The 8th Open House Prague, a festival that celebrates Prague’s architecture, is taking place on May 16–22, 2022. On the weekdays, there is a number of accompanying events – concerts, lectures, discussions, exhibitions, and guided walks. On the weekend of May 21–22, 101 buildings and spaces that are not usually accessible are open for free. Visitors are welcome in the information center of the festival, located on Železná 492/18, Prague 1, where they can purchase the festival guide and merchandise. Together with the laser technology research centre ELI Beamlines, Signal Festival will celebrate the International Day of Light this weekend. The event will take place on the Charles Bridge, where a symbolic monumental installation will intersect both ends with a laser beam. “Charles Bridge is where we lit up one of our first installations in 2013. This is our way of saying thank you to science in particular, which is constantly improving life on our planet. The beam will be lit on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.,” says one of the organizers. “And don’t forget that the 10th anniversary year of the Signal Festival will take place from 13th to 16th October in the streets of Prague.” The International Day of Light is celebrated on May 16, when the first laser beam was fired by American physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. A new take on The Crow is finally coming to life, with Bill Skarsgård (IT) leading the cast as Eric Draven and singer/actor FKA Twigs co-starring. Home of Slavia Praha, the venue was opened by Vladimír Šmicer in 2008 and has since staged several significant matches at club and international levels. The stadium can accommodate 20,800 spectators. The 2013 UEFA Super Cup took place at the Eden Arena, Bayern defeating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes, and it also went the distance two years later in the 2015 U21 EURO final, Sweden seeing off Portugal 4-3 on spot-kicks. Prague Pride, the organization behind the Prague Pride Festival, is teaming up with The Gay Agenda to celebrate the beginning of Pride Month on June 4th. Although most people know Prague Pride as the driving force behind the Prague Pride Festival held annually in August, June is also an important time of year for the queer community. June has been the traditional month to honor LGBT+ history since the Stonewall Riots in New York City in June 1969. The Stonewall Riots, led mostly by trans women of color, was the revolutionary beginning to the Gay Rights Movement in the United States. June is designated as Pride Month to honor and remember those who took part in the Stonewall Riots and to remind the contemporary queer community about their own current struggles for equality. On Saturday, the 14th of May, Prague Castle will officially open the summer tourist season. The seat of the Czech heads of state is on this day open to visitors completely for free. The representative spaces in the New Palace are usually not open to visitors. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Anthropoid, – the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia and the third highest-ranking Nazi. The capital, in cooperation with the city district of Prague 8, is planning a series of thematic events to commemorate this important landmark of the Second World War. The celebrations will take place on Friday and Saturday 27 and 28 May at the Operation Anthropoid Memorial in Libeň, in the grounds of the Great Löwit Mill and in Thomayer’s Orchards. The reconstruction of the assassination in Libeň will take place after 10:30am – the time when parachutists Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš attacked Heydrich’s vehicle. Military aircraft flyovers, including a World War II era Hawker Hurricane, will take place above the Anthropoid memorial in Libeň after which a commemorative act will be held, the Czech News Agency writes. The Prague Transport Company (DPP) will announce an international design competition for a more than two-kilometer-long cable car that will link Bohnice in Prague 8 and Podbaba in Prague 6. The DPP competition’s terms and conditions will be released early next week, and individuals interested can apply until the end of May. In August, the outcome should be known. Until the planned tram route is built, the cable car will provide a direct link between Prague 8 and Prague 6. The competition is open to all architects and studios who work on transportation structural design. The competition will be held in two rounds, with the jury selecting five advancers from the submitted portfolios to draft competition proposals by the end of July. The cable car’s course will have only one branch, and hence the rope will be driven in both sections by the same driving unit.
