Line D will consist of nine stations and connect the city center with the southeast neighborhoods. It will start from the existing station of Náměstí Míru. This station will be an interconnection hub for passengers. The route will be also linked with Line B at Olbrachtova station. The project will be carried out by Metrostav, the contractor that is specialized on the construction of metro lines and includes the erection of a train depot in the Písnice area. According to Petr Witowski, Line D will be served by the driverless trains. According to City Hall, the first section of Metro D between Pankrác to Nové Dvory, should be put into operation by the end of 2027. The Metro D line has faced numerous delays. Construction was originally supposed to start in 2010. There was a petition in 2016 to change the approved designs for the stations between Pankrác to Písnice because the designs are already outdated, and do not reflect current trends in mass transit. The completion of the metro...
Greece has reiterated its request to send children from Greek refugee camps to the Czech Republic, which if granted, would be a major reversal of previous policy regarding accepting migrants into the country. Acceptance of children from refugee camps in Greece was one of the topics discussed by the Czech Chamber of Deputies chairman Radek Vondráček (ANO) and members of the Greek parliamentary committee on public administration, public order, and justice. Vondráček said that during the negotiations with the Greeks, there was a consensus on a pan-European solution for migration, including a policy of return. “Of course, Greece also reiterated the request regarding 40 children migrants. However, our parliaments are unable to draw any conclusions because we do not have executive powers. Currently, communication between ministries is going on in private,” said the Czech Chamber of Deputies chairman. Vondráček believes that the acceptance of 40 orphans is a symbolic issue, but it may have become the subject of internal political struggles in the Czech Republic and possibly in Greece as well. “We definitely agreed on one thing, which is that a Europe-wide solution and a clear return policy must be introduced,” Vondráček stressed on migration, adding he understands that the...

Real pork lovers are worth to visit the Czech traditional meat celebration Vinohradská zabíjačka. January 23, the Vinohradský Parlament Restaurant will host annual pork festival, together with famous butcher Honza Bartoň. Late January and early February are the meatiest months in the Czech Republic. According to the medieval tradition, at this period, Czech and Moravian farmers slaughter the adult piglets and prepare various meat dishes. Mass pig slaughter is a cultural festival in many Slavic countries. In the Czech Republic, it calls Zabijačka. Why in the winter season? Historically, Zabijačka was arranged 1-2 weeks before Christmas or after the New Year. The main rule is to finish ere the start of the 40 days Fast (Great Lent). However, eating meat before Lent is not the only reason for winter slaughter. In the old days, villagers didn’t have freezers for long-term food storage. Therefore, the winter period was considered the most relevant for the longer meat preservation. This tradition was not only of practical importance but also a manifestation of respect. Slaughtering a pig was allowed only by a qualified butcher. Right after cutting the carcass, women started to prepare dishes trying to use all edible parts of the animal. The...
Shanghai Municipality has terminated its sister-city relationship with the city of Prague with immediate effect and suspended all official exchanges, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government announced on Tuesday. The decision was made given the fact that “the political prerequisite and basis for the exchanges between the two cities no longer exist,” according to a statement. “The administration of the city of Prague of the Czech Republic has repeatedly made wrongful moves on the Taiwan question and other issues that bear on the core interests of China, which has constituted a blatant interference in China’s internal affairs and a flagrant challenge to the one-China principle,” read the statement. Mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit are the foundation of relations between China and the Czech Republic, noted the Shanghai government, and urged the Prague administration to realize its mistakes as soon as possible, remove the negative impact through concrete actions, and adhere to the one-China principle. Czech President Milos Zeman has pushed ties with China. But the capital’s government has taken a much harder line, including Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib’s refusal to eject a Taiwanese diplomat from a conference at the demand of a Chinese official, and his decision to fly the...
Prague Airport, in cooperation with Apple, has launched a digital map that depicts the interior of the airport terminals in detail. This allows Apple Maps users to track their current location on the airport map, and they can easily find check-in counters, security checkpoints, shops or restaurants. Prague Airport thus ranks among the 74 airports in the world and only 15 airports in Europe that also offer this service within Apple Maps. “With the help of our interior map, passengers can easily navigate at the airport terminals, making their journey through the airport more pleasant, quicker and more efficient. The application may also be useful to those who like to plan ahead and wish to prepare for their journey. Before leaving for the airport, they may virtually look around at the terminal from which they will depart. We believe that this will make the experience of being at the airport more pleasant for our passengers,“ says Ondřej Svoboda, Manager of Marketing Communication and Corporate Identity of Prague Airport, explaining the benefits of this technology innovation for passengers, and he adds: “By launching our interior map in Apple Maps, our airport has joined major international airports, such as Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, Beijing International...
