Besides other parks in the wider center of Prague, Obora Hvězda has a very foresty character. But the central part hides a beautiful renaissance summer palace, and you might suddenly feel very aristocratic walking around. The first mention of the forest, originally called Malejov, dates from 993 when Duke Boleslaus II donated it to the newly established Břevnov Monastery. It was transformed into a walled game reserve during the rule of Ferdinand I in the mid-16th century. The current name (hvězda being Czech for “star”) derives from the Star Summer Palace, which stands in middle of the forest. The summer palace was build in the 16th century. Rumour has it that it was built out of love and given to the beloved lady of Ferdinand II., a gentleman from the Habsburg monarchy who was responsible for Czech lands at the time. České Budějovice police caught a man trying to trick officers who were “walking” a stuffed toy dog. The curious situation was witnessed by a few journalists of Czech Television, filming a report in the South Bohemian city. In his desperation to escape the restrictions, the man hit on the ‘bright idea’ of using the dog walking clause. This allows people to take their pets out for short walks. Unfortunately, lacking a real canine friend, he decided to ‘walk’ a stuffed pooch, perhaps hoping police would not notice the difference. “We ask for good judgment during the following weeks. We are facing a serious situation and people can be fined for that. It is a matter of public health,” said Věra Školková, a spokeswoman for the České Budějovice city police. “However, the man listened to the patrol warning and then went home. He regretted his actions,” Školková added. “We are facing [too] serious a situation to have you walking on the street trying to fool the police. You don’t fool us and also you’ll be fined. According to the latest International Monetary Fund (IMF) survey, the Czech Republic is ahead of Spain and Italy in terms of GDP per capita. Although this result is affected by the coronavirus crisis, which has taken a severe toll on big economies, this metric is expected to remain in place even after the crisis ends. The IMF also believes that within five years, the Czech Republic will surpass New Zealand and Japan and reach 25th place in GDP per capita. According to the IMF, gross domestic product per capita in the Czech Republic this year is 38,120 international dollars at constant prices and converted into purchasing power parity. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has announced a tender for the supply of 20 arge-capacity trolleybuses that will run between Nadraži Veleslavin metro station and Vaclav Havel Airport. “They will be 25 meters in length, which will greatly improve passenger comfort, make transportation easier by avoiding the adding of more bus connections while reducing exhaust emissions to zero,” adds Scheinherr. The trolleybus route should be operational in 2023. According to Deputy Mayor for Transport Adam Scheinherr, the construction of the line will begin in Autumn 2022. The city expects to order 20 double-articulated 25 m trolleybuses with off-wire capability at a cost of 600 million CZK. A further 300 million CZK is to be spent on infrastructure works. In the longer term, part of the trolleybus route could be converted into a tram line. The planned western extension of tram routes 20 and 26 is not expected to be completed before 2028. From Saturday, Austria will require a negative COVID-19 test upon arrivals from the Czech Republic, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs Petříček. Medical professionals, seasonal workers, and diplomats will be exempted from the above-mentioned decision. On Thursday morning, 4,453 new infections were recorded across Austria – the first time since the start of the pandemic when more than 4,000 cases have been recorded in a 24-hour period. A total of 29 deaths were recorded across the country from Wednesday to Thursday. When comparing Austria’s federal states, confirmed cases were in Lower Austria (1,074), followed by Vienna (821), Upper Austria (796), Tyrol (584), Styria (355), Salzburg (262), Vorarlberg (261), and Carinthia (166) and Burgenland (119). Similarly to the spring months, when Prague foresters carried out planned tree planting during the state of emergency declared by the Czech government, they are launching the autumn planting in various areas of the city under the same conditions. Spring and autumn are the seasons guaranteeing optimal climatic conditions for planting, foresters in Prague can thus plan to plant 130 thousand new trees before winter 2020 begins. Thanks to their intense seasonal activities the foresters planted over 107 thousand tree plants this spring. Plan of the Forests of the Capital City of Prague, a municipal company, includes planting new beeches, oaks, firs, pines, and larches to replace ceased forests, or to give life to their new projects. Planting new trees is essential for maintaining the quality of existing wooded areas, for reinforcing the land surrounding bodies of water, or for preventing the residential areas from noise generated by traffic. Prague City plans to invest several millions of crowns in greening the city over a period of eight years. The target number was set to a million of new trees.
