With the ongoing Ukraine war, tensions in Europe are on the rise. This is both due to an influx of war related-refugees to Central European cities, and discontent over the related rising cost of energy. As bombs fall on Ukraine, European nations are waking up to the sorry state of their own civil defence. Currently, in Kyiv, emergency workers are preparing 425 shelters for use during a nuclear war. In Prague, leftover Cold War-era bunkers are currently kept in a state of readiness to protect the population from nuclear war. Prague’s nuclear bunkers In 2019, it was estimated that there were 768 permanent shelters in Prague, with a total capacity for about 150,000 people. Municipal authorities are obliged by law to provide shelters, and Prague’s nuclear bunkers take on many forms. Blast and fallout shelters are built into hillsides, found in various tunnels, located in deep sections of the subway, and installed in reinforced basements of buildings. Next year, for the first time in history, a World Championship race will take place in the Czech Republic. The Central European Rally will start in Prague with the premiere of this new event scheduled for the 26th to 29th of October 2023. The twelfth edition of the series will be jointly organised by the national sporting authorities of Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. Prague City Tourism has launched a live stream from Old Town Square, where tents are currently being assembled for the traditional Christmas market. The webcam will run until January 6, 2023, so everyone can take a peek at the market and get in the holiday spirit. The event is broadcast live from the Old Town Hall observation tower on YouTube. The Christmas Market at Staromak opens on Saturday, 26 November, and runs until 6 January (daily from 10:00 to 22:00, individual fast-food tents until 00:00). This year’s tree is a 25-meter tall and 58-year-old spruce that has made its way to the Czech capital from a small North Bohemian village of Kytlice. The tree is decorated with red Christmas balls and light stars of various sizes. There are 88,490 LED bulbs on the tree. The tree lights will be on daily from 16:00 to midnight. A light animation will take place daily at 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, and 21:30. Ukraine is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe this winter after weeks of intense Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. Up to ten million citizens live without electricity, while it has already begun to snow in several areas, with temperatures in some regions dropping to -10ºC. The European Parliament, together with Eurocities, a network of major European cities, has proposed to donate electricity generators to help Ukraine cope this winter. On the morning of Friday, 25 November, the Prague City Council approved the sending of a batch of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. The City of Prague has plans to develop a new residential district for 25,000 people on a hundred-hectare brownfield in Bubny-Zátory. This time around though, urban planning is taking into account current crises, such as fossil fuel dependency and energy security, to offer an innovative solution – using treated sewage surplus heat to keep homes warm in winter. For this purpose, a new energy centre will be built next to the wastewater treatment plant on Císařský island and near the planned district. The idea behind it is simple, install 12 heat pumps and channel the heat where it can be of benefit – 200,000 households. Prague’s Pařížská Street has for the first time been ranked among the most expensive streets in the world in terms of rents in a ranking compiled by consultancy Cushman & Wakefield. Overall, Pařížská came in seventeenth place. It overtook Na Příkopě Street, which had appeared in the ranking since 2004. The most expensive street in the world is the upper part of Fifth Avenue in New York. Cushman & Wakefield annually compares 68 countries around the world by the highest rent achieved on the most expensive shopping street. The ranking always includes one most expensive streets from each country. The highest annual rent in Pařížská is EUR 2,719 (CZK 66,200) per square metre. In local currency terms, this is about the same as before the covid-19 pandemic. The 17th position in the world ranking is the highest ranking for a Czech street since 2005, when Na Příkopě Street finished in the same place. In the first quarter of 2023, the Prague Transport Company will launch a test program for the city’s first-ever hydrogen-powered bus. The pilot project will last for two years. The authorities have already signed an agreement with the Czech manufacturer Škoda Transportation to lease its latest hydrogen bus Škoda H’CITY, which was presented on Tuesday, 22 November. Under this project, the company will deploy the bus on line 170, connecting Jižní město and Barrandov, in the second half of 2022 for a period of 2 years. In a press release, the Mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib praised the trial, noting that it is an important step in ensuring sustainable urban mobility. What is more, he revealed that about 50% of the capital’s population currently relies on public transport to move around the city. The hydrobus has a range of about 350 kilometres. This is three times as much as the electric bus, which needs several refuellings during the working day. Bonobo has long been one of the most successful producers on the electronic scene, releasing a number of albums under the renowned Ninja Tune label, topping the charts worldwide and earning three Grammy nominations. He returns to Prague after four years with a concert at the Forum Karlín on November 26. This time he brings his current recording Fragments, the most emotional album Simon Green aka Bonobo has ever composed. It’s also one of Bonobo’s most collaborative projects, with memorable appearances coming from Jamila Woods, Joji, and Jordan Rakei, to name a few. Though there’s no drastic change to the Bonobo blueprint, it’s unlikely that you’ll find a track in which Green doesn’t sound equally masterful and laid-back in his craft, delivering his most soulful and slick efforts to date. Fluttering strings, orchestral arrangements and choir chants are woven atop infectious beats and trip-hop rhythms, sounding akin to the work of Caribou and Four Tet on tracks like ‘Otomo’ and ‘Age of Phase’. This year’s Christmas tree for Prague has been felled and preparations are underway for its transport to the Czech capital. The 25-metre tall spruce tree will grace Prague’s Old Town Square and will be officially lit on November 26th. The spruce tree is 58 years old and will leave the town of Kytlice for Prague on Sunday afternoon. “For safety reasons, the tree had to be tied to a crane rope at a height of about two-thirds and only then can the actual felling begin. Subsequently, the branches at the bottom of the trunk must be trimmed and the trunk machined to fit into the two-metre deep anchor shaft on Old Town Square,” described Tomáš Jílek, chairman of the board of directors of the company Technologie hlavního města Prahy (THMP). “The Christmas tree must not only be beautiful and healthy but also accessible for heavy equipment,” explained Hana Tietze, spokeswoman for Taiko, the company that organises Prague’s Christmas markets.
