The First Defenestration of Prague – 601 Years Ago

Throwing out of the window is a collective dehonestation and a dishonour of official authority. However, this act is called “defenestration” (from the Latin “de” – ie, from – and “fenestra” – or window) thanks to the Czech lands, where throwing dignitaries out of windows has become not only a symbol of dissatisfaction but also chaos and suffering for whole Europe. The first occurred on July 30, 1419, but its story began four years earlier when the church burned to death its beloved master Jan Hus. His thoughts did not die with him – they spread inexorably across the kingdom, gaining more and more support among the dissatisfied people. Czech King Wenceslaus IV had to join the disputes between Catholics and Hus’ supporters who demanded an altar sacrament of Utraquist. In response to the pressure of the Roman King Sigismund and the growing Hussite arrogance, he established anti-Hussite city council in the New Town. The Hussite priests had to leave the churches, their processions were forbidden, and their brothers were thrown into jail provocatively on the day of Jan Hus’ burning. O2 Now Offers 100 GB of Data for CZK 300 per Month (With Some Conditions)

A mobile plan tends to be one of those things we just set and forget, at least until it’s time for a new phone. It shouldn’t be though. New deals and discounts hit the market every week and savvy shoppers playing the field are getting more for less. O2 has announced a new plan where you get 100GB of data for only CZK 300 per month. The offer associated with a prepaid card is more advantageous than data packages with the current FREE + tariffs plan, which have a maximum of 60 GB of data together with unlimited calls and SMS for CZK 1,249 per month. The prepaid card offers also significantly cheaper internet connection than special data tariffs for tablets and computers (the O2 Data + Stříbrný includes 30 GB of data for CZK 649 per month). Now the bad part: Internet data does not work abroad (not even in the EU). Other services are quite expensive. SMS costs CZK 2. The offer is limited. Czech Govt Introduces ‘COVID-19 Traffic Light System’ for Czech Regions

The overall epidemiological situation in the Czech Republic is progressing well, but in some areas, it is necessary to be careful, said Health Minister Adam Vojtěch. In order to combat an uptick in coronavirus cases in the country, Vojtěch presented the Czech regional traffic light rating system, which has four levels. The worst situation is still in Prague, the Moravian-Silesian region, and the Jihlava region. “There are four levels,” Vojtěch announced at a press conference. Zero-degree areas show where the risk of infection is minimal or zero. The first level is marked in green and means a sporadic occurrence of the disease but without community transmission. “The second degree is symbolized by a yellow color. These are areas where we are already monitoring a certain community transmission of the disease,” Vojtěch further explained. Radecky’s Statue to Come Back to Malostranské náměstí?

The replica of the Marian column at Old Town Square is not the only Hapsburg era monument that may be restored.  Plans to revitalize Malostranské náměstí call for the statue of Field Marshall Radecký to be returned to the square but there is some opposition to that idea as well. Marshall Wenceslas Count Radecký of Radeč (1766-1858) was a soldier of Czech origin who led many victorious campaigns in the service of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, known for the victories at the Battles of Custoza (1848) and Novara (1849) during the First Italian War of Independence. The brothers E. and J. Max were designers of the monument, cast from captured Italian guns, and solemnly unveiled in 1858, i.e. after Josef’s death, in the lower part of Malostranské Square. Prague 1 councilors supported the intention to return the monument to Malostranské náměstí and the proposal has previously been endorsed by the Commission for Culture. “Before the complete reconstruction of Malostranské náměstí, an archaeological survey will be carried out so that the erection of the monument can be incorporated into the new plan. Open House Prague 2020 Program Revealed. 73 Buildings to be Opened!

“Architecture for everyone” is the motto of Open House Prague this year, which invites visitors to see buildings and spaces that aren’t usually accessible in 10 city districts. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year we will meet our visitors on a new date, in September. To our delight, many of our partners who we had originally agreed with have decided to participate again,” says festival director Andrea Šenkyříková. Open House Prague festival will take place from September 1 to September 6, 2020. During the weekend of that week, visitors will be able to take a look around 73 usually inaccessible buildings and spaces, and starting on September 1, the weekdays will offer a supporting program consisting of guided walks, lectures, and debates on city architecture. The festival of open buildings is now a traditional architecture holiday that allows people to explore the hidden treasures of the city for free and enjoy the unique atmosphere of communality and excitement from exploring places. Beautiful views over Prague will be available from terraces and roofs, and visitors will also get to explore ancient undergrounds. The Postcard App by Česká Pošta. Do You Remember When You Last Sent a Postcard?

Do you remember when you last sent a postcard? For me it was last week when I was asked to send some to our relatives’ kids attending summer camp – they don’t use mobiles there. Luckily there was an app for that. I first considered a visit to Lokál, where they have a selection of free postcards, that they’ll also post for free if you drop them in their mailbox. However, the cards are mostly beer-related and aren’t really suitable for kids. I definitely didn’t want to go to a shop and/or post office. I found and downloaded the Pohlednice App by Česká pošta. The app is in English, lets you upload photos, write a message, add a map, address and send all for 29 Kč. After you choose ‘Create a Postcard’, you can choose the size Then you choose the layout. Belgium Removes Prague From Its Coronavirus Safe Destinations List

Belgium has taken Prague off its list of safe destinations for travel due to a spike in COVID-19 cases. The Czech Embassy in Brussels informed that Prague has been included among the orange destinations (along with the Moravian-Silesian region). It means that after returning to Belgium, it is necessary to produce a negative Covid-19 test or go into a two-week quarantine upon their return. All passengers (regardless of the country they come from) must fill in the “Public Health Passenger Locator Form” before traveling to Belgium. This form can be used to contact the traveler if an infection is detected and to start tracing other people if necessary. The increase in recent days is due, among other things, to the outbreak in the Techtle Mechtle nightclub.  From today, July 27, the public will be required also to wear a face mask in pharmacies and medical facilities, “where it is not always possible to maintain a two-meter distance from other people.” The Czech Republic reported 115 cases of the new coronavirus on Monday, bringing the country’s total to 15,324.
