The construction of the largest solar array in the centre of Prague has commenced at the Prague Congress Centre. A total of 2,080 solar panels will be erected on an area of 7,000 square metres, which will save the Prague Congress Centre CZK 5.5 million a year in electricity costs. The solar power plant will be an addition to one of the largest energy savings projects in the Czech Republic, which is being implemented in the PCC by ENESA, a subsidiary of ČEZ ESCO. The project has already saved the centre CZK 32 million this year. “We have recently observed a clear trend in Czech companies and public institutions: reducing energy costs goes hand in hand with consistent decarbonisation and efforts to operate in a more sustainable fashion. Our task at ČEZ is to assist with this as much as possible. A light-hearted muse will take the reins at the State Opera. Ball im Savoy, an operetta revue by the Hungarian composer Paul Abraham, will return on December 31st in Prague. A glass of sparkling wine will be waiting for the audience upon arrival and the historic State Opera building will be festively decorated. Paul Abraham was the uncrowned “king of jazz opera”, whose stellar career was ended by the rise of Nazism in 1933. A statue depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin as a goblin tightening a gas valve has been unveiled on Interbrigade Square in Prague 6. The statue will remain visible to the public for 30 days and then go up for auction. “Money raised will go to purchasing military material and donate it to Ukraine,” said the author of the statue, blacksmith and sculptor Dusan Dostal. Prague 6 has decided to remove the previous statue of Marshal Ivan Konev in March 2020. It was moved into storage and will eventually be placed within the planned Museum of the 20th Century, which Prague plans to open in the coming years. The statue was the centre of a heated debate, including protests and international disputes between supporters of the Red Army’s liberation of the Czech capital and those who are critical of Konev’s repressive role within the Communist Eastern Bloc. An EasyJet flight heading to the UK from Poland has been diverted to the Czech Republic after a ‘possible bomb’ was found on board. Flight EZY6276 from Krakow to Bristol was an hour into its two-and-a-half-hour flight when it landed at Prague’s Vaclav Havel Airport at 10.50 pm on Sunday. Prague Airport tweeted: ‘There was reported a possible bomb on board an aircraft. ‘All actions to ensure the safety of passengers and all air traffic are currently being carried out by Police of the Czech Republic.’ Czech police said ‘pyrotechnicians’ had been sent to the scene in order to investigate and dispose of the suspicious device. It is thought passengers were taken off the plane while a search was carried out by police investigators. This year Prague saw one of its warmest autumns in the past 248 years, the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute reported on Saturday. The average temperature from the beginning of September to the end of November reached 11.5 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees higher than the long-term average from 1775 to 2014. The warmest autumn ever recorded was in 2006, with an average temperature of 13.2 degrees. The coldest autumn was measured in 1786 with an average temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius. “In the last 30 years, the coldest autumn was recorded in 1993 with an average temperature of 8.8 degrees Celsius, which ranked 42nd to 45th in the overall ranking,” the CZMU officials noted. Prague experienced its warmest November since 1775 in 2015, with an average temperature of 8.7 degrees, while the coldest weather since 1775 prevailed this month in 1858 with an average temperature of minus three degrees. The meteorological autumn lasts from September to November, while the astronomical autumn from the autumnal equinox at the end of September to the winter solstice, which is Dec. 21 of this year.
