The tenth edition of the Signal Festival of digital and creative culture returns to Prague next month, lighting up the city for four days of exhibitions, tech-based displays and performances spread over 14 locations. The festival – which is the most visited cultural event in the Czech Republic – will take place from October 13th to 16th, featuring work from many artists including world-renowned Turkish new media artist Refik Anadol and Czech designer Maxim Velčovský. Visitors can visit nine of the 15 exhibitions free of charge, with the remaining displays available with a Signal Plus pass currently available for 240 Kč on the festival’s website. A VIP pass allowing viewers to skip queues at all 15 locations and access food and drink catering is also being sold for 1690 Kč. This autumn, Prague City will commission a feasibility study for the fifth metro line. It will take three years to work on, and should be built after the completion of the D metro in 2029. The Czech capital is one of the most visited cities in the EU and with the additional revenue it will be able to strengthen its tourism offer even more Yesterday, authorities in Prague announced their plans to start reinvesting 50% of the city’s tourist tax back into tourism. According to an official statement, the Czech capital will be the first city in the country to start doing so. The new legislation will come into effect at the start of 2024 and will mainly use the income from the recently increased accommodation fee paid by hotels and restaurants. The fee is the only direct financial income that the municipality receives from tourists and with the increase, it has now reached 50 Czech crowns per person. This is roughly equivalent to 2 euros. By reinvesting in the sector, authorities will create a sustainable model for the city’s tourism and boost the cooperation between public and private actors. While Martin Charvat didn’t always know he wanted to become a chef, it was probably inevitable. The son of Jan Charvat, who has owned restaurants in Prague for over 25 years, the restaurant business is in Martin’s blood. European Union citizens with at least temporary residence in the Czech Republic are eligible to vote in this year’s local elections on the 23rd and 24th of September. Czech local elections are held every four years, allowing residents to select regional municipal councillors. In Prague, voters will have the chance to elect the new mayor as well as city councillors and members of the city’s district councils. These elections have direct consequences on the day-to-day lives of Czech residents, directly influencing a host of local issues including decisions on transportation, urban development and tourism. Foreigners voting for the first time should register at the local municipal office of their permanent residence to be added to the voter list. Only adults aged 18 or above are eligible to vote. On election day, voters will need to bring an ID card or passport to the polling station. Now an entertainment and shopping complex, the first business located in Lucerna Palace was a Japanese tea house. Because of the ‘geisha’ hostesses, the people of Prague believed the place to be a brothel. Throughout the 125 years of its existence, Lucerna Palace has been home to many restaurants and cafes, but one of the first was the Japanese teahouse Yokohama, created by the Hlouch brothers. The brothers traveled Japan extensively and were great admirers of the country. They first introduced their teahouse at the 1908 Jubilee Exhibition of the Chamber of Commerce and Trade at the Prague Exhibition Centre. Their idea was so popular that they decided to move the teahouse to the Lucerna building. Today, Lucerna Palace is an integral part of the Czech capital.
