Prague does not have emergency accommodation capacity for possible new refugees from Ukraine. At the same time, the city’s Security Council is asking the government to create rules for placing additional refugees equally among all regions. The outgoing mayor of the capital, Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates), says on his Twitter account. The Regional Assistance Centre for Ukraine (KACPU) in Prague handles several hundred refugees every day. More than 100,000 people have passed through it since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. “The Prague City Security Council met on Tuesday to discuss the current refugee situation and the city’s preparedness for a possible next wave of migration. It noted, among other things, that the emergency accommodation capacity in Prague has already been exhausted,” Hřib said. Korzo Národní is the annual celebration of Velvet Revolution in 1989 with a varied programme on National Avenue (Národní třída). On November 17, Czechs commemorate student demonstrations under the Nazi occupation in 1939 and against the Communist regime in 1989. The latter led to the so-called Velvet Revolution which culminated in the appointment of the country’s first non-communist government in more than four decades and the election of Vaclav Havel, a playwright turned dissident, to the post of president. Several concerts, exhibitions, parades, discussions, author’s readings as well as lectures will be held in Prague and other towns or villages in the Czech Republic. Pokoje (Rooms) is an art show that exhibits a cross-section of contemporary student art in an unusual way. The show – which runs until November 20 – takes place over ten days in an empty house in the center of Prague, where students from various universities will transform unused rooms into an exhibition. Each of the studios is given a room, a theme and the freedom to use the space in any way. The result is a site-specific exhibition that brings to life an otherwise unused space for a unique cultural experience. Prague’s gastro establishments beat not only all other big cities in our country but also Warsaw and Bratislava in the prices of the best-selling coffee. “Across the Czech, Slovak and Polish markets, we researched the demand for the most popular types of coffee and compared prices. We also looked at how much prices change over time in the Czech Republic and abroad,” comments Petr Menclík, director of Dotykačka, the company that conducted the research. “Compared to Warsaw and Bratislava, Prague has become the least expensive year-on-year, yet coffee prices here remain the highest. Before the covid, the difference in prices in neighboring markets was even more marked,” explains the director “It doesn’t matter whether the business is in the middle of a big city or in a village. All establishments drink a comparable amount of this coffee. Similarly, prices are similar almost everywhere. With few exceptions, Prague is not planning to limit Advent markets and Christmas decorations due to rising energy prices. Before the end of the year, the town hall signed a contract that would ensure that electricity would stay the same price. The different districts in Prague will not, for example, renounce to Christmas trees or other decorations. But some administrations will replace them with less expensive LEDs. Traditionally, the biggest markets will be held on Old Town Square. This year they will be dominated by a 25-meter tall spruce tree from Česká Kamenice in the Děčín region. The organisers of the market will light the 80-year-old spruce before the first Sunday of Advent on Saturday 26 November. “We have been using the most energy-saving LED bulbs for ten years, so there is no need to limit the lighting significantly,” said Hana Tietze, a spokeswoman for Taiko, which is in charge of the markets on Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square, and Namesti Republiky. Prague welcomed 1.84 million tourists in the third quarter, around 800,000 more than a year ago. However, the number of arrivals in the metropolis has still not reached the pre-Covid level, with almost 2.3 million in the third quarter of 2019. The statistics were published today according to the Czech Statistical Office (CSO). Of the 1,844,332 tourists who have been accommodated in the capital from the beginning of July to the end of September, almost 1.45 million were foreigners and about 397,000 were domestic guests. The number of foreign tourists increased by 130 percent year-on-year. Guests from the Czech Republic, on the other hand, decreased by five percent. In total, tourists spent 4.26 million nights in the capital, up 1.9 million year-on-year. In the third quarter of the last year before Christmas 2019, the number reached 5.4 million nights. Foreign tourists spent 3.52 million nights in the metropolis in this year’s third quarter, up from 1.5 million a year ago. The number of overnight stays by guests from the Czech Republic fell from about 817,500 to 732,170 nights.
