LG’s latest venture is well outside the company’s usual repertoire of phones, TVs, large appliances and the like. The electronics giant is stepping into the world of automated beer brewing with the LG HomeBrew. LG HomeBrew is set to make its debut at CES 2019 in early January. It’s the lazy person’s solution to creating your very own beer at home because it automates every single step of the process. A free companion app (for Android and iOS devices) lets users check HomeBrew’s status at anytime, anywhere. The HomeBrew relies on single-use capsules which contain malt, yeast, hop oil, and flavoring. Once the capsules are inserted into the machines, simply press a button and the fermentation, carbonation, and aging process happens automatically. Once it’s done and you’re enjoying your beer, the HomeBrew will clean itself ready for the next round of brewing. LG will offer capsules for five beer styles at launch: American IPA American Pale Ale English Stout Belgian Witbier Czech Pilsner LG hasn’t announced prices for the capsules yet either. For the first nine months of 2017, the population of the Czech Republic grew by nearly 28,000 to a total of 10,637,794, a 0,2% increase in total population from the beginning of the year. The main reason is the migration flow from Ukraine (8,900), Slovakia (3,900), Romania (1,500) and Bulgaria (1,400), according to the preliminary data of the Czech Statistical Institute. The number of births exceeds the number of deaths. Between January and September, 86,600 babies were born in the Czech Republic, almost 100 less than in the same period last year. Less than half of the parent couples of the newborns have a civil marriage – 48.9%. The number of deaths increased by 1300 to nearly 85,374. In the first five months of 2018, 33,149 people emigrated to the Czech Republic and 16,791 people left it. The data also show a rise in the number of marriages, up 1,400 compared to a year ago. Articles about parks are some of my favorite on any Spotted by Locals site. I need to balance the rush of the city with some fresh air. Obora Hvězda is just perfect for that. Beside other parks in the wider center of Prague, Obora Hvězda has a very forest character. But central part hides beautiful renaissance summer palace, and you might suddenly feel very aristocratic walking around. The summer palace was build in the 16th century and has an interesting six-pointed star shape. It’s very noticeable from the airplane by the way! Rumour has it that it was built out of love and given to the beloved lady of Ferdinand II. (Tirol), a gentleman from the Habsburg monarchy who was responsible for Czech lands at the time. It hosts exhibitions, but it’s closed in winter. The park itself is accessible all year long and is actually loved by locals for cross-country skiing. I used to ski there myself when I was little! Well, those winters were much whiter as the majority of Czech senior citizens would say. The Czech unemployment rate was unchanged at around a two-decade low of 2.8 percent of the workforce in November, the Labour Ministry said on Monday. The figure, the lowest number for that month since 1995, was in line with analysts’ forecasts for 2.8 percent. The number of jobless dropped to 215,010, which is the lowest figure since June 1997, while the number of vacancies increased to over 323,500. Last November, unemployment stood at 3.5 percent. Czech unemployment is the lowest in the European Union, according to Eurostat data, with a lack of workers helping push up wages quickly and adding inflationary pressures to the domestic economy. The lowest rate of unemployment, 1.8 percent, is in the Pardubice region, while the highest rate is in the region of Moravia-Silesia and Ústí nad Labem with 4.3 percent of people out of work. In Prague, the rate of unemployment came in at 1.9% where there were officially 65,009 open vacancies registered with the Labor Office. The Security Information Service of the Czech Republic, also called Bezpečnostní Informační Služba or BIS, announced that in the last five years they have exposed dozens of Russian and Chinese spies. BIS Director Michal Koudelka said that BIS have also uncovered an entire espionage network belonging to Russian Special Services. “We had an extremely successful period of cooperation with Czech security forces and foreign partners,” he stated. According to the Director of the Czech Security Service, they have prevented and stopped the activities of “dozens of Russian and Chinese intelligence officers” or else recommended denying them accreditation or expelled them using so-called “silent methods.” At the beginning of this year, the BIS reported that “they have successfully exposed a network of one of the Russian special services and fully paralyzed the network’s activities.” Koudelka brought up the three diplomats that were expelled from the country as a joint response of European countries to the poisoning of former Russian spymaster Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, England. The eighth edition of the unconventional USE-IT map of Prague designed especially for young travellers by locals has been published by Czech NGO Jůzit. The new edition of the USE-IT Prague map shows you the city through the eyes of local people and allows young travellers to escape from the tourist bubble and instead see the real Prague. “The essence of the USE-IT map is that it has been created by those who have been born in or have lived in the city for a very long time,” said Anna Horáčková, a member of the USE-IT Prague team. The map features more than 80 tips on where to go in the city, including parks, monuments, galleries, sightseeing spots, and local businesses, which, according to locals, are definitely worth a visit. “We have to include museums, galleries, bars and cafes, of course, but we also pay attention to the desires of the jazz listener, traditional kitchen fan, and vegetarian,” said Horáčková. Uber rival Taxify has ordered its drivers to halt all Prague rides until the app meets the conditions required from a regular taxi service. Taxify, which offered a cheap alternative to Uber with promises of better pay and conditions for drivers, confirmed it had “temporarily stopped” operations in order to clarify its position with the transport authority. The Estonian company, which has spread across Europe since it was founded in 2013, said it already had a fleet of several hundred drivers in Prague and it charges an average 15 per cent commission for drivers, according to its website. “Our pricing system is the same as our competitors,” one help note for drivers says. Taxify may still appeal the verdict. Taxify considers itself as more a tech startup than a taxi company and aims to attract customers who got fond of Uber. Taxify sets rules of behaviour for their drivers, with strict protocols for how to greet passengers. Prague’s Department of Public Transportation (DPP) has decorated a tram with Christmas lights and an angel on its flatbed back. It will alternately serve routes 9 and 10 until January 6, 2019. It’s a Škoda 15T, decked out with more than 9 thousand lights, attached to the vehicle by the employees from the Motol garage. Prague City Tourism estimates that there will be a total number of 650,000 visitors in Prague this December, of which up to 280,000 will arrive in the capital to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. Another 80,000 visitors are expected to come to the city only for one day to see the markets and go Christmas shopping. “This December, especially during the Christmas and New Year period, we expect Prague to bring in a record number of visitors. We do not expect to see a significant increase in the total number of visitors, however, but we are expecting the number of Czech visitors from other parts of the Czech Republic to rise by 10% compared to last December,” says the Prague City Tourism spokesman, Barbora Hrubá. Europeans are the biggest group of visitors to Prague, with French, Italian, Austrian, Slovakian, British, and Russian visitors making up the majority. Rows of concrete roadblocks have been installed in Wenceslas Square and náměstí Republiky to protect the place from a terrorist attack by car. The barriers have been widely criticized for their unappealing appearance. Others have been questioning the effectiveness of the roadblocks against the force of large vehicles coming at high speed. The main focus is on the city’s Christmas markets, shopping malls, airports, railway stations and public transport. Concrete roadblocks will stand until January 9 – end of the Christmas holidays. “Just like last year, we are installing roadblocks in Wenceslas Square, and Náměstí Republiky for this year’s Advent time. These measures complement the existing barriers that have been in Old Town Square for several weeks,” said city spokesman Vít Hofman.
