Digital signage, which was launched for passengers at Prague Airport and is located at the entrance to pier B in Terminal 1, is available in six language versions. The signage offers information displayed on digital screens and reflects the current traffic and passenger flow throughout the day. The new technology is now being tested. If it proves successful, the airport is planning to install it in other locations as part of its daily operations. “As the number of flights at Prague Airport continues increasing, so does the number of passengers with specific language requirements. Entry and exit from Karlovo náměstí have been closed from October 9, 2018. The closure was so the escalators could be changed to newer models and on new lighting, power distribution, switchboards, and low-current equipment. Next Friday, 16 August, the metro station will totally reopen. The whole reconstruction was made by HOCHTIEF CZ – BREMA company. Expected reconstruction costed a total of 225 million CZK, (83.6 paid by European funds). Similar long-term closures took place last year along the busy transport hubs of Náměstí Republiky and Anděl stations, also on the B line. Karlovo náměstí is one of the original stops on the Metro B line, which opened in 1985, with stops from Florence to Smíchovské nádraží. The B line was the third of the three existing lines to start operation. The escalators that are being replaced are from the original construction and have exceeded their planned lifespans. The new escalators are supposed to be safer, more efficient and more reliable. The Prague Metro opened in 1974. It now has three lines and 61 stations covering a network of over 65 kilometers. The QS Best Student Cities 2019 has placed both Prague and Brno among the most attractive cities in the world to pursue your studies, according to the students themselves. The survey which was completed by approximately 87,000 students considered factors typically important to students and recent graduates such as; culture, affordability, nightlife, employment opportunities, diversity, ease of getting around, friendliness and so on. The QS Top Universities article states that students specifically noted the „affordability of everything and the fantastic sights”, as well as the city’s “integration of culture and diversity.“ Not to mention the post-graduate opportunities. Prague-born Jewish novelist’s literary estate, including exercise book in which he practiced Hebrew, had been held by his sisters until Israel’s National Library won the ownership battle The National Library of Israel said on Wednesday it received the last part of a collection of Franz Kafka’s writings that it planned to put on line, after winning an ownership battle for part of the Prague-born Jewish novelist’s literary estate. The papers had been held by sisters Eva Hoffe and Ruth Wiesler, who argued they had legally inherited them from their mother, Esther Hoffe. She was secretary to Kafka’s friend, biographer and executor Max Brod, who ignored the German-language author’s dying wish to burn all his unpublished work. In one of his notebooks — revealed to the public for the first time in Jerusalem on Wednesday — he sketched a man lying in bed, perhaps depicting his own terminal illness and auguring the end. The picture above is not showing Hanavský pavilon, but the view from Hanavský pavilon. There is actually a restaurant in this peculiar structure, but I warn you right here not to try it. It is totally overpriced and in my experience, the personnel is not very friendly. And, on top of it, the view you can enjoy without going into the restaurant. However, the structure of the pavilion and its history are quite interesting. The structure was built as a promotion of an ironwork factory for the exhibition in 1891 and was considered a temporary structure which should last only for the time of the exhibition. However, it was considered a valuable technical development, and after the exhibition, it was disassembled and rebuilt in a present location in Letná park. It is the first structure in Prague built from a cast iron, concrete, and glass. It was designed in baroque style and it is surviving more than 128 years longer than originally planned. The City of Prague has canceled its fireworks on New Year’s Eve replacing them by video mapping. We are talking about the fireworks held annually on the evening of January 1. “This is a step towards not only the citizens who are sensitive to loud noise, but also animals that are subjected to unnecessary stress. I am sure that everyone will like the new form of the New Year’s tradition,” said Prague City Councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09). Last year’s show on Jan. 1 lasted 10 minutes and 52 seconds and cost some Kč 1.7 million, which was higher than the recent average of Kč 1 million for the shows. The theme was the Velvet Revolution of 1989. The previous administration also explored silent fireworks but found they are suited to much smaller shows such as garden parties. Light shows with drones, though, have already taken place for example in Warsaw, Poland. Many people have complaints not about the large organized show on January 1 at 6 pm, but the disorganized use of fireworks on midnight on December 31, and the use of random fireworks starting around Christmas. People, in particular, say it disturbs pets, who have acute hearing.
The European Commission has accused Czech mobile phone operators O2 and T-Mobile as well as the Czech telecom infrastructure provider CETIN of breaching EU antitrust rules. The move by the European Commission could make it more difficult for telecoms operators to do similar deals to share networks, seen as key to saving costs and reducing time in the face of regulatory barriers to mergers. The European Commission said the deal, which the country’s two biggest mobile operators and Cetin struck in 2011 and subsequently expanded, may breach the bloc’s competition rules. The network sharing agreement now covers all mobile technologies including 4G and 85% of the Czech population. “We have concerns that the network sharing agreement between the two major operators in Czechia reduces competition in the more densely populated areas of the country,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement. The EU competition enforcer, which opened an investigation in October 2016 and can hand out fines up to 10% of a company’s global revenue, said the deal may remove the incentives for the two operators to improve their networks and services.
