The National Theatre in Prague celebrated the 150th anniversary of the laying of its foundation stone with a performance of folklore groups and the teaching of the old Bohemian polka dance by ballet soloists, who re-enacted the historical events on Saturday. The laying of the foundation stone for the building of the NG in 1868 became one of the biggest events of the Czech national revival in the 19th century. At that time, it lasted three days and was visited by the estimated 150,000 people. The idea of building a stately edifice to serve as a theatre was first mooted in the autumn of 1844 at meetings of patriots in Prague. It began to materialize through a request for “the privilege of constructing, furnishing, maintaining and managing” an independent Czech theatre, which was submitted to the Provincial Committee of the Czech Assembly by František Palacký on 29 January 1845. Outdoor fires are once again allowed in Prague, so people can now do outdoor grilling in accordance with the standard fire and safety laws. Many parks, urban forests and recreation areas have designated places for grilling or open fires. But these are subject to oversight by the city and the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ). The city had placed a temporary ban on outdoor fires April 29, due to a warning from the ČHMÚ about dry, windy and hot conditions causing an increased risk of fires getting out of control. Mikolas Josef this year not only added another qualification to the list but also the best Czech result so far – 6th place with 281 points. In 2016 Gabriela Gunčíková ended 25th with 41 points. Josef, who performed the song Lie to Me, was only the second Czech singer to reach the final of the Eurovision and achieved the highest ever placing for a Czech artist. For the 60th anniversary in 2015, Česká Televize announced their comeback to the Eurovision Song Contest, which was very happily received by the Czech Eurovision fans. The entry was chosen completely internally, both the artist and the song. It was a duo Marta Jandová & Václav Noid Bárta with a dramatic duet called Hope Never Dies. In the end, the duo took 13th place in the second semifinal with 33 points and even though they did not qualify, it was the country’s best result at the time. On 18 May, NEINVER, a Spanish company specialized in investment, development, and management of property assets will open Prague The Style Outlets, the Czech Republic’s largest outlet centre. It’s located in Tuchoměřice and it will be serviced by new public transport stops on the 312 and 322 bus lines. The new outlet will offer a unique shopping destination to the more than 7 million tourists who visit Prague each year, with around 20,000 m² of GLA devoted to top domestic and international brands at reduced prices. Among the first retailers opening next week will be Adidas, Benetton, Bogner, Frankie Morello, Gattinoni, Geox, Karl Lagerfeld, Marina Militare, Nike, Palmers, Pepe Jeans, Trussardi and Versace Jeans. There will be also the second Czech location of British toy store Hamleys. The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” The theme chosen for 2018 is “Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics“. The aim ist to point on the way how museum use new technologies and options how they can use them in order to attract new visitors. There will be free admission and special programs at the Sternberg Palace, Schwarzenberg Palace, the Monastery of St. Agnes Czech, the Trade Fair Palace, Kinský Palace and Wallenstein Riding School. Other museums with special programs include Náprstkovo Museum, Czech Museum of Music, Lapidary, the Museum of Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana Museum, National Monument on Vítkov and the Ethnographic Museum – Musaion. A free concert will take place May 9 at Střelecký ostrov as part of the international celebration of Europe Day. Countries from the European Union will also have information stands, and there will be games and refreshments. Events start at 1 pm with games and contests at the countries’ stands. These last until 6 pm. From 3 pm to 6 pm, there are presentations by different EU countries and their partners. There will be two one-hour panel discussions from 4 pm under the banner Café Evropa. The Czech metropolis has succeeded in the global competition and occupied the 8th place in the ranking of the most popular congress destinations that the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) compiles every year. Prague has moved three positions up since 2016 and ranked among the world’s TOP 10 meeting destinations such as Barcelona, Paris, Vienna, London and Singapore. In 2017, according to the Czech Statistical Office, 4,127 conferences were held in Prague, representing a third of all the events that took place in the country. More than half a million delegates participated in the Prague conferences. The Prague Convention Bureau statistics, based on data collected from its member entities, show that Prague, in the long run, has had a stable ratio of international (49.2%) and local events (50.8%). In 2017, meeting delegates from abroad arrived to Prague most frequently from the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland and France. “Prague belongs among destinations very popular with pharmaceutical, industrial or business meetings. The Municipal Court in Prague annulled the decision by the Prague City Council to allow the revitalization of the lower part of Wenceslas Square, which included permission to build ramps into a private investor’s garage. The court sided with associations for the protection of cultural monuments. The Klub Za starou Prahu and the association Pankrácká filed suit against the decision by City Hall to reject their appeal against the revitalization of the square. The suit claimed the procedure used to reject the appeal was illegal. The dispute concerned the Culture Ministry’s role and specifically the intervention of then-Culture Minister Daniel Herman (KDU-ČSL), who reversed the ministry’s previous opposition to the garage ramp. American Airlines has brought the Czech Republic and the USA one step closer, launching direct service between Václav Havel Airport Prague and Philadelphia International Airport. Flights are operated using Boeing 767-300 aircraft, providing more than 2,800 seats per week between the two cities, every day throughout the summer season. Onboard, the business cabin offers 28 fully lie-flat, aisle accessible seats arranged in a one-two-one configuration, plus personal Samsung Galaxy tablets loaded with the latest movie releases, hit TV programs, games, music and best-selling book excerpts. American is the first airline to connect the Czech Republic and the state of Pennsylvania with a direct flight.
