Support for remaining in the EU stands at well over 80 percent in the majority of member states, a new continent-wide poll has found – with Britain’s political crisis apparently a poor advert for leaving. The survey by Kantar asked people how they would vote in an in-out referendum and found that Luxembourg (94 percent), Portugal (92 percent), Ireland (91 percent), and the Netherlands (91 percent) had the highest support for EU membership out of the 28 countries in the bloc. Apart from the UK, the highest level of support for leaving was in the Czech Republic, where 66 percent supported Remain and 34 percent Leave. Italy was close behind as the next most Eurosceptic country, with 72 percent Remain and 28 percent Leave. Austria and France were the third and fourth most Eurosceptic. It’s not surprising that Czech skepticism or opposition to the European Union is strongest amongst the unemployed and self-employed. Prague’s gastronomic concept of Martin Barry’s Manifesto is getting ready to open a new branch on the other side of the Vltava river. This time, water, beer, and Smíchov will be the main focus of the new Manifesto branch. The second temporary market, which was recently invested in by Jakob Havrlanta’s band Rockaway Capital, will be developed on an empty provisional parking lot next to the Národní Dům building in Smíchov, which under the direction of Torino-Praga Invest, will soon be going under reconstruction. Manifesto wants to be situated in a local area, to attract the most customers, but even though it’s located right between Újezd and Anděl, it tends to be very empty during the day. The one in Smíchov won’t follow the original container concept from Florenc, which was founded last year with the partnership of Penta, and a street furniture supplier named mmcité. A ban on fires including smoking in Prague at places with a high fire risk is now in effect due to dry conditions. It will be in place until the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) changes the declared risk level. Prohibited activities include: making or keeping open fires; smoking (with the exception of electronic cigarettes); using pyrotechnic articles (fireworks); using flying lanterns, other lanterns or torches; throwing burning or smoldering objects; using water from a firefighting source for purposes other than extinguishing fires Czech firefighters said the most frequent causes of fires they had to put out were human neglect, technical defects of vehicles and machines. The fourth annual Beer and Burger (‘Pivo a Burger’) Festival will return to Karlínské náměstí on Sunday, May 19. A total of 25 burger stands will be operating throughout the day, including many of the Czech favorite food trucks and burger joints. You can taste burgers from several Karlin restaurants but also some of Prague’s highest-rated burgers, like George Prime Burger, Mozaika, Naše maso, Blackdog Cantina, and many others. More than 300,000 visitors will come to Prague this long Easter weekend, national tourism office expects. Some hotels claim to be almost sold out for Easter holidays. These include the hotel chain OREA Hotels & Resorts. “Most tourists arrive from Germany, with a 12% overnight stays more than last year,” says Gorjan Lazarov, director of OREA Hotels & Resorts. For them, their neighbor the Czech Republic is a popular destination, particularly for short holidays, according to the tourism office. More and more Czechs go to Prague on Easter. “We have a record increase in the Czech clientele, with 205% overnight stays more on Easter holidays,” adds Lazarov. “Given that this year’s Catholic and Orthodox Easter again falls on different dates, the traffic will spread over two weeks. We expect 7 percent more guests to visit Prague than last year, ” says PCT spokeswoman Barbora Hrubá. “We expect more visitors from the United States,” added Barbora Hrubá. The prices of some vegetables, especially potatoes, in the Czech Republic are increasing dramatically due to a significant drop in production. Consumers are paying almost 25% more for vegetables (including lettuce, peas, cucumbers) and over 67% more for potatoes. At this point, some imported tropical fruits are cheaper than locally produced potatoes. The main culprit of a massive surge of vegetable prices in the Czech Republic is an 18% drop in production compared to last year’s harvest. According to the Czech Statistical Office, the total harvest of vegetables (excluding potatoes) in 2017 reached 241,692 tons on an area of 10,237 hectares, while in 2018 farmers harvested only 198,863 tons of vegetables from a slightly larger area of 10,404 hectares. Potatoes, a staple foodstuff in the Czech Republic, followed the same trend. In 2017 the harvest totaled at 583,560 tons, which is by 105,410 tons (15.3 percent) less than in 2017. Out of vegetables, the largest decrease in crop show lettuces (49.5 percent), green peas (35.3 percent), gherkins (34.6 percent), and cabbages (34. percent). Onions are down by 11 percent. Czech GDP growth was 2.9 percent last year, which means that Czechia is the 13th fastest growing economy in the European Union. In this regard, the Czech economy surpasses the original EU Member States, including Germany, and the EU average as a whole. The Irish, Maltese, and Polish economies grew the fastest last year, while the economies of Italy, Denmark, Great Britain, and Germany slowed down. Surprisingly, the Czech economy grew even though it is strongly linked to the underperforming countries. “New member countries are growing faster, except for Ireland and Malta. Old member states have been weaker,” said Marek Rojíček, head of the Czech Statistical Office. However, the growth of the Czech economy slowed down in 2018 compared to 2017, from 4.5 percent to 2.9 percent of GDP. Consumption and investment activity were the main drivers of the economy last year. On the other side, it was weakened by the decline in foreign demand and also by the labor shortage.
