The mirror maze in Petřín has been standing for 130 years. One of the most visited places in Prague, it sees up to 400,000 visitors every year and, unlike other tourist places in Prague, it is mainly visited by Czechs. But while the site is known to millions of Czechs, its history remains obscure. Where did the mirror maze on Petřín even come from? Exhibition exhibit The mirror maze was originally built as a pavilion by the Club of Czech Tourists at the Prague Jubilee Exhibition in 1891. The maze was built by Prague master carpenter and builder Matěj Bílek according to designs from architect Antonín Wiehl. “The maze was located at the Prague Exhibition Center… near the corner of the Industrial Palace. After two years, it was moved to Petřín,” says Zuzana Strnadová, director of the Prague Museum. An exhibition of decommissioned Russian military equipment will begin in Prague on Monday. The wrecks from the occupying army were brought to the city by the Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior on Sunday. The exhibition will last until July 24, in Prague and a few other cities where destroyed technology will be exhibited. The machines will be on display on Letna. The exhibition will include, among others, the T-90 tank, the Šturm anti-tank system, the Buk anti-aircraft system and some of the more than 3,000 rockets and missiles fired by the Russian army at Ukrainian cities. Scott.Weber Workspace, the largest operator of flexible and shared offices (so-called coworking) in the metropolis recently opened premises in the Blox center in Dejvice. Flexible offices currently make up 2.7 percent of the 3.75 million square meters of office space in Prague, and further growth is expected. “Flexible shared offices are still primarily the domain of Prague, Brno, Ostrava, and some regional cities. The water reservoir being built in Letenské sady should be ready this fall. However, the seven-hectare pond with an island will not be used for swimming or fishing, but rather will mainly function as a water reservoir. It should also help improve air quality. The reservoir stands between the Hanavian pavilion, the bastion of St.Tomáš and the Prague metronome. Some of its banks are vertical with railings, while others are gradual for easy access to the surface. Through the wooden jetty, visitors can reach the island. But the water in the pond will be used mainly for watering the greenery in Letenské sady. “Letenský rybník will not be intended for active recreation, people will only be able to swim in it at their own risk. Bathing of dogs will be prohibited, as will the movement of boats, the pond will not even be used for fishing,” reads the website of the city of Prague. In recent decades, Prague has built very few new municipal apartments. The current administration is looking to change that and approved a strategy whereby the city should build at least 500 rental apartments per year by 2030. City apartments are intended especially for people in need: the handicapped and also for so-called supported professions, such as teachers, health workers, firefighters or police officers. Flats owned by the municipality and in the administration of the city districts now total only around 30,000. This is down from 194,000 in the ’90s, after which sell-offs and privatization greatly depleted the city’s stock. The current management of the municipality has stopped privatization, but some city districts, which make their own decisions about apartments, are still selling property. According to representatives of the municipality’s management, the current fund is insufficient to enable effective housing policy. The goal is therefore to increase it, which should help the availability of housing, which has been decreasing in recent years in the metropolis as a result of sharply rising apartment prices for a variety of factors. Pražská energetika has opened a set of eight public charging stations in the parking lot of the Prague Congress Centre, which will allow up to 15 electric cars to be charged at the same time. This is the largest charging point in Prague. Owners of electric cars can use one Hypercharger Alpitronic station with a capacity of 75 kW and 7 other so-called AC stations with a capacity of 22 kW. This new urban charging hub was created thanks to the support of the Ministry of Transport. It was co-funded by the Operational Programme Transport – Metropolitan Network II project. A set of seven AC charging stations with a capacity of 2 x 22 kW will allow charging of up to 14 electric vehicles at the same time. Czech architecture practice CHYBIK + KRISTOF and Stockholm-based construction and development company Skanska have unveiled design for a new mixed-use residential development to transform former sugar factory on the outskirts of Prague. Called Sugar Factory, the 58,000-square-metre development consists of seven multifunctional buildings, offering views of the river boast expansive open spaces – activating and expanding public space, fostering interaction and sense of community. Located in Modřany, the transformation of the former sugar factory is scheduled to be completed in 2030. The new development includes 790 apartments, an integrated all-inclusive 6,600-square-metre public square, a multifunctional hall, and a range of facilities, such as a coffee house, a brewery, retail outlets, a restaurant, a kindergarten, and a boat club, all responding to the specific needs of the existing and expanding local community. The project will be built from a hybrid construction material, called Rebetong, invented by Skanska. The material, which is used for the first time in such a large-scale project, will be used and exposed as the façade material. As a new hybrid construction substance, Rebetong is made of leftover bricks to reflect the unique industrial character of the site.
