Throughout the year, several public holidays are specific to the Czech Republic so we thought it might be interesting to give you a detailed list of them! Ten public holidays during 2019 fall on weekdays. This year, there are two four-day weekends: late March – early April (March 30 to April 2), and then in July (July 5 to 8). This means that over the course of the year there will be just 251 working days. Czech Tourism, Prague Airport, Central Bohemia Tourism, and Prague City Tourism have all joined forces to spread holiday cheer. To celebrate their subway collaboration on display at the 53rd Street and 5th Avenue station, they’re giving away a trip for two to the Czech Republic for five nights– with airfare included. The agency Loosers is behind the creative idea and the slogan has also added interesting visual processing. On advertising billboards, the most famous monuments (for example the Týnský Cathedral, Prague Castle Cathedral, Clock Tower) are covered with pixels. The campaign to promote tourism in Prague and Central Bohemia will run until the end of the year and includes approximately 1,000 advertising spaces on New York underground trains and 80 advertising spaces in the underground station on 53rd Street and 5th Avenue, right in the center of Manhattan. “The number of serviced passengers on direct flights to North America has grown by almost 67% this year. The Czech Republic is the largest exporter of toys in the European Union, exporting over two billion euros worth a year. The country outpaces even Germany, according to a new study published by UniCredit. Lego accounts for two-thirds of total production, with the Danish firm now employing more than 2,000 people at its factory in Kladno (pictured above), which was significantly extended in 2016. “Even without Lego, the Czechs would still be the second-biggest toy exporters in the EU”, said UniCredit Bank analyst Lubomír Koršňák. The Czech Republic, along with Slovakia, has been the fastest-growing toy exporter in the EU since 2004. The value of toy exports has increased more than 10 times in both countries compared to 2005. “The Czech Republic overtook Germany in 2012,” added Mr Koršňák. “In addition to Slovakia and the Czech Republic, significant increases in toy exports have also during the same period been recorded in Estonia, Greece and Poland.” Author: red
Public transport in the Czech Republic will be greatly reduced on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. On 31st December 2018, metro runs a normal service, extended until 02:30 with the interval of 10 minutes. Trams run a normal service during the day until 20:00. From 20:00-07:00 night trams run in 20-minute intervals. The Funicular Railway at Petrin operates 09:00-22:00. On January 1st, 2019, metro and trams run a Sunday service: metro trains in 6-8 minute intervals plus regular trams. The Funicular Railway at Petrin operates a normal service. Yesterday Cardinal Dominik Duka welcomed people who are homeless, impoverished, isolated and refugees to the Archbishop’s Palace for a traditional Christmas lunch. Shared seating for 300 guests at the Christmas Day lunch was organized for the 20th year in a row by the lay Catholic movement Community of Sant’Egidio; the community organized Christmas lunches in 70 countries worldwide yesterday for a total of 260 000 impoverished and isolated people. The menu included beef stock with liver dumplings, roast duck and beef in cream sauce, and Christmas cookies. Each guest received a Christmas present such as a coat, socks, or a warm scarf and everyone received personal hygiene supplies. He clinked a glass of champagne with the guests and shook hands with all of them. “I wish you quiet and peace in soul, inner calm and reconciliation. Orlík takes its name from ‘orel’, the Czech word for an eagle; and indeed for many centuries this rocky outcrop rising 200 feet above the river Vltava must have made a dramatic eyrie for the original fortified manor. Its appearance today — a neo-gothic fantasy floating only just above water-level — is the result, prosaically, of the construction of Czechoslovakia’s largest hydroelectric dam in the 1950s. Orlík Chateau is located on the border of South and Central Bohemia. The castle was expanded in the 16th century after a fire that destroyed Orlík. Under the stewardship of the famous field-marshall Karl Philipp Schwarzenberg (1771-1820) and his descendants, the house and park began to take on their current romantic appearance. A fourth floor was added, and the grounds were extensively planted with trees in the English fashion. Finally, between 1850 and 1861, the entire house was remodelled in neo-gothic style under the Prague academician Bernhard Grueber. When walking the streets of Prague city center I feel like I’m juggling two different worlds. One world is very busy, with shiny and colorful windows and full of people. But just one step can throw you into a quiet street with just a few random searching for the first world or locals running somewhere they need to be. Like Zlatá ulice. Thirteen miners died and another 10 suffered injuries after a methane explosion at the ČSM hard coal mine in the north-east of the Czech Republic on Thursday. Eleven of the dead were Polish nationals. The Czech public television said three of the injured were still hospitalized in the city of Ostrava, with one of them in critical condition. The explosion occurred about 800 meters underground. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Czech counterpart Andrej Babis have offered their condolences to the families of the victims. The two leaders were expected to arrive at the mine on Friday. OKD managing director Boleslav Kowalczyk confirmed that the search of the scene had to be called off. “Unfortunately, we have reached a point where it was impossible to move forward, because there was a fire raging and zero visibility,” he said. For the 11th year in a row, Prague is hosting a ‘free sports week’ from December 25th until December 31st. The purpose of this event is to offer everyone a chance to try out a new sport or explore new sports venues. It will be possible to make reservations to certain locations from December 23rd.
