This February 22, the world hits an unprecedented milestone. It’s the date itself: 2/22/22. And this so-called “Twosday” falls on a Tuesday, no less. Thousands of Prague residents are going (or better, would like) to celebrate this special date in an unusual way: taking a ride on the tram 22 at exactly 22:22. The Facebook event sees so far 3,300 people joining and other 21,000 interested. According to the organizer, tomorrow at 22:22, there will be 13 trams operating in both directions. However, with an average capacity of 250 passengers, trams will not be able to host all of the participants. February 2022 is full of rare and special dates. Feb. 2, 2022 (aka Groundhog Day) was one of them because it’s a palindrome; it reads the same backwards and forwards (2/2/22). All the rest of 2022’s palindrome dates are toward the end of the same month, but none of them are viewed as more auspicious than Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022. Lidl has announced plans to open a new store in the center of Prague as part of an international expansion. The German discounter will use the premises of the historic building, the former headquarters of the Czechoslovak Commercial Bank. Lidl expects to open the new shop in the middle of the year, it said in a press release today. Na Příkopě Street is ranked as the 20th most expensive street in the world by Cushman & Wakefield. The grocery store will be spread over an area of 1140 square metres. “The setting of the store in these unique spaces is a challenge for us and we believe that the new store will simplify life especially for residents of adjacent neighborhoods, but also for employees and tourists who do not have access to a grocery store in their immediate surroundings,” said Lidl spokesperson Tomáš Myler. Picodi.com’s new ranking, however, compares which of 56 capitals and large cities of the world are the cheapest and which are the most expensive. Zurich, Oslo, and Helsinki are the most expensive cities on this list. The price of a romantic encounter in these cities ranges between US$184 and US$226. Manila was placed in the cheaper half of the ranking–in 12th place from the bottom. In the capital of the Philippines, a dinner for two in a mid-price restaurant with wine and cinema screening costs $64. Similar prices can be found in Mexico City, New Delhi and Sao Paulo. On the other hand, in New York such a date would cost $175. The ranking shows that in Prague the cost of a date is lower than in Bratislava but higher than in Warsaw. A consortium comprising Solaris Bus & Coach, Solaris Czech and Škoda Electric has submitted a winning bid in a tender for the delivery of 20 bi-articulated Trollino 24 electric trolleybuses, held by the Prague public transport operator DPP. This is the first such large order for vehicles of this type. The deliveries shall be carried out within 24 months of the signing of the contract. Each vehicle will feature four axles, including two drive axles. The drive of the Trollino 24 will consist of two traction motors. Traction batteries, used as a source of energy in the event of power supply failure, will be placed on the roof of the vehicle’s second section. The minimum range of the trolleybus, when running on traction batteries stipulated in the tender specification, amounts to 11 km. The bi-articulated trolleybus is 24,700 mm in lnegth. It can carry up to 179 passengers, including 54 people seated. The vehicle interior will also feature two bays for passengers in wheelchairs. In recent years, Prague has been renewing itself with the reconstruction of certain streets in an attempt to make the city more ecological. This includes the construction of wider pavements, planting more trees, building new footbridges. The City of Prague, the Municipal District of Prague 7, the Institute for Planning and Development (IPR Prague), are jointly preparing the transformation of the public space between Letenské sady and Stromovka. The Korunovační and Nad Štolou streets as well as the Letenský Museum area, i.e. the area near the National Technical Museum and the National Agricultural Museum, will undergo some major changes. It is that time of year again when the farmer’s markets begin for the spring season. They started this Wednesday in Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad. In the stands under the shady trees in the park, visitors can purchase products from Czech farms. The market takes place four times a week. You can enjoy some traditional Czech food without the madness of the more central Prague markets. And with lots of benches around the market, you can just enjoy the moment in the shade of the TV Tower and the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord that dominates the square. The State Opera in Prague presents Der fliegende Holländer– the opera by Richard Wagner which tells the tale of a Dutchman and his quest to find love. The opera had its grand opening on 20th January 2022 and is continuing to be shown throughout the year, with the next performance on Sunday 20th February. The opera tells the tale of “The Flying Dutchman” who was a sea captain who once found himself struggling to round the Cape of Good Hope during a ferocious storm. He swore that he would succeed even if he had to sail until Judgment Day. After seven years, the ship enters the harbor and the Dutchman goes ashore and searches for love. Written by Richard Wager, it is claimed in his 1870 autobiography “Mein Leben” that he had been inspired to write the opera following a stormy sea crossing he made from Riga to London in July and August 1839. The opera’s original 1843 production ran more than 2 hours and 20 minutes without intermission and consisted of three acts. The future of the former Žižkov Freight Station (nákladové nádraží Žižkov) in Prague 3 is finally becoming clear. Central Group, together with representatives of the city and the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), officially launched the construction of a new district in the northern part of the now unused Žižkov Freight Station (nákladové nádraží Žižkov). The developer plans to build 2,500 flats, a secondary school, two elementary schools, several kindergartens, and a park. The first block should be ready in two years. According to Central Group, the new district will be the largest project ever to be created on a brownfield site. Central Group bought the land from the original developer Discovery Group in 2016, who planned to build a giant shopping centre with offices, a hotel and several apartments. “We completely redesigned the whole project. Together with the planned construction in the former Telekom area, the park district is one-third lower than originally planned. This will logically reduce the traffic load as well,” said Dušan Kunovský, founder of Central Group. Near Dolní Břežany, 20km from Prague, you will find the largest Celtic town in Bohemia. At the top, there is a new cylindrical structure made of larch wood that stretches to 32 meters high. The lookout tower was designed by architect Martin Rajniš and opened to visitors just before Christmas. The Celtic town itself is a national cultural monument and has found its place among tourists. “It is actually a very interesting village, which was inhabited from the late Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages,” says Lucie Vospělová, head of the Department of Culture. The construction of the lookout tower began in September 2021. It consists of three wooden pillars surrounding a circular staircase. The whole structure is fastened to the ground by steel rods. RunCzech is opening registrations for Prague Half Marathon, Volkswagen Prague Marathon with dm Family Run, Prague Relay and Birell Grand Prix. The first sporting event will be held on 2nd April, followed by the famous marathon on 8th May, relay racing on 22nd – 23rd June and the exciting night race on 10km and 5km on 3rd September.
