A photo of an old Russian missile in a server room just caused a massive Reddit freak out. Redditor WhySoSadCZ posted a photo of “some kind of explosive lying on the floor” on Monday in the subreddit r/WhatisThisThing. They claimed that they were working on the air conditioning for a small office building in the Czech Republic when they found a whole missile in the office’s server room. They claimed that the server room was untouched for two months and that they had to break in to fix the AC. In the final update, they say that they got their phone back after going through a police investigation. The Redditor claims that the local bomb squad wasn’t authorized to work with the missile, so it was taken to a “nearby military area” where it would be detonated. u/WhySoSadCZ said they didn’t have any information about how the missile ended up in a locked server room for two months, but that “there is a strict embargo about it.” The local news in the Czech Republic even covered the story — and said it was fake. An Instagram account is taking movie scenes filmed in Prague and re-creating them in a quirky way. The Filmed in Prague feed shows snapshots from film scenes held in front of the actual Czech Republic buildings and landmarks featured in them. The account features images from movies including “Amadeus” (1984), “Mission: Impossible” (1996), “EuroTrip” (2004), “Van Helsing” (2004) and “The Illusionist” (2006). The account is run by Musa Bektaş, who is currently interning in Prague. He said he was inspired to do this project after realizing how many movies were shot in the city. The Museum station on the Metro A line in now open in both directions. The platform had been closed in the direction of Nemocnice Motol since Jan. 3, 2018. In the last half of 2017, the opposite platform in the direction of Depo Hostivař was closed. People can now transfer to the Metro C line without having to backtrack from Můstek. The exact reopening date was not announced until May 18, after a final inspection was made. During the closure, tiles on the walls were replaced and adjustments were made to the lighting. Some work, though, will still be done over the summer and this will require the whole station to be closed on two occasions, the weekends of June 23–24 and again on July 22–23. The Czech supreme court has ruled that two gay partners should be legally recognized as the fathers of a surrogate child. The child was born a few months ago to a surrogate mother in California through artificial insemination. The California authorities subsequently recognized both Czechs as the newborn’s parents. The judges ruled that the biological link between a parent and a child should not be the only determining element, maintaining parental responsibility may have a greater role in the recognition of the parenthood legal status. It is the first time that, in the history of Czech law, a court recognizes two fathers and the necessity of safeguarding the needs of the child. A ruling recognizing parenthood of both men was brought by the Supreme Court on May 2. With the verdict, the lawyer turned to the Czech authorities to issue the birth certificate. Roughly three-quarters of Czechs agree with the possibility to conclude marriage irrespective of sexual orientation and three-fifths are for the gay and lesbian couples adopting children from institutes, according to a poll conducted by the Median agency. Meanwhile, 61 percent believe same-sex couples should be able to adopt children, where just two years ago respondents had been evenly split.
The Zeppelin NT, the biggest helium-filled airship in the world, manufactured since the 1990s in Friedrichshafen, Germany will make a landing on Prague’s Letnany Airfield around 3 pm on Friday. It should remain in the Czech Republic for about a week and fans will be able to admire it on several PR flights around the country. Zeppelin NT is used for tours, as observation platforms for photographers and television commentators covering major events, for research missions for environmental observations, troposphere research and natural resources prospecting. The Zeppelin NT is a 75.1 m (246 ft) semi-rigid airship inflated with helium. NT stands for Neue Technologie, or “New Technology” in English. The State Veterinary Administration, alongside Police, found beef, pork, poultry, and fish, of an unidentified origin on Thursday. The meat and fish were found in a warehouse in the Sapa market, known as the Vietnamese neighborhood of Prague. The offenders are facing heavy fines of up to 10 million CZK, and the inspectors have ordered for the disposal of all products found. One storage area has been closed. The police ordered the elimination of 200 kg of mung bean sprouts, 48 kg of shells and seafood, fish and fish broth, 75 duck and quail eggs. In most cases, food was unmarked, with an unknown origin, or with damaged packaging. In some storage areas, police control has discovered rodent excrement. Last year, health and safety inspections were brought back to the market in Libuše, due to concerns. Of the 15 inspections conducted, 13 of them