without physically undergoing the vaccination,” Jaroš added. Throughout the month of January, Prague’s public transport will run according to holiday timetables, which will mean an extension of intervals, especially at peak times. The main reason is the decrease in passengers due to more people working from home during the Covid epidemic. “From today (Monday, January 3) until the end of the month, Prague’s public transport is slightly reduced by about nine percent,” said Filip Drápal, spokesperson for ROPID. A total of 468 people died in traffic accidents in the Czech Republic in 2021, nine more than in 2020. Between 2000 and 2019, the number of annual road fatalities fell by 59%. The greatest reductions were achieved between 2000 and 2013 when the number of annual road deaths dropped 56%. Since 2013, when annual road deaths numbered 654, the number of road deaths has oscillated, reaching a high of 737 in 2015 and a record low of 577 in 2017 before returning to the 658 fatalities in 2018. The number of traffic deaths per 100 000 inhabitants in the Czech Republic has fallen 60% between 2000 and 2019. In 2019, 5.8 traffic deaths per 100 000 inhabitants were recorded, compared to 14.5 in 2000. By way of comparison, the average in the European Union (EU) was 5.1 deaths per 100 000 inhabitants in 2019. Pedestrians registered the largest reduction among all road user groups from 2000 to 2019, with 70% fewer road deaths in the latter year. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the declaration of a Soviet amnesty on 3 January 1942 pertaining to Czechoslovak citizens imprisoned and interned in the USSR, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR) will publish a collection of NKVD investigative files in cooperation with the Department of Cybernetics at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. These files were kept on 1,000 Czechoslovaks out of a total of approximately 8,000 who were imprisoned in Gulag camps during WWII. This represents the first collection of Soviet secret service files obtained within the framework of systematic digitalisation at the State Archive of the Zakarpatska Oblast (DAZO) in Uzzhorod. “The investigation files include arrest reports, fingerprints, photographs, interrogation reports, charges, a gulag’s discharge, and a rehabilitation decision. The files include personal photographs and documents of those arrested by the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs, which in Russian is abbreviated to NKVD, ” said historian Adam Hradilek, project leader of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes. The Czech crown hit its highest level since 2012, gaining in new year trading from higher interest rates and data showing stronger manufacturing sentiment. On April 14, the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic voted in favour of a bigger protection of cyclists on the roads. 67 out of the 102 present deputies (the number was lowered due to the Covid-19 pandemic) approved the proposal laid before the Chamber by Petr Dolínek of the Czech Social Democratic Party. Only two deputies voted against the motion. Road users will have to give 1.5 meters of space to cyclists while overtaking, 1 meter in areas with a maximum speed of 30 kph. A somewhat heated debate preceded the acceptance of the proposal. Some of the deputies based their arguments on their own experience of sharing the road. “It is an easy, predictable method, tried and tested in other countries,” said Ondřej Profant, a deputy for the Czech Pirate Party.
