Summer cinema sessions will start on June 18 right on the rooftop of Prague’s Exhibition Palace (Veletržní palác). That is a really unusual and inspiring place to watch well-known Czech and foreign films on the original motion picture film of the 16 and 35 mm format and enjoy the view. The cinema will be opened until October; the movies are scheduled every Tuesday and Wednesday (beginning at 21:30). The cinema hall has been there since the Palace was opened. It was located in the basement of the building and called Kino Favorit, and then renamed to Kino Veletrhy. The cinema was, unfortunately, destroyed by fire in August 1974. With hundreds of millions of crowns worth of damage, it was too costly to rebuild the palace. While there was discussion and heated debate on its future, it stood empty for two decades – there was even talk of tearing it down, until it came into the hands of the National Gallery, which was looking for space to exhibit its modern art collection. After two years of stagnating beer consumption in the Czech Republic, domestic consumer interest has gone up. Some 16.5 million hectoliters of beer were consumed in the Czech Republic last year, according to the Czech Brewery and Malt Association (ČSPS). Exports of beer in 2018 totaled 5.1 million hectoliters. The biggest markets were Slovakia, Germany, Poland, and Russia. Beer exports to EU countries in 2018 increased by 10 percent and currently amount to around 80 percent of overall exports. Czech beer exports to countries outside the European Union increased by one fifth in 2018. Russia increased its imports of Czech beer by 54 percent, mainly because of the World Championship in Football. Among the new importers of Czech beer are Antarctica, Angola, Bahrain, the Bermuda Islands, Philippines, Senegal and Ecuador. For the first year, the volume of beer in tanks and legs surpasses the amount of bottled and canned beer sold abroad. On an international basis, the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita and has held that position for 25 years, as long as the independent Czech Republic has existed. The unemployment rate fell from 2.7% to 2.6% in May, reaching a new historic low, mainly due to seasonal work The jobless rate fell as expected and the number of vacancies reached a new record, at 346,000, which is 6,600 more than in the previous month. However, job vacancies, year-on-year, are slowing down and month-on-month increases have already been significantly lower than in the previous year. Similarly, the year-on-year decline in the number of unemployed people is slowing down, though in May it fell to 200,000 for the first time. However, this development is largely related to the already exhausted labour market and the lack of suitable workers. The current slowdown in the global economy is not yet visible in the Czech Republic’s overheated labour market, which is not too surprising because the job market has a certain momentum and responds to the economy with some delay. However, signs of a slowdown are visible in the German job market, where the unemployment rate increased in May for the first time since 2013. Regular blood donors will be able to use public transport in Prague for free for one year. The idea is part of a project that the City Hall runs with the Czech Red Cross. The offer will concern donors who have participated in more than 80 blood donations. According to the data, 736 Praguers reached this number last year. The Czech Republic is lacking around 100,000 blood donors. While existing donors are getting older, fewer new ones are coming forward every year. Experts say commercial blood donation has also been contributing to the problem. Transfusion centres say that the biggest shortage of blood occurs in the summer months when the number of accidents increases at the same time as many donors are away. At present, there are some 270,000 voluntary blood donors in the country with a population of 10.5 million, which is far below the 4 percent of inhabitants that the Council of Europe recommends as a sufficient share of blood donors. The fourth edition of Metronome Festival Prague set to take place at the Prague’s Výstaviště exhibition ground will offer performances from some of the biggest foreign and domestic names from a series of musical genres, including British rockers Band of Sculls, who are the latest addition and will make their Czech debut at the festival. The high temperatures in Prague have caused tram tracks to bend at Na Veselí street (Nusle). The incident was observed yesterday, Tuesday 5th. The trams did not run for two hours along the Náměstí Bratří Synků – Vozovna Pankrác line. The bended tracks at the spot were fixed by the same evening. The spokeswoman of DPP stated that this was the first big case for this year. The technicians had to cut the faulty track and place it back. To prevent problems like this, drivers are instructed to slow down near vulnerable areas. The track spots with high sensitivity seem to be the tram tracks above the road levels and old ones. More than 120,000 citizens marched in Prague on Monday to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, following ongoing public discontent and a recent decision from the European Commission (EC) that Babiš has significant conflicts of interest related to his private businesses. The decision follows an initiative from Transparency International Czech Republic (TI-CZ), which filed a complaint to the EC last year highlighting Babiš’s conflicts of interest. The complaint resulted in an audit by EC officials in the Czech Republic, an analysis of the EC’s Legal Service and, ultimately, led to the Commission’s decision last week that Czech Republic repay 17 million euro of EU subsidies that Babiš’s company received over the last two years. “It is good news not only for us as authors of the initiative, but mainly a victory for all citizens and taxpayers in the Czech Republic and Europe. Prime Minister Babiš’s unprecedented conflict of interest has been confirmed. Czech Airlines has resumed flights from Prague to Odesa from May 30, 2019, according to a posting on the Facebook page of the Odesa airport. The flights will be operated up to four times a week. In particular, from Odesa from May 30 to June 17 the plane will depart on Tuesdays and Fridays, from June 18 to July 1 – also on Sundays, from July 2 – on Thursdays. Departure time is 5:00 local time. From Prague, from May 30 to June 16, the flight will be operated on Mondays and Thursdays, from June 17 flights on Saturdays will also be added, and from July 1 – on Wednesdays. Departure time is 22:45 local time. The cost of a one-way ticket starts from UAH 2,700.
