The second total lunar eclipse of 2018 will be visible in large parts of Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. Totality will last for 103 minutes, making it the longest eclipse of the 21st century. The eclipse will start at 20:24 Prague time, but over the territory of the Czech Republic, the Moon will appear only by 20:47. What is the Blood Moon of July 27? Unlike with solar eclipses, you need no special equipment to observe lunar eclipses. These latter events, which occur when the moon passes into Earth’s shadow, are safe to view directly with the naked eye, telescopes or binoculars. The moon turns deep red or reddish brown during eclipses, instead of going completely dark. That’s because some of the sunlight going through Earth’s atmosphere is bent around the edge of our planet and falls onto the moon’s surface. In selected pedestrian zones, the road office will start installing signs where biking is banned between 10:00 and 17:00 in the upcoming days. This will mostly be in place in areas around Wenceslas Square, Náměstí Republiky, and Old Town Square. Auto*Mat, an association that oversees policies and efficient use of public money, already said that the banning placements will begin on Tuesday. This data, however, has not been confirmed by the City Hall. Individuals, associations, companies, and other city institutions are also fighting against this decision to limit biking in town. According to the City Hall, the Court still has to decide on the proposal for the complete abolition of the biking restrictions. However, the verdict does not necessarily have to wait, as the dismissal of the precautionary measure is sufficient enough. Even though the restrictions were mainly directed against the so-called motor scooters in the center of the metropolis, the ban measure still explicitly noted the danger of cyclists to pedestrians. The night from Sunday to Monday in the Czech Republic was unusually cool with temperatures ranging around five degrees Celsius, said Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) on Monday. Seven stations reported July 2 as the coldest night of the entire month of July for the country. The average temperature in the Czech Republic at night dropped to 4.8 degrees Celsius, with no significant differences among the regions. The cold front came from the north to the Czech Republic over the last weekend. The lowest temperature measured at two meters above ground Sunday night was at Jeleni stations in the Ore Mountains range, wherein the thermometer showed minus 5.7 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature in the Czech mainland was measured by meteorologists at Luční bouda station in the Giant Mountains, where was minus 8.1 degrees. Author: red
Prague will host the 8th edition of the CEE Cup from July 25 to July 31. This is a prestigious tournament for young players coming from different football clubs all over the world. Everton (England), Beşiktaş (Turkey), Palmeiras (Brazil), Sarajevo (Bosnia), Nitra (Slovakia), and the traditional Prague clubs, Sparta and Slavia will all come together to start the season in the Czech Republic. Leaders of France, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia have met in Paris to commemorate the centenary of the creation of the Czechoslovakia military, which prompted the country’s independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On June 30, 1918, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire was collapsing, France became the first country to formally recognize Czechoslovakia’s new government, paving the way to the country’s proclamation of independence later that year. The country peacefully separated into two independent Republics in 1993 after the fall of communism in Europe. In a joint declaration with Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini and Czech counterpart Andrej Babiš Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron called on Europe to find a way back to “unity” despite the migrant crisis. After the meeting, they signed framework agreements on strategic partnership outlining future cooperation in security, the fight against terrorism, research and development and student exchanges. Prague has taken a significant step in building its smart city infrastructure with the installation of air quality sensors which gather real-time data through its ICE Gateway network. They are being provided by Finnish company Vaisala, which develops and manufactures a range of products for environmental and industrial measurement. The CO2 sensors will help the city to understand the local air quality conditions and to target actions in order to improve air quality. The sensors will be installed on the smart streetlights which are also used for traffic monitoring, security and other applications. ICE Gateway, based in Berlin, enables cities to provide smart solutions by upgrading their existing infrastructure and adding new functions and services that improve the life of their citizens. “Vaisala’s high-quality sensors, as well as their worldwide leading position and expertise in weather sensors, is a perfect match to our highly secure smart city plug-and-play solution,” said says Ramin L. Czech President Miloš Zeman formally appointed Andrej Babiš as the country’s prime minister Wednesday, ending eight months of political deadlock since the billionaire businessman’s center-right ANO party won parliamentary elections. However, with