In a follow-up report on the Czech Republic, the Council of Europe’s anti-money laundering body MONEYVAL concludes that the country has improved measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, but still needs to make progress in certain areas. Since the adoption of its mutual evaluation report in December 2018, the Czech Republic is reporting to MONEYVAL on an expedited timetable due to the high number of deficiencies identified in several key areas. The follow-up carried out by MONEYVAL has examined a range of legislative, regulatory, and institutional measures implemented by the Czech Republic to address these deficiencies. MONEYVAL notes progress and assigns the Czech Republic higher international compliance ratings in three key areas: the improvement of mechanisms for national cooperation and coordination to tackle money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF); the strengthening of countermeasures against countries and jurisdictions which represent a high ML/TF risk; and the removing of regulatory gaps for correspondent banking relationships, which will ensure greater transparency for bank-to-bank transactions. Hungary will close its borders to foreign citizens as of 1 September, Gergely Gulyás, Minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office, said at the Kormányinfó press conference Friday afternoon. Hungary will close its borders to foreigners from 1 September to curb a rise in coronavirus infections and Hungarians returning from abroad will have to go into quarantine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s cabinet chief said today. The move comes as several European countries implement stricter COVID-19 measures. “From September 1, foreign citizens will no longer be allowed to enter the territory of Hungary,” Gergely Gulyás, the prime minister Viktor Orbán’s cabinet chief said during a press briefing. Exceptions for the ban on entry for foreigners would apply to military convoys and for humanitarian transit, as well as business or diplomatic travel. He said Hungarian citizens returning from abroad must quarantine for 14 days or must present two negative tests, which they must pay for themselves. The new restrictions are coming into force in a bid to stem the spread of coronavirus. The Czech government has approved the creation of a fund to help Belarusians affected by the restrictions of President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime. The Czech Republic will set aside CZK 10 million korunas for this purpose from this year’s budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Switzerland, Greece, Iceland and the Czech Republic could be the next four countries on the UK Government’s quarantine list. Holidaymakers traveling to the four European countries could be forced to self-isolate for 14 days upon landing back in Britain. Greece could follow Spain, France, and Croatia in being the fourth popular European destination banned from quarantine-free travel. And Switzerland could follow it, with a spike in Covid-19 cases concerning Government officials. The study was released today (August 26) in honor of International Dog Day. Berlin-based insurance company Coya has curated a list of the best cities around the world for our furry companions. The 2020 Best Cities for Dogs Index compares and analyzes the conditions for our four-legged friends in 50 major dog-friendly cities around the world. Researchers have looked at several different metrics related to dog ownership, including the number of veterinarians, dog-friendly restaurants, and lifetime costs of owning a pup. The survey also takes into account other factors such as the number of abandoned dogs per year, and the minimum fine a dog owner would need to pay for not removing dog waste. “To complement our findings, we also asked residents in each city to rate responsible dog ownership in their area with regard to how responsible dog owners are in cleaning up their pet’s poop,” according to Coya. More than one year ago, during the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Czech Republic Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Amidst discussion of progress in the Czech economy and advancements in artificial intelligence, the Prime Minister suggested Apple establish an official retail location in Prague. This week, Apple posted a job position ad on its official website, which confirms the opening of the store. The iconic California-based company is looking for an “Apple Shop Leader” in the Czech Republic. Babiš noted that Cook was “absolutely enthusiastic” that the country has more than 500 scientists working on artificial intelligence before stating that he offered Apple to build a store in Prague. Babiš added the ideal place for the Apple Store would be the Ministry of Regional Development building in the Old Town Square, but should Apple move forward with plans, it’s not clear where the store would be located. Daniel Křetínský, the billionaire known as the Czech Sphinx, has quietly become the largest shareholder in Royal Mail, heaping more pressure on the troubled postal service as it faces calls for a break-up. Křetínský, who owns Sparta Prague football club and who made his fortune in energy, has amassed a CZK 7,4 billion stake in the historic FTSE250 company. The company is seen as particularly vulnerable to a break-up because it has been without a permanent chief executive since May when it ousted former boss Rico Back, who had overseen a decline in letter volumes and a breakdown in relations with unions.
