Prague to Hold Largest European Education Festival

On 17 January, the Czech capital revealed that it will host the 12th edition of the largest European education festival: Science on Stage.  The 2022 event will take place on 24-27 March at the Clarion Congress Hotel Prague in Vysočany and will mark the first time that Science on Stage comes to the Czech Republic. As a partner of the festival, the City of Prague has decided to allocate CZK 2 million for its organisation and operation. Noting that the Science on Stage 2022 fair carries tremendous importance, Councillor for education Vít Šimral shared: “The festival, of which Prague is a proud partner, is a significant contribution to the inspiration and networking of teachers across Europe. This is an extraordinary opportunity for Prague and non-Prague teachers to gain stimuli and motivation in simple experiments and projects that will help them enrich and change their own teaching.” According to the Czech municipality, around 450 primary and secondary school teachers from over 30 countries will attend the 2022 fair. There, they will establish connections with research institutes, companies, and experts whilst showcasing their innovative ideas. Czechia Considers Mandatory Vaccination for Health Workers and People Over 60

The Czech government will on Wednesday consider making COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for workers in key professions and people over the age of 60 after the daily tally of new coronavirus cases hit a record high. Authorities said 28,469 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Tuesday, more than double the 12,371 reported for Tuesday of last week. Screening increased this week with the introduction of twice-weekly tests at all workplaces. The previous one-day record was just under 28,000 on 25 November last year. Experts say up to 50,000 cases a day could be recorded in the coming weeks due to a surge in the Omicron variant of the virus. Omicron is now the dominant coronavirus variant in the central European country of 10.7 million people. Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s centre-right government will consider what further steps to take after shortening quarantine and isolation times as part of new measures while also launching mandatory testing of employees at companies from this week. Asymptomatic essential healthcare workers and social service personnel who test positive for COVID-19 are allowed to continue working. Hospitalizations, which peaked at more than 7,000 in early December, dropped to 1,635 on Tuesday from 1,761 reported for Monday.

Czech Republic Reports 28,469 New Cases of Coronavirus, Record Daily Tally

The Czech Republic reported 28,469 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, the highest daily tally since the pandemic reached the country in March 2020. The number reported for Tuesday is more than double the 12,371 cases reported for the same day last week. Screening increased this week with the introduction of twice-weekly tests at all workplaces. 128,000 tests were performed on Tuesday, 29,000 more than a week ago. Experts say up to 50,000 cases a day could be recorded in the coming weeks due to a surge in the Omicron variant of the virus. The previous one-day record was just under 28,000 on 25 November last year. The worst situation is still registered in Prague. On Tuesday, the daily number of confirmed cases in the capital was again record-breaking, with tests revealing 5,741 positives. On the other hand, the Vysočina and Moravian-Silesian regions are relatively the best, with 529 newly infected and 552 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days. On Tuesday, 1,635 patients with covid-19 required hospital care, 252 of whom were in severe condition. Both numbers are decreasing for the past few weeks. The Prague Market to Develop as Place of Leisure Opportunities

Prague city will offer an old-new place for relaxation, entertainment, culture, meetings and events with various concepts as well as hybrid events. Since July 2022, the premises of the Prague Market in Holešovice will be under administration of the Prague Exhibition Grounds, and the whole space will become a buzzing social life venue. It will finally be able to blossom, after lengthy legal disputes with the former tenant. Connection of the two urban areas will bring more dynamic development of the market grounds, faster course of the necessary reconstructions, better maintenance and, of course, efficiency in the management and administration of the premises. Tomáš Hübl, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Prague Exhibition Grounds, says: “I think that it was not only locals, who perceived the really lengthy legal disputes over the Holešovice Market Grounds, and the gradual partial decline of this historically important complex. The market is a space with a potential to become an attractive destination offering entertainment, good food or shopping opportunities that are not usually available in shopping centres. Czech Singer Hana Horká Died After Intentionally Trying to Catch Covid

She was 57 years old, singer of a Czech folk group specializing in Irish and Scottish music. She decided to catch Covid intentionally, in order to avoid the vaccine, and now is unfortunately dead.  This is the story of Hana Horkà. In recent days she wrote on her social media that she was infected with the Delta variant. “I’m very happy about it because in this way I would be able to start having a “free” life like everyone else, and go back to the cinema, on vacation, to take a sauna, to the theater”. Her son, Jan Rek said: ‘She decided to continue to live normally with us and preferred to catch the disease than to get vaccinated.’ Two days before her death, Horka took to social media to say: ‘I survived… It was intense. So now there will be the theatre, sauna, a concert… and an urgent trip to the sea,’ she added. Horka went for a walk outside but when she returned she started to complain about back pain and soon after, died choking in her bed. An obituary of the singer appeared on the Asonance website and the causes of her death have not been specified....

Náplavka to Become a Busy Road in February

It will be “life-threatening” to walk along Náplavka or go there with friends for fun. During February, it will become a busy road. Due to the reconstruction of the road between Výton and Palacký Bridge, Prague Deputy Mayor for Transport and Heritage Conservation Adam Scheinherr (34, Praha Sobě) will have the vehicles driven there in February.  “The cars will drive at a reduced speed and only for 200 meters, at the level of Dřevná – Na Hrobci streets,” he said. According to him, the cars will be safely separated from pedestrians and more than two-thirds of the space will remain freely passable. Scheinherr also defends himself by saying that a similar step has taken place in the past.  “The same regime was in 2012 under the mayor Svoboda, when the dormitories on the Rašín embankment were repaired. They did it in the winter then when there aren’t that many people by the water. In addition, it is only one of three stages for about three weeks,” he said. Czech Republic Registers EU’s Strongest House Price Growth in Q3 2021

In Q3 2021, the Czech Republic registered the strongest house price growth within the EU, both in a year-on-year (22%) and a quarter-on-quarter (7.3%) comparison, well above the EU average of 9.2% and 3.1%, respectively, according to Eurostat’s House price index. Among CEE countries, Hungary was the only other one that registered an annual growth rate higher than the EU average, whereas Slovakia was the only other one to record above-average quarterly growth. Long term increase continues Rents and house prices in the EU have continued their steady increase in Q3 2021, going up by 1.2% and 9.2% respectively, compared with Q3 2020. Between 2010 and Q2 2011, house prices and rents in the EU followed similar paths, but since Q2 2011, those paths have diverged significantly. While rents increased steadily throughout the period up to Q3 2021, house prices have fluctuated considerably. After a sharp decline between Q2 2011 and Q1 2013, house prices remained more or less stable between 2013 and 2014. Czech Central Bank Sees Inflation at 9.6% in February

Czech inflation will jump to 9.2% in January and 9.6% in February as the expiration of a tax break and repricing by suppliers raises energy prices, adding to domestic price pressures, central bank analysts said on Monday. The Czech central bank has been the most aggressive in central Europe in responding to price spikes driven by international energy prices and logistics bottlenecks, but also domestic demand and economic recovery amid a very tight labour market. The bank raised its benchmark repo rate to 3.75% from 0.25% in mid-2021, and is expected to tighten further when the board meets on Feb. 3, in an attempt to convince the public that inflation will get back toward its 2% target by early next year. A large factor in the January inflation jump is the expiration of a two-month value-added tax break on energy which expired in December, Dana Hajkova and Radek Snobl wrote in a blog post on the bank’s website. “Together with the growth in heating prices and other items, regulated prices will jump in January, according to current estimates, from December’s -2.9% to 13%, which in itself will accelerate year-on-year inflation versus December by 2.2 percentage points,” they wrote. “In the...
