One of the big summer food festivals has been postponed. The second edition of AsianFest was supposed to take place July 27–29, but will now take place May 3–5, 2019. “Given that AsianFest 2018 is one of the most demanding festivals in the Czech Republic, there have been unexpected complications that led to a change in the date. Tickets purchased for the original date automatically remains valid for a new date,” the organizers said in a statement. The location of the festival remains the same, at Branická louka in Prague 4. At 2.9 percent, the Czech unemployment rate is the lowest in 22 years, and in particular, graduates have never had it easier finding work. According to labor office statistics, there are currently ten vacancies per graduate, a state of affairs that is attracting young people from Greece, Italy or Spain to the Czech Republic. Unemployment varies widely by country in the EU, in many cases reflecting national differences in economic performance. In the first quarter of 2018, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, and Poland had the lowest unemployment rates. The highest unemployment rates were observed in Greece (20.1 percent in March 2018), Spain (15.8 percent), Italy (10.7 percent), France (9.2 percent) and Croatia (8.9 percent). Are you curious how a garden before 100 years looked like? Now you can explore a unique garden next to the National Museum of Agriculture (NZM) in Letna. In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary from the Declaration of Czechoslovakia, the National Museum of Agriculture prepared this unique exhibition which shows how gardens, flower beds, garden buildings and accessories looked like during the period of the Czechoslovak First Republic (1918-1938). “The garden and landscape architecture experienced an unprecedented boom in Czechoslovakia in the first half of the 20th century…, finally attaining the world level,” said Zdenek Novak, an expert in the history of garden and landscape art and the government coordinator of the Czechoslovak centenary celebrations. Visitors are also invited to the Museum’s rooftop where they can find other flower beds or a sun clock and enjoy marvelous views at Prague. The Czech Republic has stopped accepting visa application requests and requests for work permits from Vietnamese nationals until further notice, the Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday, citing the recent overburdening of the Czech embassy in Hanoi and also security risks. Interior Minister Jan Hamáček said “the measure has been taken as a result of the long-soaring number of these applications submitted to the Czech diplomatic mission in Hanoi, whose capacity has got overburdened, and also due to the risks that the National Security Council (BRS) discussed recently.” Hamáček added that the authorities would in future prioritize long-term residence applications made of the grounds of merging families. Lubomir Zaoralek, former foreign minister who currently heads the lower house foreign committee, said the main problem between Czechia and Germany is the unlawful production of pervitin (methamphetamine) and the Chinese or Vietnamese gangs which produce it. Rain has become rare due to global warming and climate change. Long periods of drought and no rain starts to have a negative effect on soil and harvest. The worst situation is in Zlín, Central Moravia, and eastern Bohemia. “Year 2018 is another of the dry years that we are experiencing regularly since 2012,” comments Pavel Zahradníček, a climatologist at the Institute for Global Change Research, Academy of Sciences. The worst of all was in 2015, especially during the months of July and August when more than four-fifths of the country was negatively impacted by the weather. “In recent years, drought has become a big problem, it’s not just a media bubble,” says Zahradníček. “And the prediction in the future clearly speaks that dry periods will grow and become more intense.” According to experts, the main reason is the increased air temperature, which causes more dry landscapes. Czechs are the second-heaviest drinkers, tied with France, in both the European Union and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), according to OECD health statistics released recently. Lithuania was first in both cases. But health officials warn that this achievement is a warning sign and that alcohol is a significant burden on the Czech healthcare system. Czechs drank 11.7 liters of alcohol, compared to Lithuania’s 13.2 liters. The analysis counted the amount of pure alcohol in spirits, wine, beer and other beverages with higher than 0.5 percent content consumed by people 15 years old and higher, using figures from 2016. Part of Alfons Mucha’s Slav Epic goes on display at Obecní dům from today July 19, 2018, to January 13, 2019. Due to size limitations, only the smaller ones will be shown. The remaining larger canvases are currently on display in Brno at the Brno Exhibition Center (BVV) until December 31, 2018. Mucha worked on the Slav Epic in 1910 – 1928. In 1913, Mucha already publicly announced that the work would be donated to the city of Prague, with the condition that the city place the paintings in a special pavilion built at its own expense. Mucha painted the cycle for almost 18 years starting in 1910. It is comprised of 20 large paintings inspired by Slav mythology and the Czech nation’s history. Until 2011, the paintings were on display at the Moravsky Krumlov Chateau, south Moravia. In 2010 they were entered in the list of national heritage. In September of 1928, Mucha gave his work to the mayor of the city of Prague, and the Epic was exhibited in the Veletržní palác on the occasion of the celebration of ten years of independence of the Czechoslovak state. The market organizing firm Taiko is offering a reward of Kč 10,000 for a tip leading to a suitable Christmas tree. On the night of November 27–28, the organizers will install it on Old Town Square. Proposals can be sent to this website until September 15th. The ideal tree can be found on private land or in public areas in all the Czech Republic, but the place must be easily accessible for heavy machinery. Taiko looks for trees that are in danger of being cut down in the near future. This way, the impact of cutting down the tree is minimal as it was already destined to come down. The Christmas market at Old Town Square starts relatively late this year, on December 1st, due to the late start of events, and runs until Jan. 6, which is Three Kings Day, when Christmas is celebrated on the Orthodox calendar. Two floors collapsed on Tuesday morning in a building under reconstruction in Mikulandska street in the city center of Prague, with several people being buried. Firefighters have freed three people, including one seriously injured, two in moderate conditions, but the numbers of those who may still be stuck under the ruins are not known yet. Prague police spokesman Jan Rybansky said another four workers might be under the debris, while rescuers spoke about another two. The cause of the accident will be investigated after the rescue operation. Firefighters built a provisional protection against another collapse. However, they say this risk still exists. Beer bikes are fun for tourists while it gives further complications to Prague citizens. Beer bikes can hold up to twelve people plus a bartender and a main driver (sober). The pedal bar has been a source of complaints for the past few months. Prague police officers have said that beer bikes have been increasingly affecting other people. They have uncovered a total of 11 violations of the city’s law injunctions on banned places. The operation of beer bikes has been a trend not just in Prague, but in another European metropolis too. In Amsterdam, for example, their operation was banned in November last year. The City Council has now figured out how to remove beer bikes in Prague completely. According to the Act on Road Traffic, beer bikes classify as non-motorized. According to Jan Wolf of City Council, “at the moment, one of the possible solutions seems to me to ban this mode of operation in places where there is a ban on alcohol consumption in public areas. Zurich is the most expensive in the world for food, according to UBS Group AG’s Prices and Earnings report for 2018, a survey ranking global city prices, earning levels, purchasing power and working time to buy common goods. Prague has been placed 50th in the annual index. Switzerland’s Zurich is followed by Geneva, Oslo, Copenhagen and New York, while Kiev, Lagos and Cairo are the cheapest cities. The report showed that the average worker in Zurich needed to work 38.2 hours to earn enough to purchase an Apple iPhone. An average worker in Johannesburg needed to work 291.9 hours to earn enough to buy the same smartphone. First launched in 1971 and now in its 17th edition, the report compares 128 prices of various goods and services of a three-person European family. The final calculations also take into account the average earnings of 15 professions representing the average working population.
