The Ukrainian flag, which had been flying on the facade of Prague’s National Museum since the Russian invasion in 2022, has been taken down. In its place now hangs a banner promoting an exhibition of the Ethiopian fossils Lucy and Selam, lent to the Czech Republic for the first time. Museum officials confirmed that the decision was tied to promoting the exhibition, not to political pressure. “The National Museum is currently the only institution in Europe displaying the original fossils of human ancestors Lucy and Selam. To highlight this world-class event, we need to use all available space on the historic building’s facade,” said spokesperson Kristina Kvapilová in a statement to Novinky.cz. The change has fueled speculation online that the Ethiopian side requested the flag’s removal as a condition for lending the fossils. Political context has also intensified the debate. The National Theatre will celebrate the launch of its 2025/26 season with an expansive, free event on Monday, 1 September 2025, from 14:00 to 22:00, taking place outdoors on Střelecký Island in Prague. The National Open Air festival brings together every artistic ensemble of the National Theatre. Attendees of all ages can enjoy dance and vocal performances, creative workshops, a zone for children, and opportunities for meet-and-greets with actors, dancers, and creators. Throughout the day, the program includes a charity bazaar featuring clothes donated by National Theatre artists, a zone dedicated to sustainable fashion (NDup), a book and poster stall, promotional material, a photo booth, and ticket sales. Prague is preparing to expand its tram network with two new lines that will link growing neighborhoods to the city’s transport hubs. One will connect Libuš with the planned Metro D station Nové Dvory, while the other will serve Žižkov and end at Jarov. The Prague City Transport Company (DPP) confirmed the contracts for both projects earlier this month. A new link between Libuš and Nové Dvory The southern part of the city will see a 1.8-kilometer extension running along Novodvorská Street. The line will end at a new loop around Novodvorská and Durychova Streets, where the Nové Dvory stop is planned. Two additional stops—Chýnovská and Přírodní—will replace the current bus connections, ensuring smoother transfers to the future Metro D. A tram line through Žižkov to Jarov The second project, about two kilometers long, will reuse the former railway corridor near the Žižkov Freight Station, an area now undergoing redevelopment. Six stops are planned, including Nový Žižkov, Nákladová, Malešická, and Nad Kapličkou. A single-platform stop at Habrová will serve trams arriving only from the north. But Czech concert organizers say the story doesn’t hold up. Ondřej Pojzl of Live Nation, the country’s biggest promoter of international concerts, told iDNES.cz that Prague is not on Oasis’ schedule. “I don’t know the details of the European tour, but I know it won’t be Prague,” he said, adding that he doubts any other promoter would take on the show. For the first time in the Czech Republic, Prague will host KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities, a production by Cirque du Soleil that has captivated audiences across the world. The show opens September 3, 2025, and will run until October 12 under a massive big top on Letenská pláň. On August 27, construction crews began raising the enormous marquee at Letná. The tent, standing 19 meters high and 50 meters in diameter, will seat about 2,500 spectators. More than a hundred workers handled the installation, securing the structure with over 1,200 support poles. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said that he will propose ending the free movement of Russian diplomats in Schengen area as part of the 19th sanctions package to be unveiled next month. “I will keep proposing to end the free movement of Russian diplomats in Schengen,” Lipavsky told Politico on Tuesday, stressing that it is an “an unnecessary advantage” Europe gives to Russia. Prague 1 has introduced a new measure to improve safety in one of its busiest tourist zones. Electric scooters are now banned from Nerudova Street, the road connecting Malostranské náměstí with Prague Castle, after repeated accidents involving riders and pedestrians. The district installed new traffic signs at both ends of the street, formally prohibiting scooters from entering. According to the city hall, the move comes after several collisions, some of which required medical assistance. Officials say Nerudova’s narrow sidewalks and heavy foot traffic made the ban unavoidable. Deputy Mayor for Transport Vojtěch Ryvola explained that Nerudova is not suited for fast-moving vehicles. “Scooter riders often used the steep downhill stretch as a race track, which created dangerous situations. Prague will once again have a direct air connection to Morocco. German low-cost airline Eurowings has announced a new route linking the Czech capital with Marrakech, starting on 8 November 2025. The flights will run twice a week throughout the winter season, making it easier for travelers to reach one of North Africa’s most popular destinations. The schedule shows flights departing from Prague on Thursdays and on either Saturdays or Sundays. The Thursday service leaves Václav Havel Airport at 11:20 a.m. and arrives in Marrakech at 3:50 p.m. The return leg departs Marrakech at 4:40 p.m., landing in Prague at 9:00 p.m. The weekend rotation is set for late evening, with departures from Prague at 8:35 p.m. and arrival in Marrakech just after midnight. Czech employers are warning of a deepening shortage of technical staff, according to a new report from the Czech Chamber of Commerce. The group said demand is especially high for electricians, welders, plumbers, and mechanics, and that the shortfall is expected to grow in the coming years. “We can expect the shortage of qualified workers in technical fields to rise by thousands within five to ten years,” said Helena Ulovcová, Secretary of the Chamber’s Education Section. The warning comes despite a recent increase in enrollment at schools that offer a qualification certificate. According to the National Pedagogical Institute, about 36,560 students joined such programs last year, up from roughly 30,200 in 2021.
