Vršovice will have its first-ever public ice rink this winter, as Prague 10 City Hall prepares to open a 30-by-15-meter rink on Svatopluk Čecha Square. The official opening is planned for the first Advent weekend, with skating continuing through the end of February. Admission will be free for all children aged 10 to 15 who live in Prague 10. In the mornings, the rink will be reserved for school groups that sign up in advance. The project also includes a skate rental and refreshment stand, making it accessible for families and schools alike. The Prague City Council has voted to terminate the lease agreement with the Guild of Fiakrists and Carriers of Bohemia and Moravia, officially ending horse-drawn carriage rides on Old Town Square. Shared e-scooters will disappear from Prague’s streets starting in January 2026 after city councilors approved a new transport regulation system on Monday. The decision follows years of complaints from residents and central districts that the scooters block sidewalks and pose a risk to pedestrians—especially in tourist-heavy areas. Under the new rules, only shared bicycles and e-bikes will remain in operation, but with strict limits. Operators will have to sign contracts with the city’s Technical Administration of Communications (TSK) and ensure that their vehicles are parked only in clearly marked spots. The popular light exhibition, returning for its fourth year, opens to the public on October 31 and will remain on display until the end of January. The average age in the Czech Republic is rising at a rapid pace. In 2023, it reached 42.8 years, a significant jump of four years since the turn of the century. Among regions, Central Bohemia holds the youngest population, with an average age of 41.5 years, followed closely by Prague at 41.7 years. Unlike other parts of the country, these areas have seen little change in average age over recent years. On the other end of the spectrum, Zlín Region has the oldest population, averaging 43.9 years. This data, published by the Czech Statistical Office, highlights how Prague is handling population aging better than most regions. The average age in the capital has only risen by half a year since 2000, remaining relatively stable over the past two decades. Prague has officially chosen its Christmas tree for 2025. A spruce from Jiřetín pod Jedlovou will illuminate the Old Town Square, marking the start of the city’s holiday season. City councillor Michal Hroza (TOP 09), responsible for infrastructure, revealed the choice on social media. “We’ve decided! This year, a spruce from Jiřetín pod Jedlovou will shine on the Old Town Square,” Hroza announced on Facebook, sharing a photo of the tree standing proudly beside a traditional wooden cabin. The spruce, which measures over 26 meters, will be shortened to around 23 meters before its journey to Prague. “It’s more than half a century old and about 11 meters wide — truly a forest giant,” Hroza wrote. After several delays and months of speculation, the American fast food chain Five Guys is finally set to open its first restaurant in Prague. The branch, located in the Máj shopping center on Národní třída, is expected to open its doors by the end of the year, according to CzechCrunch, which first reported the news.
