Prague’s retailers can look forward to significantly higher sales to Chinese shoppers as the National Day of the People’s Republic of China on October 1 kicks-off the Golden Week of holidays. Some 705 million Chinese are expected to travel during this time, with 6 million going abroad. Fashion Arena Prague Outlet, the most well-known outlet center in the country, expects a 75% increase in the number of Chinese customers during the Golden Week compared to the norm. Last year, Chinese citizens spent CZK 1.9 trillion on travel during the Golden Week. The best countries for expats have been ranked by InterNations as part of their annual Expat Insider survey. We take a look at the results. Countries are ranked according to six major indices: Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Family Life, Personal Finance, and Cost of Living. There are an estimated 57 million expatriates across the globe with the term ‘expat’ no longer limited to corporate employees relocating from a company’s headquarters. Instead, more and more expats are moving overseas in search of a dream. Some have chosen remote jobs and are now working from a location they love. This latest survey looks at how expats’ motivations for moving are changing where they go. More than seven in ten expats (71%) working in the Czech Republic rated Job Security favorably, compared to a global average of 59%. The French embassy in Prague and France’s government agency in support of employment have launched a campaign offering French people to seek jobs in the Czech Republic where hundreds of French firms operate. The campaign has been recently highlighted by the Le Parisien daily. The seminar is been organized on the outskirts of Paris and its main goal is convincing French unemployed to move to the Czech Republic. The joint campaign underlines growing desperation at President Macron’s failure to bring about a significant reduction in unemployment, which stands at 9.1 percent. Potential applicants can find information about the life and work in the Czech Republic on the websites of the embassy and the Work in Czechia campaign, which describe the beauties of the country and say that over 4,200 French have settled there so far. The Czech Republic ranks 26th in the world in a quality of life index highest quality of life, according to the latest release of the Social Progress Index (SPI). Of the new EU member states, only Slovenia finished higher, in 22nd place. According to the 2017 SPI only Norway offers its people a higher standard of living. Iceland has moved up one spot since the last ranking in 2016. The SPI ranks 146 countries worldwide, using 51 different metrics which measure different aspects of the quality of life of ordinary people. A better way to measure economic performance The Social Progress Index focuses on measures which measure the quality of life and permits us to see how well societies do at turning economic growth into positive social outcomes which matter to ordinary people. Research has also shown that countries that do well at turning growth into socially positive incomes perform better, economically, over the long term. Prague’s astronomical clock will go back into operation on September 28, St. Wenceslas’ Day. The clock at the city’s Old Town Hall has been undergoing repairs for nine months and will look a bit different: the color pattern on the disk behind the astrolabe has been restored to a previous pattern. The doors that the Apostles appear behind have also been changed to stained glass rather than wood. A stone statue of a lion, which was discovered underneath the calendar plate during the reconstruction process, will now be visible to onlookers as well. On the exterior, the sculptures that adorn the tower will once again represent the best and worst of human traits: pride, envy, and avarice paired with compassion, generosity and humility. At 8.00, 9.00 and 10.00 p.m. – a spectacular projection on the Old Town Tower will be offered to the participants. Prague City Transport (DPP) has announced that works are now being finalized to provide a section of the Prague underground network by LTE, reported Mobilenet.cz. Complete coverage of the whole metro, including tunnels, is planned by the end of 2019. This autumn, DPP will implement a Wi-Fi network in one of the busiest stations, too. The mobile signal coverage in the Prague metro is currently poor, at the 2G standard and only in the majority of metro stations. In April, DPP agreed with a consortium of operators to provide LTE reception. Construction works and cable installation will be performed in phases and during night hours when the metro is closed to the public (1:00 to 3:00 a.m.). The total distance between the four new stations where the cable will be installed in both directions is 11.6 km. The Czech economic growth had decelerated in the second quarter on a sequential basis. Both domestic and foreign demand continues to still drive the economic growth. The most significant contributors continued to be household consumption, which added 1.6 percentage points because of the solid labor market and fixed investment expenditures, impacted by economic recovery in the Eurozone and a lack of new available employees in the Czech economy, which is compelling companies to invest more into robotization and increased automation of plants. Meanwhile, the contribution of net exports was a bit negative in the second quarter, as high demand for Czech exports was outweighed by imports for consumption and investment purposes. GDP is expected to come in at 3.5 percent in 2018, according to an Erste Group Research in a report. “In 2019 and 2020, we expect GDP growth to arrive at 3.0% and 2.9%, respectively. Although the economic development of solid domestic as well as foreign demand should continue, GDP growth will gradually slow down” stated Erste Group Research. The Czech Republic held on Tuesday its largest ever anti-terrorist exercise in the Congress Centre, with the participation of police rapid reaction unit, firefighters and rescuers. The operation, entitled DEMON 2018, simulated 40 armed people taking around 2,000 audience members at a musical show hostage and killing five of them. The gunmen demanded their fellows be released from prison, otherwise they refuse to negotiate with the police. Czech rapid reaction unit launched a raid with the aim to set the hostages free around 10:00 in the morning, and helicopters circled around the building. The Congress Centre and its nearby surroundings were closed roughly until 13:00. The preparation of the training lasted for half a year. Interior Minister Jan Hamacek (CSSD) observed the drill, and the police borrowed a helicopter from the army for the purpose. Author: red
