Tibet Open House in Prague launched a photography exhibition titled “If only for a single day…” by photographer Stanislav Doležal. The exhibition will be on display in the main gallery Monday-Friday from 13:00-18:00 until the end of September. The exhibition documents the historic meeting between the former Czech Republic’s President Václav Havel and the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The former president had also joined the nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 with the Dalai Lama, who ultimately won the prestigious award. The Dalai Lama made the visit to the country in Feb 1990 after the then President of Czechoslovakia made a personal invitation, “I would be happy if Pope John Paul II and the Tibetan Dalai Lama, visited our country even if only for a single day.” The title of the exhibition attempts to carry the enthusiastic tone of the invitation that was set 30 years ago. The tally of active cases of the new coronavirus in the Czech Republic has risen to 4,764, above the previous high of 4,737 seen in April, health ministry data showed on Sunday. The new cases are mostly registered in the north-east where a mine outbreak occurred and have so far been milder than before. The active cases have gone up as the daily has been above 100 over the past few days, outscoring the number of recoveries. Outbreaks are rising in the region, and Covid-19 is spreading to at-risk groups over the age of 65. Mostly, college students, the young women submitted online applications that promised a “comfortable start” in the industry — only to learn that the modeling job was a pornography shoot. Detectives from the National Centre for Combatting Organized Crime have uncovered a group of nine people who offered paid professional modeling photograph opportunities, but in reality, they manipulate them into filming pornographic videos and put online under the channel “Czech casting”. The nine people are accused of human trafficking, sexual coercion and rape, spokesman Jaroslav Ibehej, told police on Friday. “From 2013, they have been advertised job offers presented as professional modeling photography for women over 18, promising earnings ranging from CZK 1,000 to CZK 5,000. However, according to our investigations, it was just a pretext to manipulate the women to produce and distribute pornographic videos,” said Ibehej. The group was well organized. “They were bringing the women to the casting place, signing contracts for the casting, verifying the age of majority, and conducting professional interviews,” added Ibehej. “Czech police is still in the process of identifying all the women recruited, filmed, coerced and defrauded by this conspiracy,” the complaint says. Kramář Villa is open to the public on Saturday, as part of a series of government building “Open Day” events. Built between 1911 and 1914 by Karel Kramář, a politician and the future first Czechoslovak prime minister, the villa has over 700 m2 of floor space. Since 1998, this villa has been the official residence of the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Although it is difficult to categorize the architectural style of the villa, as Neo-Baroque features are complemented by typically Art Nouveau elements, it is considered one of the most striking examples of Prague villa design. It consisted of 56 rooms used for diverse purposes – including bedrooms, studies, dining and drawing rooms, guest suites, and even a bathhouse, on a total area of 700 square metres. Catalonia’s regional government has asked millions of people to “stay at home” as the area experienced a resurgence in coronavirus cases. It is not a legal order, but instead a “strong recommendation” intended to control contagion and avoid a full-blown lockdown. The authorities notified 1,300 new daily cases on Thursday, most of them in Barcelona and the metropolitan area. Around four million people in the Barcelona metropolitan area have been requested to only leave home for essential reasons, with cinemas, theatres and nightclubs also closing. Restaurants and bars are now limited to half capacity, a ban on visits to elderly people’s homes has been implemented. The Catalan government also announced new social distancing measures for 15 days that will limit gatherings to 10 people. The measures concern the city of Barcelona and its surrounding areas, towns and cities and will initially be in place for two weeks. The Mayors of Prague, Bratislava, Warsaw, and Budapest asked German Chancellor Angela Merkel to support the direct financing of cities from the European Recovery Fund in an open letter. The letter states that the money should be used for an eco-friendly transformation of cities. The EU intends to create a recovery fund to kick-start the economy after the COVID-19 pandemic. It is supposed to include €750 billion beyond the Union’s current multiannual financial framework. The money should be borrowed by the European Commission on the financial markets. According to European leaders, money from the fund should not just help with economic recovery, but also to meet the EU’s environmental goals, which include achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The current EU summit in Brussels, the first physical meeting of European leaders since the outbreak of the pandemic, will discuss the parameters of the recovery fund.
