Two people were killed and one seriously injured in a shooting on Thursday afternoon in the town of Smržovka, located in the Jablonec nad Nisou region of northern Czechia. Police have confirmed that the suspect was detained shortly after the incident and that there is no further threat to the public. According to police reports, the shooting took place near a local elementary school, though investigators say the incident was not connected to the school or its students. A runaway dog caused major disruption to Prague’s metro network on Thursday morning after running into a Line A tunnel. Police and firefighters spent hours tracking the animal, which proved too quick and agile to capture easily. According to police spokesman Jan Daněk, the incident began when the dog entered the tunnel near Motol Hospital station and ran toward Petřiny. Shortly afterward, it was spotted again at Bořislavka, moving closer to the city center. By mid-morning, the chase had moved above ground. “He has currently run down Dejvická Street and is still heading toward the center. Prague’s long-awaited Škoda ForCity Plus 52T trams have successfully completed all tests and obtained type approval, clearing the way for their official launch on the city’s streets. The new low-floor trams, produced by Škoda Group, underwent a rigorous homologation process that included 20,000 kilometers of test runs without passengers and another 20,000 kilometers in passenger service simulations. Starting October 2025, Czech employers will face stricter requirements when hiring foreign workers. From this date, companies must notify the Labor Office before a foreign employee begins work — not on the first working day, as was previously allowed. The new regulation, introduced by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MPSV), aims to increase transparency and improve oversight of foreign employment in the country. Employers who fail to comply will risk fines of up to CZK 3 million for allowing unregistered work. A year after Prague imposed strict limits on organized bar tours, city authorities report a noticeable drop in illegal pub crawls disturbing the historic center at night. According to the Prague City Police, officers handled 22 cases connected to unauthorized pub crawls in the past twelve months — a fraction of what used to happen before the 2024 ban. City officials introduced the restrictions to curb alcohol-fueled tourism that had become a serious nuisance for residents, especially in Prague 1, home to Old Town and Charles Bridge. The idea of a “pub crawl” originally describes a casual evening where friends visit several bars in one night — a social tradition especially common in Ireland during the holiday season, where participants dress festively and sing carols as they go. Archaeologists in the northern Czech Republic have uncovered the remains of 19 mammoths dating back to 24,000 BC while surveying a construction site. The Ústí nad Labem Region is now preparing a website featuring a 3D model of the discovery. Last autumn, archaeologist Petr Lissek, director of the Institute for Archaeological Monument Protection of Northwest Bohemia, held a piece of mammoth vertebrae in his hands for the first time during an inspection of the future construction site of the Palace of Justice in Ústí nad Labem. Instead of excitement, he was overcome with doubts about what to do next and whether it was worth continuing the project which would involve routine archaeological monitoring of a site worth several billion crowns. At the time, Lissek couldn’t have imagined that he was on the verge of a remarkable discovery. Initially, he thought the bone might have belonged to another prehistoric animal. But just a few days later, a detailed survey process began, revealing that the archaeologists had uncovered an exceptionally large and important site, though its exact structure and significance were not yet clear. After nearly a decade, Sting will once again perform in Prague — this time as the final headliner of the Metronome Festival 2026, set to take place from June 19 to 21 at Letňany Airport. The British musician, who has won 17 Grammy Awards and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will take the stage on Sunday, closing the three-day event. Organizers announced the lineup on Monday, confirming that Live Nation Czech Republic will co-produce the festival for the first time. Prague’s Botanical Garden in Troja has opened its annual autumn pumpkin exhibition, transforming the grounds into an enchanted, haunted forest. Running until November 2, 2025, the festival features creative pumpkin displays, eerie installations, family-friendly workshops, and a Halloween lantern parade.
