You are all invited to witness the Battle of Vítkov this Saturday 14 July, from 10 am to 8 pm on Prague 3’s Vítkov Hill. Over 100 performers, dressed in historical battle costumes, will remind audiences of the heroic defense of the Hussite garrison. The Hussites were a religious group, who fought for their religious and political beliefs. The group followed the teachings of Jan Hus, a Czech priest, who publicly preached his criticism of the Church for its nepotism, corruption, and violence. His attacks on the Church were received with hostility in Rome. He was arrested after a meeting with the Church Council of Constance, and sentenced to death as an incorrigible heretic. He died at the stake on July 6, 1415. His death today is commemorated as a national holiday. A realistic reconstruction of the famous battle is an annual event honoring the Battle of Vítkov Hill, the most famous battle of the Hussite Wars. On July 14, 1420, a handful of Hussites led by the general Jan Žižka from Trocnov, defeated the Austrian and Merssen Crusaders. Armin N., one of a group of Dutchmen who assaulted a waiter in Prague in April, expressed his apologies to both the waiter and the Netherlands in a letter. He wants to financially support the waiter until he is back on his feet, N. said to newspaper AD from his cell in Prague. N. was one of seven Dutch arrested for assaulting the waiter on April 23rd. Two, including a police officer from Amsterdam, were released a short time later. Three others were given conditional prison sentences and banned from entering the Czech Republic for five years. N. and his brother Arash are still in custody in the Czech Republic. The waiter, named only as Mirek, suffered a broken jaw, severe concussion and a damaged eye socket in the beating. The owner of Polpo, the restaurant where he worked, said he would be unable to return to work for several months. “I can’t deny it. I’m sorry and deeply ashamed, and I have apologized in a letter to the victim,” he told AD. “When I heard he had a child, it broke my heart. The Technical Administration of Communications began to place signs prohibiting cyclists in selected pedestrian zones, and its prohibition will last until the end of the month. Prague police officers were mainly stationed in the historical center during the last prolonged weekend. Drunken visitors on the beer bike were fined due to violating the ban on drinking alcohol at selected locations. There was a total of 11 misdemeanors within three days. “On-site patrols imposed block fines totaling CZK 3,400,” Irena Seifertova, spokesman for the city police said. Prague prohibits alcohol consumption in some streets, including the vicinity of schools, parks, state institutions and public stops. Tourists complained to the police officers that no one had told them about the rules and violations. The beer bike company, however, refuted the tourists’ statement. “We respect all decrees and regulations. Our bartender informed the clients while driving and pointed them to places where alcohol is not allowed,” said Viktor Hübner, Prague-beer-bike executive, whose clients also received the fine. He added that in some places, conflicting situations might arise. In the future, the city police are planning additional random checks to beer-bike customers. In selected pedestrian zones, the road office will start installing signs where biking is banned between 10:00 and 17:00 in the upcoming days. This will mostly be in place in areas around Wenceslas Square, Náměstí Republiky, and Old Town Square. Auto*Mat, an association that oversees policies and efficient use of public money, already said that the banning placements will begin on Tuesday. This data, however, has not been confirmed by the City Hall. Individuals, associations, companies, and other city institutions are also fighting against this decision to limit biking in town. According to the City Hall, the Court still has to decide on the proposal for the complete abolition of the biking restrictions. However, the verdict does not necessarily have to wait, as the dismissal of the precautionary measure is sufficient enough. Even though the restrictions were mainly directed against the so-called motor scooters in the center of the metropolis, the ban measure still explicitly noted the danger of cyclists to pedestrians. The night from Sunday to Monday in the Czech Republic was unusually cool with temperatures ranging around five degrees Celsius, said Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) on Monday. Seven stations reported July 2 as the coldest night of the entire month of July for the country. The average temperature in the Czech Republic at night dropped to 4.8 degrees Celsius, with no significant differences among the regions. The cold front came from the north to the Czech Republic over the last weekend. The lowest temperature measured at two meters above ground Sunday night was at Jeleni stations in the Ore Mountains range, wherein the thermometer showed minus 5.7 degrees Celsius. Prague will host the 8th edition of the CEE Cup from July 25 to July 31. This is a prestigious tournament for young players coming from different football clubs all over the world. Leaders of France, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia have met in Paris to commemorate the centenary of the creation of the Czechoslovakia military, which prompted the country’s independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On June 30, 1918, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire was collapsing, France became the first country to formally recognize Czechoslovakia’s new government, paving the way to the country’s proclamation of independence later that year. The country peacefully separated into two independent Republics in 1993 after the fall of communism in Europe. In a joint declaration with Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini and Czech counterpart Andrej Babiš Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron called on Europe to find a way back to “unity” despite the migrant crisis. Prague has taken a significant step in building its smart city infrastructure with the installation of air quality sensors which gather real-time data through its ICE Gateway network. They are being provided by Finnish company Vaisala, which develops and manufactures a range of products for environmental and industrial measurement. The CO2 sensors will help the city to understand the local air quality conditions and to target actions in order to improve air quality. The sensors will be installed on the smart streetlights which are also used for traffic monitoring, security and other applications. Czech President Miloš Zeman formally appointed Andrej Babiš as the country’s prime minister Wednesday, ending eight months of political deadlock since the billionaire businessman’s center-right ANO party won parliamentary elections. However, with just 93 of 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the minority government will have to count on the support of a communist party that has remained only in the shadows of national politics since their rule ended with the Velvet Revolution in 1989. The centrist ANO (YES) movement led by Babiš won the election in October, but his minority government lost a confidence vote in January and had to resign. Other parties in Parliament have been reluctant to enter a coalition with ANO because of fraud charges Babiš faces. His new government is a coalition with the Social Democrats that would have support from the far-left Communists in the mandatory confidence vote expected on July 11. Both Zeman and Babiš are strong critics of the European Union’s migrant quota directive, with Babiš insisting that the EU should tackle migration by reinforcing its external borders and offering more aid to countries in the Middle East and Africa — where most of the refugees originate.
