Beer drinkers could be forced to swallow even higher prices next year as the brewing industry is rocked by the soaring costs of ingredients, according to Plzen Prazdroj spokeswoman Jitka Nemečková. The Bernard family beer company and the Primator brewery in Náchod have also announced price hikes in the coming weeks and the famous Budvar brewery has indicated a likely price increase as of next year. The price of hops and other ingredients have risen sharply after the summer heatwave scorched harvests across Europe, but other costs, such as energy, are also rising. The report from analysts at the investment bank Berenberg predicts the world’s biggest brewers, such as Heinken and Carlsberg, are facing a rise in production costs of around 16% going into 2019. Last year, retail sales for beer in the Czech Republic reached Kč 16.4 billion from June 2016 to May 2017. Year-on-year, it was a one-percent increase, daily Hospodářské noviny (HN) reported. On an international basis, the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita, and has held that position for 24 years, as long as the independent Czech Republic has existed: Czechs annually drink on average 143.3 liters of beer per person. The event commemorates one of the turning points in the history of the Czech lands. Hundreds of soldiers, archers, cannoneers and horse riders from all over Europe will all meet in Prague to take place in the largest re-enactment of a battle from the Thirty Years’ War. It should resemble the original battle and it is one of the largest events of this kind in Europe. Although the Battle of White Mountain, which took place on November 8th, 1620, lasted only two hours, it had far-reaching consequences for the Czech lands. It was the beginning of the Thirty Years War and influenced the fate of Central Europe for the next 300 years. At the venue, you will find out a market with traditional handicrafts. An accompanying programme will start at 12.00 p.m. featuring fencing, training of units, juggling, music performances and more. After Luxembourg, Hungary and the Czech Republic are the EU member countries that invest the most public resources on transport in the European Union. According to Eurostat data released today, the highest percentage of government expenditure on transport in 2016 was registered in Luxembourg (3.7 % of the GDP), followed by Hungary and the Czech Republic (both 3.5 %), very much above the EU average of 1.9% of GDP. High percentages of public expenditure in transport was recorded also in Slovakia (3.4% of GDP), Romania (3.1), Austria (2.9), Poland (2.8), Greece (2.7), Estonia (2.6) and Croatia and Latvia (both 2.4). Government expenditure on transport includes expenditure on administration, regulation, construction and maintenance of the transport infrastructure, plus the operation of public transport corporations classified with the general government sector and subsidies and investments in the market producers to operate public transport, Eurostat illustrated. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has resolutely stated that Europe must fight for its culture and values amidst the destructive EU migration policy. Pointing out the recent riots in Germany are due to uncontrolled migration, leading to explosive situations. “Chemnitz is just right around the corner!” he said Sunday, describing the disorder that inundated the eastern German city after standoffs between pro and anti-migrant rallies there last week. “I’ve been thoroughly explaining that this is a fight to preserve our European civilization and culture. We don’t want to live in Africa or the Middle East here. We must fight for our values.” “Have you seen the pictures of migrant ships heading for tourist beaches? Europeans are shocked and frightened. The same thing happened in Chemnitz. There was not only a murder committed but also the murders of teenage girls and sexual assaults,” Babiš explained. The Birell Prague Grand Prix is a charming evening race with a mysterious atmosphere in the historical Prague city center. During the first weekend of September Prague, streets are full of thousands of runners and spectators alongside the race course. The first race is a ladies only affair. The Adidas Women’s Race 5 km starts on Republic Square and continues over the bridge to the other side of the river. When the sun sets, the next race starts. The Birell 10 km Race is open to all runners, both men, and women. The Birell Prague Grand Prix will be broadcast live on ČT Sport as well as online on RunCzech.com. The course is renowned for its speed: last year five men managed to complete the race in incredible times all under 28 minutes. The 10K run is a long-distance road running competition over a distance of ten kilometers. The Roads and Motorways Directorate and the Railway Infrastructure Administration have received orders from the minister of transport, ANO appointee Dan Ťok, to inspect bridges built from the 1960s to the 1980s in the Czech Republic. Concerns have been sparked by the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in the Italian city of Genoa, which was constructed in the mid-1960s. Of the 1,000 or so Czech bridges due for inspection around 600 are road bridges and the remainder carry trains. The minister has also called on the country’s regional authorities, which are responsible for second and third-class roads, to send out inspectors. Six of country’s first class road bridges have already been found to be in a calamitous state. They have been closed and await repair or demolition. Over 350 railway bridges have been repaired but none are judged to be in a calamitous state. The state has earmarked CZK 1.5 billion for the modernization of bridges this year. Author: red

But it sounds like Marvel Studios is getting ready to take the production elsewhere in Europe. Sony’s next Spider-Man film will shoot in Prague and Liberec later this month. Almost 70 men, women, and children have taken part in an extraordinary “wild swim” down the River Elbe in Kolin, 80 km from Prague, in an initiative sparked by a UK Channel swimmer, and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. The Hana Greenfield Memorial Swim was held to commemorate the life and times of one of the few survivors of the Nazi deportation of the 500 Jews of Kolin. Greenfield swam regularly in the Elbe in the 1930s before being deported to Terezin and then to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. After liberation, she moved to Britain then Israel, becoming a noted author, journalist, and educator. She helped to keep the memory of Kolin’s Jews alive, instituting an annual prize for school students to write about the town’s Jewish heritage. It took place on Sunday, August 26. The date coincided with the birthdate of legendary Kolin rabbi Dr Richard Feder, who conducted Christian as well as Jewish funerals in Terezin, where he was interned for most of the war. They included Hana’s family, people from the Jewish communities in Prague, the UK and Germany and non-Jewish swimmers from the UK and other countries in Europe. United continues to step up its international game, today announcing nonstop seasonal service to two new destinations: Naples (Italy) and Prague, with both flights departing from New York-Newark. Many money transfers from one bank to another often aren’t accomplished on the same day, and Czech banking law allows them to happen on the following business day. But banks have been starting to change that. Some Czech banks have been voluntarily starting to speed up the process to allow transfers posted in the morning to be completed in the afternoon, without the client having to pay a priority or premium fee. Prague is definitely shutting down the scandal-plagued Opencard. Passengers using the red card will lose the opportunity to record coupons for public transport from November. The alternative transit card Lítačka card was launched in March 2016, and both systems have been running side by side. Lítačka will expand with a new website and a new app as Opencard shuts down. People who have bought a transit coupon on Opencard can continue to use it until the coupon expires. As of Sept. 1, anybody using an Opencard can transfer to Lítačka free of charge. Some 240,000 Opencards are still in use, according to City Hall. Lítačka is used by about a half million people. Prague has a population of 1.26 million, counting children who ride for free. Thirteen Italian winemakers will be on hand to open the inaugural outing of this festival, sure to be on of the Czech capital’s most scenic. During the feast, you can pair it with prosciutto, melons, cheese, olives and Italian gelato. Prosecco is made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties may be included. The following varieties are traditionally used with Glera up to a maximum of 15% of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The name is derived from that of the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated.
