Beneath the reinforced concrete structures of Prague Castle lie the remains of buildings dating back to the ninth and tenth centuries, extending over several thousand square meters. Many visitors are unaware of these ancient structures, but the new app changes that by offering a virtual tour of these hidden gems. The app highlights five key archaeological sites: the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, the Third Courtyard’s Great and Small Excavations, the crypt of St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Monastery and Basilica of St. George. After more than nine months in prison, American RFE/RL journalist Alsu Kurmasheva has been released as part of a large-scale prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia. The deal included Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was detained by the Kremlin for 16 months, and former US Marine Paul Whelan, following the biggest prisoner exchange between Russia and the West since the Cold War. Kurmasheva, a mother of two, was detained by the Russian authorities on a visit to her parents last October and sentenced to six-and-a-half years in jail for failing to register as a foreign agent. She was eventually fined 10,000 rubles ($103) for failure to register her U.S. passport with Russian authorities. However, before she could pay the fine, she was detained again on Oct. 18, 2023. In December, Russian authorities launched a third investigation against her for “spreading false information” about Russia’s military. Security at Prague Pride, the annual festival celebrating sexual minorities, will be significantly increased this year. The festival, taking place from August 5 to 11, will have more police officers on duty than usual, following a foiled attack on a similar event in Bratislava. “Prague police are preparing security measures for Prague Pride 2024. We are assessing the current situation and risks not only in the Czech Republic but also internationally,” stated the police. The management of Prague 1 district is implementing a new regulation to tackle street noise. Following a recent nighttime car ban, the district now aims to prohibit organized pub crawls between 10 pm and 6 am. This proposal has received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Businesses in central Prague attract many tourists, who often join commercial pub crawls. These events involve groups moving from one bar to another, consuming alcohol and creating significant noise. On the first Saturday of August, Kramář Villa in Hradčany will be open to the public. Built between 1911 and 1914 by Karel Kramář, a politician and the future first Czechoslovak prime minister, it is considered to be one of the most imposing examples of Prague villa architecture. Since 1998, the villa, with its unique interiors and surrounding French-style gardens, has been the official residence of the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. After nearly a century, a new building now stands on Prague’s Vítězné náměstí. Victoria Palace, with its multimillion-crown facade, was inaugurated on Vítězné náměstí in Prague 6. It includes 92 luxury apartments and commercial spaces on the ground floor, marking the first new construction on the square in 87 years. The project, designed by Jakub Cigler’s studio, cost about CZK 850 million and was in planning for over 15 years. Most Prague residents are familiar with the narrow passage between Spálena and Opatovická Street, close to Národní třída. This winding, dimly lit pathway with multiple corridors and a courtyard is home to an architectural gem: a rare example of industrial architecture in the city center. This historic site, housing the printing and publishing house of J. R. Vilímek, is set for a major transformation. “The building is largely empty and deteriorating. The owner has decided to convert them into a hotel, a use that has become increasingly popular in Prague,” explains historian Eliška Podholová Varyšová.