found defects. To address the health violations, a fine of 400,000 CZK was proposed, which is twenty times higher than the fine from the year before. The tunnel on the proposed high-speed railway between Prague and Dresden is set to be designed by the German passenger rail company Deutsche Bahn and could shorten the travel time to one hour as well as reduce heavy traffic through the Elbe valley. The Erzgebirge-Krušné Hory base tunnel, 15.10 km long on the German side and 11.43 km on the Czech side, was one of a number of detailed recommendations outlined by Saxony’s State Transport Minister, Mr. Martin Dulig, as he unveiled the findings of the Dresden-Prague Corridor Feasibility Study. The project envisages the construction of a new railway line between Dresden and Prague via Ústí nad Labem that would include a 26-km-long cross-border tunnel. On Czech territory, the route would run along the existing motorway. Passenger trains would use the new line, thus easing capacity of the existing line for cargo trains. Freight trains will continue to use the existing double-track lines, increasing capacity for freight as passenger trains are moved across. This will concurrently have the effect of reducing travel times for passengers, with journey times between Dresden and Prague set to fall from 2 hrs 15 mins to just 52 mins. The Open House Praha festival this year will see 65 buildings open to the public on May 19 and 20. The buildings include new examples of modern office architecture, 20th-century landmarks and historical palaces. Twenty-four buildings are new to the program this year. Some will only have guided tours while others will allow for free exploring. Some will also only be open for limited hours or only one of the two days, so it best to check online in advance. Online registration is required for a tour of the technological facilities in the Main Point Karlín building, which is only allowed to visitors over 15 years of age. Jaromir Jagr will play his 30th season of professional hockey in the 2018-19 campaign for the Czech Republic’s Kladno Knights, he confirmed to the team’s website Tuesday according to Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.com. Jagr currently serves as both the co-owner and team president for the Knights, who play in the WSM Liga. Jagr played 24 seasons in the NHL and is second all-time to Wayne Gretzky in career points (1,921) and third overall in goals (766). He played six more pro seasons overseas, in the Czech Republic and the Russian Kontinental Hockey League. There were reports in the Czech media that a German team was pursuing Jagr. Jagr hasn’t ruled out the chance to someday return to the NHL. “I would be happier if I was in the NHL now, but as a second option, this is the place I want to be,” he told The New York Times in April. Czech Airlines will resume flights to Armenia from June 8. Yerevan-Prague flight will take place twice a week with Airbus A319 planes, ATO.RU website reported. The airline said the absence of flights for 4 years was due to a fall in the foreign currency, which led to a decline in the demand for flights to the Czech Republic. “Last year the markets of Eastern European and South Caucasian countries stabilized and in some sense returned to the situation existing before the crisis, leading to increase in the demand of flights. Vyšehrad will host the 12th edition of Prague Food Festival on May 25 to 27. This annual outdoor food festival promotes quality gastronomy and the best local ingredients. The festival features not only the country’s finest restaurants and chefs but also non-industrial food and beverage manufacturers and importers, farms and family businesses. Each restaurant offers appetizers, soups, main courses, desserts and a specially-curated festival menu, highlighted by test-taste booths with coffee, chocolate, wines, beer and other delectable items. The festival has its own currency, the Grand, which can be used to buy food and beverages. The idea for the first public refrigerator in Prague came to Pavel Vodička, who placed it near coffee shop Na půl cesty in Prague’s Pankrác district. Prague’s public refrigerator will host food that may be taken by anyone: the homeless, students who wanted to eat after a party, or those who have forgotten to buy food. Samsung has now installed a public fridge at the Kotlaska community center and garden in Prague 8. People can leave products that they do not use. For example, before going on a vacation or after the holidays, or just when there is extra food left. If someone wants to help they can also participate in filling the refrigerator with food. Food left in the refrigerator should not be opened, soiled or defaced, however, expired food may be left. You can donate originally labeled foods before the date of consumption, yogurt, milk and cheese, fruit juices, fresh eggs and canned food. This concept is called “food sharing,” and similar projects have long been gaining popularity in the US and Europe. In Germany, the first public refrigerator was set up in Munster and soon after in other German and Austrian cities.
