The Prague authorities will increase the tourist fee for accommodation from the current 21 to 50 CZK per day. The main reason is the effort to increase the city’s income, which is lower than the expenses associated with tourism. The city therefore approved a memorandum with Prague City Tourism (PCT) and the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic. The tourism fee for Prague has long been lower than in other European cities: the current CZK 21 is equivalent to around €0.81, compared to €1.1 in Barcelona, €2.11 in Vienna, and €3.2 in Budapest. The image of Prague as a suitable destination for congresses, conferences, exhibitions, and fairs will also be significantly supported. “The fee is the only tool by which Czech municipalities can directly compensate for the costs associated with tourism and through which they can contribute to its economic benefits. Coronavirus infections in the Czech Republic have soared to the highest levels in more than half a year as authorities call on people to get vaccinated. The Health Ministry said the daily tally of new cases jumped to 4,262 on Monday, 1,733 more than a week ago. It was the highest daily increase since April 13. The trend was not expected to be reversed any time soon. The ministry predicted that in the next few days the country will have more than 300 people infected per 100,000 in a seven-day period, a significant increase from 217 on Monday. October 28 is Independent Czechoslovak State Day, and most large stores over 200 square meters will close due to the law passed in 2016. Pharmacies, gas stations, and stores in airports, hospitals and train stations are not included in the law. Stores under 200 square meters, such as local grocery stores, can also remain open. Legally, all retail spaces over 200m2, except wholesale, will have to be closed on this day, as during most other national holidays. The Prague City Hall is to cancel the register of dog breeders due to an amendment to the Animal Protection Act which will take effect from January 1, 2022. When the amendments come into force, all breeders will be obliged to report dogs and the required data to the Central Veterinary Administration so a unified central register of dogs and their breeders can be established. From the start of next year, the municipality has also decided to cancel the relief from the fee that people received when registering an animal which will, in turn, increase the city’s income each year. People will still need to continue to pay the fee for a dog of 1,500 crowns per year, or 600 crowns in the case of breeding in family houses. Previously, they offered a discount to breeders if they had their dog marked with an identification number and registered it in the city register. Taiwanese government ministers were visiting Prague on Monday accompanied by dozens of business and research representatives to boost trade and investment, a move that has angered China. Minister of National Development Kung Ming-hsin is leading a delegation of 66 officials representing business and research groups and organizations, including biotechnology, green energy, information technology, machinery and tourism. Zaha Hadid Architects has shared updates and new visuals for the Masaryčka Building in Prague. The studio said that construction continues with the structure of the retail levels on the ground and first floors now completed. The studio revealed first plans in 2016 to design a new urban development adjacent to the city’s Masaryk Railway Station. A set of new visuals show that the studio has refined the plans and gave a more detailed look to the complex with façade elements and overall composition. Zaha Hadid Architects also added that works have begun to construct the higher floors of cantilevered offices with terraced roof gardens. The building is planned to open in 2023. Masaryčka’s design will provide a new pedestrian route between Na Florenci Street in the north and Hybernská Boulevard to the south, in addition to enhancing accessibility to the railway platforms below.
