The number of Czech citizens dying of COVID-19 has been steadily declining despite a recent record surge in coronavirus infections caused by the highly transmittable omicron variant. The figures released by the Health Ministry on Wednesday show that 121 people died in the last seven days, down from 206 the previous period and 289 another seven days back. New infections in the Czech Republic had been declining since a record high in late November but started growing again in January driven by the omicron variant that has become dominant. The daily increases hit a record high of almost 40,000 cases on Tuesday, about 11,000 more than a week ago and the third time a record was set in the last eight days. The 7-day infection rate jumped to 1,689 new cases per 100,000 residents on Tuesday compared to 1,585 a day earlier. Former Czech President Václav Klaus has sharply criticized the planned amendment to the pandemic law which the government is trying to enforce in the Chamber of Deputies, it has emerged. According to Klaus, the proposal is an “extraordinary attack by state power on freedom, democratic order, and constitutionally protected rights.” “A draft bill is being discussed in a shortened process, meaning in a regime of emergency legislation, which circumvents a proper public social and legal debate. It intends to enable the state to severely limit the constitutionally protected civil liberties by a decree of three ministers, under the threat of draconian sanctions,” the former president warned on Tuesday. The former president claimed the amendment allows ministries to establish a de facto state of war and cancel any cultural or social events without the approval of the government and parliament. Zličín will have a new metro station. Its appearance will be decided through an architectural competition. Prague, in cooperation with Czechdesign, are organising this competition. The results will be evaluated by a jury and should be decided by April this year. Although, the construction of the winning project is not scheduled to start until 2026. Depo Zličín will be a surface metro station. The task of the winning architect will be to create a balance between functionality and aesthetic expression. They should cooperate with artists and designers typical for the Prague metro. However, for the competition, it will not only be the design of the depot building that will be judged. It will also include the surrounding area where a P+R parking lot with 500 parking spaces is due to be built before construction begins. The Depo Zličín station will then enable passengers to transfer to public transport. On January 16, 1969, Jan Palach set himself on fire in Prague in protest against the August 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops. The 20-year-old university student died of his burns three days later. Palach’s funeral turned into a mass demonstration of opposition against the Soviet Union’s crushing of the liberal reforms of the Prague Spring. His act of protest inspired two other Czechs — Jan Zajic and Evzen Plocek — to commit suicide by self-immolation in the following months, followed by similar acts by protesters in other communist countries.
