More than 1000 firemen from all of the Czech and Moravian districts will commemorate the 100th anniversary from the foundation of Czechoslovakia in a really special way. They are going to create the biggest fireman fountain in the world, inspired by the motifs of the Bedřich Smetana’s symphonic poem called Vltava. The firefighters will use approximately 200 hose nozzles above the river in the center of Prague, between Jirasek and Palacky bridges. The event is scheduled to take place at 22:00. “The 10 Babies,” created by artist David Černý are in Palm Springs for a temporary exhibit. They will be on loan to the Palm Springs developer for 20 months and will be unveiled to the public on June 5, the same day as the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce luncheon, during which Michael Braun, president of Grit Deveessman of the year. Braun paid for the “Babies” to be shipped from Europe and then trucked in from the Los Angeles port. He added some people hate the “Babies” and some like them, but he hopes that will create a conversation. “He took the face away and put this stamp of a barcode… instead of what defines their individuality and their humanity. Especially with the way the world has become more digitized… we as a person really no longer count, only as a number, a unit, whether it’s a working unit, or a consumption unit. The Elbee is a weird vehicle. It opens from the front, and you don’t climb in, but ride straight into it with a wheelchair. The small car is one of the first vehicles made solely for disabled drivers. The car is the brainchild of Czech businessman Ladislav Brázdil. When he began his manufacturing company, Brázdil decided to follow his dream of creating his own product: an urban micro-car designed specifically for drivers in a wheelchair. “This was it,” says Brázdil. “It was something unique that we as an engineering business could produce.” The first model went to market at the end of 2014 and the historic first customer was František Trunda, who had lost both legs below the hips. For him, the car has provided a renewed sense of freedom. “It has changed my life,” he says. “I can now go for a drive out of town or go to see my brother. I don’t have to wait until someone has time to go with me.” This direct driver access to the vehicle was a fundamental principle of the whole project. Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová rejoiced Thursday after a man who allegedly attacked her with a knife in 2016 was taken into custody but her spokesman said the case was not yet over. Zuzana Buresova, a spokesperson for the county court in the city of Prostějov. Buresova declined to give any further details. The public Czech Television said the man was a 54-year-old drug addict, adding Kvitová had identified him as the attacker before traveling to Paris to play at the French Open starting on Sunday. After the attack in her home in Prostějov in December 2016, Kvitová had surgery on injuries to her playing left hand. It took her more than five months to recover. Despite grim forecasts by doctors, who even warned she might lose her fingers, the 2011 and 2014 Wimbledon champion returned to the sport in time for the 2017 French Open. Kvitova sank from 11th in the world when the crime occurred to 29th at the turn of 2017 and 2018, but she has since climbed back into the top ten, also owing to back-to-back wins at Prague and Madrid at the turn of April and May. One of the hidden gems of Prague are its courtyards, which one does not almost notice while admiring the beautiful historical facades. This event offers you a unique option to visit places which are usually not publicly accessible. The event takes place this weekend (May 26 and 27) and will unlock gates to about 13 courtyards at Lesser Town and you can enjoy here installations by fine artists, public readings and concerts. The organizers recommend participants to go first to Malostranské náměstí (opposite the tram stop) and buy a brochure. It includes a map of the sites and a historical summary of the selected yards, as well as a complete list of all planned events. The price of the brochure is 50 CZK. The Czech Republic’s Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Jaroslava Němcová, stated that the ministry is planning to significantly accelerate the employment of Ukrainians through a special program. According to Němcová, the number of job vacancies in the Czech Republic has reached a record high at over 260,000. The jobs on this list include positions for nurses, social workers, technical workers and construction workers. The Minister visited the Czech Embassy in Ukraine and the Consulate General in Lviv in order to simplify and accelerate the procedure to obtain a work permit for Ukrainians. The plan is to increase the number of workers from Ukraine with the right to two years of employment. The goal is to employ 19,600 people using this route. “Now 374,000 foreigners are working in the Czech Republic, and 280,000 of them are EU citizens, and 94,000 are citizens from other European countries and Asia,” the news outlet reports. “70,000 of these people are Ukrainians.” Author: red
Rock for People, one of the biggest and oldest open-air music festivals in the Czech Republic, will take place July 4–6 at the disused airport in Hradec Králové. This year will feature scores of bands from the Czech Republic and abroad to celebrate the summer. Headliners include electronic band the Prodigy, British indie rock bands the Kooks and the Vaccines, American rockers Skillet, Danish heavy metal star Volbeat, uninhibited Enter Shikari, German punk act Beatsteaks and the hero of the music documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez. Located in the heart of Karlin, it’s hard to believe Kasárna Karlín hasn’t been around forever. This multi-purpose cultural center opened in June 2017 in the courtyard of an abandoned army barracks. It boasts an outdoor cinema, bar, cafe, gallery, sculpture garden, and most recently, the 4+4 festival’s artistic squatting art exhibit. Kasárna Karlín is now preparing a new season of events for the warm-weather months of 2018 and will kick things off this week with its first open-air cinema screening. On Saturday, it will screen the seminal San Francisco cop classic Dirty Harry starring Clint Eastwood. The movie will be shown in English with Czech subtitles. The screening will commence at 22:00 and the entrance is 80 CZK. Further screenings and events have yet to be announced but you can keep yourself updated following the Kasárna Karlín Facebook page Trying to create a new public space, Kasárna Karlín is operated by a group of artists. For the seventh year in a row, Českomoravský Svaz Minipivovarů will be hosting ‘Festival minipivovarů na Pražském hradě’- a mini-brewery festival at the Prague Castle. On June 15 and 16, at Royal Gardens, the best of Czech microbreweries will gather to share their fine beer with the public. Tickets cost 475 CZK, and includes a tasting glass and an extensive catalog with a variety of information about the participating microbreweries and the beer specials being offered. The list of participating breweries includes- Pivovar Antoš, Pivovar Bašta, Pivovar Matuška, Kocour, Pivovarský Dvůr Zvíkov, just to name a few. Microbreweries are the waters of life and a modern phenomenon of brewing skills. Goalkeeper Petr Čech, 36, won the Golden Ball award for the best Czech footballer of the season for the 12th time, the poll organizers announced on Tuesday. This is the third time in a row for Čech, who plays for English Premier League giants Arsenal, to win this award. Last season the Arsenal man became the first goalkeeper in the English Premier League to achieve 200 clean sheets. Though now retired from the international game, he is the most capped Czech ever with 124 appearances. Čech, former captain of the Czech Republic national team, won 919 points in the 22nd Golden Ball sport journalists’ poll.