just 93 of 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the minority government will have to count on the support of a communist party that has remained only in the shadows of national politics since their rule ended with the Velvet Revolution in 1989. The centrist ANO (YES) movement led by Babiš won the election in October, but his minority government lost a confidence vote in January and had to resign. Other parties in Parliament have been reluctant to enter a coalition with ANO because of fraud charges Babiš faces. His new government is a coalition with the Social Democrats that would have support from the far-left Communists in the mandatory confidence vote expected on July 11. Both Zeman and Babiš are strong critics of the European Union’s migrant quota directive, with Babiš insisting that the EU should tackle migration by reinforcing its external borders and offering more aid to countries in the Middle East and Africa — where most of the refugees originate. On Tuesday, June 26, the Czech government approved the amendments to the law on railway transport, which allow the use of trains without drivers. The construction of a new fourth metro line in Prague, which will be marked by “D” letter and blue color, will begin by the section from Pankrác to the Olbrachtova station and it should cost 39.7 billion crowns. The first section will also test the operation in automatic mode – without drivers, which will speed up the putting line D to operation. Construction will be preceded by an archaeological survey which is set to begin this summer and is expected to take about a year. Construction works on the line will be launched at Pankrác station, outside the Arkády shopping mall. This is where the tunnel boring machines will be brought under the ground. Construction of the Metro’s D route was originally supposed to start in 2010, but it was postponed due to various reasons, including problems with acquiring all of the land. According to previously released plans, it should be completed by the year 2022 or 2023. The completion of the metro D construction will also mean a significant improvement of the environment. The amount of pollutants is expected to decrease by almost 60 tons per year. At the same time, the number of cars heading to the center will fall by more than 18 million a year. Author: red
A recent report by Arthur D. Little found cities still need to work intensively on improvements to their mobility systems. The report assessed the mobility maturity, innovativeness, and performances of 100 cities worldwide through 27 criteria. The global average score of the 100 cities surveyed is 42.3 out of a possible 100 points. This means that, worldwide, the average city has unleashed less than half of the potential of its urban mobility system, a state of affairs that could be remedied by applying best practices across all its operations. Only 10 cities scored more than 50 points, of which eight are European cities and two Asian. The city-state of Singapore achieved the highest score with 59.3 points, followed by Stockholm (57.1 points), Amsterdam (56.7 points), Copenhagen (54.6 points) and Hong Kong (54.2 points). Labyrinths cut out in large maize fields have become a new tourist attraction, mainly for families with children, in the Czech Republic. They were opened by the Fit-Jump company, that now operates 25 maize mazes in the country. The aim of the project is to make children move. Besides, this is an interesting opportunity for farmers to use maize fields before the harvest. The maze operators address families with children, schools, and kindergartens as well as companies that may use the maize labyrinths during team building events. “Out of the original 30 mazes, we have 25 left and this week we will close another in the South Moravia Region,” firm executive Radek Skacel said. The most popular maize labyrinths are in Hradec Králové, Opava, and Pisek. Those in big cities, such as Brno and mainly the capital of Prague, paradoxically attract fewer people. Author: red
The legislation was drawn up by a group of 46 mostly leftist and centrist members of parliament from six of the nine parties in the lower house, including the populist ANO party of billionaire Prime Minister Andrej Babis. However, at the same time, 37 lawmakers introduced a rival bill calling on marriage to be constitutionally defined as between one man and one woman. Thankfully, as it’s calling for a constitutional change it’s far less likely to succeed than the bill calling for same-sex marriages to be legalized. In the Czech political system, a constitutional change requires 60% of the Czech parliament to vote in favor. Meanwhile, a bill that is only seeking to change the law just requires a normal majority vote. In a poll conducted in May, 50 percent of respondents supported gay marriage. Seventy-four percent approved of the existing registered partnership option. Babis’s centrist ANO party won that vote by a large margin and formed a minority government, but he failed to secure parliamentary support. The United Islands of Prague festival offers more than just music. The festival does present both local and international acts in a wide range of genres so people can discover new sounds, but there is also a large side program. Entry to the festival including the side events is free. The 15th edition of the festival will take place June 22 and 23 in Prague’s Karlín district.
