Czech President Milos Zeman will appoint centre-right opposition leader Petr Fiala as the new prime minister on Nov. 26 following last month’s election, Fiala said after meeting the president on Wednesday. The Together group led by Fiala and a coalition of the progressive Pirate Party and the centrist Mayors won a parliamentary majority in the Oct 8-9 vote and pledged to replace the outgoing government of Prime Minister Andrej Babis. The new administration will take power amid a renewed surge in Czech coronavirus infections, which on Tuesday hit an all-time daily high of over 22,000. Babis said on Wednesday the government would bar non-vaccinated people from access to public events and services from next week. Fiala, 57, a political science professor and leader of the centre-right Civic Democrats since 2014, said his team would reveal its own proposals to fight the pandemic. As of Monday, November 22, the so-called “Bavarian” model will be introduced in the Czech Republic, which abolishes the recognition of tests as a cover certificate. Negative test results will no longer be accepted as a valid certificate for people visiting pubs, bars, restaurants and mass events. “We will introduce the so-called Bavarian model. It will be launched from Sunday the 21st to Monday the 22nd of November. From now on, only vaccinated and people who recovered from covid will be allowed to mass events and public spaces. Antigen and PCR tests are completely canceled,” Babiš told Czech Television on Wednesday. How the Bavarian works? Under the state’s new regulations, the so-called 2G rule applies in almost all public spaces from Tuesday. That means only people who are vaccinated or have recovered from Covid in the last six months can access many public facilities, including cultural, sports and leisure facilities. Praguers who own the Lítačka card issued in 2018 will not have to change it after it expires in 2022. Their cards will be automatically extended for another three years, according to Petr Habáň, a spokesman for the city company in charge of the card — ICT Operator (OICT). He confirmed this in conversation with ČTK. With now over 933,000 of these cards in the system, about 168,000 cards expire next year. The city first issued the card in March 2016, since replacing the problematic Opencard card. “By deciding to extend the validity of the Lítačka cards by three years, we want to meet the needs of all passengers in the capital, thus relieving them of their worries about handling a new card. In addition, this will prevent unnecessary costs that would result in issuing new cards,” said Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates). All expiring cards will be automatically renewed in the OICT database. The Czech Republic reported 22,479 new coronavirus cases for Tuesday, the highest tally recorded in the country since the pandemic started, Health Ministry data showed on Wednesday. The daily figure represented a 54% jump from a week ago and surpassed a previous record of 17,778 infections seen in January. The country tends to report the highest number of cases on Tuesdays as more people test after the weekend. The soaring figures come as infections are on the rise in a number of European countries including neighbours Austria, Germany and Slovakia. The Czechs have had to observe relatively light restrictions in the latest COVID-19 wave compared to previous ones, with the government pledging no school closures or lockdowns, and promoting vaccination. People have to show negative COVID-19 tests or vaccination certificates to enter restaurants and bars and are required to wear masks inside. November 17 is a national holiday which will be commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the Velvet Revolution- known as the struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day and International Student Day. The Czech state holiday, also known as International Students Day, marks not only the Velvet Uprising in 1989 but also student protests in 1939. Large celebrations and events are traditionally held throughout the country, primarily in the capital Prague, which was the site of historical events in 1939 and 1989. This year, the events will also commemorate 10 years since the death of dissident and former president Václav Havel. The events will start at 9:00 with a commemorative event at Hlávek’s dormitory- followed by a reverential act in Žitná Street. The Czech Republic is the next country to announce open support for Poland in the struggle against the migration crisis at the border with Belarus. Czech Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhanek discussed the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border with Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau on Sunday. Kulhanek noted that the Visegrád Four foreign ministers would meet on Monday to further discuss the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. Kulhanek intends to repeat his offer of aid during the meeting and was in favor of additional sanctions against Belarus. The Czech foreign minister was also supported by the deputy leader of the Mayors and Independents (STAN) party Vieslav Michalik who declared that the Czech Republic “would show our neighbors that we are not cowards.” Jakub Kulhanek, along with Andrej Babiš’s entire cabinet, has recently resigned.
