A section of the line C of the Prague underground shall be covered by LTE until the end of the year, reports mobilenet.cz. Completion of the coverage of the whole Prague underground is planned by 2022, although the original deadline was 2019. The slow progress in the coverage is due to administrative hurdles in obtaining construction permit. The Director of the Prague City Transport, Petr Witowski, said that he would like to speed up the whole process and preferentially cover the platforms. The deal between the city and the mobile operators should be in place for 20 years, with the companies set to pay the transit authority CZK 120 million for the first half of that period. The mobile signal coverage in the Prague metro is currently poor, at the 2G standard and only in the majority of metro stations. Construction works and cable installation will be performed in phases and during night hours when the metro is closed to the public (1:00 to 3:00 a.m.). The greenery in Prague – forests and parks – will be increased through planting, and replacing old and diseased trees, which will be recycled into benches or wood for fireplaces and boilers. One of the most popular and largest green areas of the capital, Stromovka, will get 142 new trees in the spring. The planting will be held in two stages. “We finished the first part in the autumn of last year, during which 105 new trees went to the largest park in Prague. Another 37 trees will be added during the spring months this year,” said Petra Fišerová from the company Lesy of the City of Prague (LHMP), which takes care of greenery in the city. New trees, according to forestry projects, create a continuous collection that surrounds Rudolfův pond. “Some trees are planted as substitute trees for the surviving skeleton trees or for the ones that have had mushroom diseases after the floods in 2013 and had to be removed from the park. The unemployment rate in the Czech Republic swelled to 3.3% in January from 3.1% in December, due to typical seasonality during winter months, according to the Czech Labour Office data released on February 8. “The situation on the labour market has been usual in the past month. Compared to previous years, however, it is more favourable,” the Office said. According to Labour Office General Manager Katerina Sadilkova, a decline in seasonal work has been recorded especially in construction and agriculture. The number of the unemployed amounted to 13,523, a decline compared to December’s figure 44,171. There were 245,057 jobless people, the lowest January value since 1997. Nearly 7.9 million guests stayed in Prague last year, which is 3.2 percent more than the number of visitors in 2017. The number of tourists from outside the Czech Republic who came to the capital for the whole year was 6.67 million. However, visitors from the Czech Republic also added to the numbers significantly, by 12%, while the number of visitors from abroad increased by only 1.7%. Last year, the number of nights spent at Prague’s accommodation facilities reached almost 18.26 million, which is 1.1 percent more than last year. The overnight stays of foreign tourists were overwhelming – over 16 million, the rest being home-grown. While the number of foreigners stagnated, the number of overnight stays for Czech tourists increased by almost one tenth. One of Prague’s oldest squares has been waiting for a complete renovation for years. In mid-August 1945, hundreds of young Jews, survivors of the Nazi Holocaust, posed for three remarkable photographs in front of Jan Hus memorial. Those standing in front of the memorial were to become known as “The Boys”: the photographs of them were taken just before they boarded Royal Air Force transport planes and a new life in Britain. Ten Stirling Aircraft of the RAF’s 196 Squadron flew on August 14 from Prague to Crosby on Eden, near the Lake District, with the first batch of children and their adult escorts. This May, under the auspices of the 45 Aid Society, some of those in the original pictures — and scores of their children, grand-children and great-grandchildren — will once again gather in Prague, to recreate the historic pictures. After the war ended, Britain agreed to take in 1,000 orphaned child survivors of the concentration camps. Although the Prague City Council approved the reconstruction of the dilapidated and preserved monument of the Old Town Market in the historical centre of Prague in the middle of 2016, work has not yet started. Former Czech Republic defender Tomáš Řepka has been convicted of fraud and sentenced to 15 months in jail. The Prague 6 district court ruled that the 45-year-old Řepka sold a luxury car to a woman even though he didn’t own it. The former West Ham and Fiorentina player had been renting the car at the time. In a deal Řepka signed, he promised to return the money if the ownership was not transferred to the woman, but he didn’t do that. Řepka is appealing the court decision, the latest legal problem for the former player who received a six-month sentence last year for advertising sexual services on the Internet in the name of his ex-wife. December industrial production fell by 1.4% due to the lower number of working days and fall in car production. For the whole of 2018, industry grew by 3% but this marks a deceleration from the 6.5% pace in 2017 and we expect a further slowdown this year due to the weaker automotive sector. Industrial production declined by 1.4% year-on-year in December. However, this was partly due to one missing working day and adjusting for that, industry would have grown by 1.8% YoY, similar to the rate seen in November, though below the whole year average of 3%. However, car production was growing at a surprisingly strong rate in October and November, so lower production in December could be a result of company holidays. December’s industrial figures are usually quite volatile so we shouldn’t draw strong conclusions from them.
