Prague City plans to invest billions in new metro lines, electric buses and other sustainable forms of public transport in the coming years. The construction of metro line D, which connects the north of the city with the south, officially started last week. It will be a fully automated metro line, without drivers, with an estimated cost of 2 billion euros, a necessary step if Prague “wants to meet its climate targets”, says Adam Scheinherr, chair of the supervisory board at the DPP public transport company and responsible for the transport portfolio at city hall. Tram 23 is a brilliant opportunity to see all the important areas in Prague. The public transportation company calls it Nostalgic line No. 23 and it’s not without a reason. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed that. After Russian troops launched their assault on Ukraine, Tlusty & Co. hired refugees from Ukraine to help the company join a manufacturing operation equipping Ukrainian volunteers with body armor to face the invading troops. The Prague-based company agreed to a request from the Post Bellum nongovernmental organization to join a project to supply the protection gear similar to bulletproof vests to Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces. This spring, preparations began for the revival of the Čechův Bridge, which awaits the reconstruction of extensive festive lighting in the following years to come. The roof of the Lucerna Palace in central Prague is to be opened to the public this weekend. The rooftop will be open every day from 16:00 to 22:00. The Máj department store on Prague’s Národní třída will start a large-scale renovation in June, which will last about 18 months. The reconstruction will mainly affect the interior, while the facade will remain almost unchanged, except for a few signage and renewal of the glass sections on the roof. “The first and second floors will be closed on April 30. From the 1st of May, it will not be possible to enter the mall from the side of Národní třída and go through the passage. Supermarket Tesco will continue to operate until May 15. After years of promises, the Prague Municipality has made significant progress in the forthcoming expansion of the housing stock. In the coming years, the city plans to start building hundreds of municipal flats, to solve the ever-deepening crisis of housing affordability. The Municipality plans to build about 850 flats in two different projects. The first one will include about 800 housing units in Dolní Počernice. A smaller one with fifty flats will be built in Peroutkova street in Radlice. “The plot in Dolní Počernice is an ideal opportunity to become an example of a modern urban solution. It will be a so-called garden city of the 21st century,” says Petr Hlaváček, Prague’s Deputy Mayor for Territorial Development. The 800 housing units with common gardens and inner-city blocks will be built within 10 to 12 years. The project will also include smaller commercial spaces for retail shops, services, and pharmacies.
