Despite rising inflation, and significant increases in fuel prices, Uber has leveled the bar with its direct Estonian competitor Bolt. Taking a taxi via Uber will be even more convenient than before. That’s because, from 2 pm on Monday, February 14, 2022, Uber has reduced the price for taxis booked through its app in the UberX Saver segment. The new price is a minimum of CZK 75 (it was CZK 85). For example, a ride via UberX Saver from Pařížská Street in the centre of Prague to Depot Hostivař will cost approximately CZK 198 (9.6 km for a 25 minutes ride) after this change. For a short distance, the minimum fare is now CZK 75. The price of the cheapest 30-minute ticket in Prague public transport is CZK 30, so it is economically worth it to take Uber with three people rather than public transport. With thousands of people living rough in the streets, this non for profit organization shows compassion and friendship for those who may need it most. The cooperation between volunteers and the organization brings a helping hand, not only through donations but with guidance and support for vulnerable people. Founder and director of FriendShip, Renni, started the organization after experiencing life-threatening surgery during her cancer treatment which made her take a step back in life and value how lucky she has been. “It was the first time I had felt real physical pain. The civic movement Praha Sobě proposed the possibility of building a new metro ring line in the city. This will relieve congested areas, and facilitate commuting to the Central Bohemian Region. Deputy Transport Minister Adam Scheinherr wants to submit a feasibility study to the board this year. “Over the next few years, the population of Prague will increase by several hundred thousand, and many more visitors will arrive in the city. Without a new basis for public transport, Prague will suffocate,” he said. “Even with the current demand, the metro line will carry about 150,000 passengers a day on the busiest sections between Smichov and Budejovice,” he added. It has been seventeen years since the announcement of the bid for new trams in Prague. DPP is preparing a tender with nine manufacturers. In a December interview, Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr said the capital would need 186 new trams. The main reason is for the replacement of older types, and also the large expansion of the tram network in the city. New trams will be low-floor, with full-vehicle air conditioning and other equipment. “We must ensure that we have looked at all options which include our requirements and meets our extremely demanding technical requirements, and at the same time provides high comfort for passengers,” said Scheinherr. On 4 February, the Czech capital announced that the Municipal Library in Prague (MKP) will soon begin the construction of a new multifunctional building in Petřiny. The new establishment will replace the existing library building in Prague 6, which was built in the 1950s and no longer serves its purpose. Part of the building, which will be designed by architects from the monom studio and the Zavadil studio, will be a chamber hall for cultural, educational and community events and will hold the necessary equipment for so-called coworking, study or creative meetings. The library will be freely connected to the garden and there will be a terrace for outdoor seating as well as a kitchenette for preparing snacks. While the first and second floors will be dedicated to books and such meetings, the ground floor will act as a space where visitors can obtain information regarding services and events. The building will also feature a multifunctional hall on an underground level, where events such as film screenings and musical performances can be held without disturbing readers. The preparation of such a centre has dragged on for more than 10 years. The construction of the multifunctional building will cost approximately CZK 226 million and end by the autumn of 2023.
There are now almost 1200 shared cars in the city. According to the operator of the world’s largest network of these cars, the market for car sharing in the Czech Republic is three times higher than what it used to be. Due to the pandemic, they have boosted their popularity. The Czech Republic’s biggest car-sharing company HoppyGo reported an 80 percent increase in the number of car rentals last year, while the number of registered users increased by 50 percent to over 100,000. “Part of our clients stopped using our services because they are working from home, but other clients started using the services to avoid overcrowded public transport,” said the technical director of HoppyGo. According to company estimates, the potential for car-sharing is up to three times higher than at present. Targeted subsidies for the construction of the so-called sustainable transport infrastructure were approved by the Prague City Council and the funding given will be split amongst the ten city districts. Prague 11 will receive the most funding- almost CZK 60 million. The capital has set aside funding to support long-term sustainable mobility infrastructure projects, which are mostly hiking and biking trails. A total of eleven projects are ready for immediate construction, and two city districts have been awarded subsidies for the preparation of project documentation with expected implementation in the coming years. “Long-term support for bicycle and pedestrian transport has positive effects on the environment and local health, and Prague is trying to support it,” said the Deputy Mayor of Prague and the City of Prague for Transport Adam Scheinherr. “It is important to support city development when there are projects ready. This will fulfill what we promised to Prague residents when approving the Sustainable Mobility Plan of May 2019,” he adds. Since autumn 2021, Prague restaurants have been able to use the city’s system of distribution and collection of food waste containers. Unlike bio-waste – the exclusively biodegradable waste of plant origin, food waste also includes residues of food of animal origin (meat, bones, pastries, etc.). It is even possible to dispose of food waste with packaging in the food container. The collected kitchen waste is then processed and used in a biogas plant, producing energy as the primary, and agricultural fertilizer as the secondary product. Consistent separating of food waste could potentially reduce the total volume of municipal waste by up to 20%. Following the pilot project of food waste collection, launched in Prague in December 2019, the capital city came up with the introduction of the kitchen waste collection from school canteens in autumn 2021. Since October 2021, private companies such as restaurants, canteens, bistros, etc. have also been able to join the city’s collection system. The National Theatre of Prague presents Turandot, an opera by Giacomo Puccini which is based on the eponymous commedia dell’arte play by Carlo Gozzi. The opera had its grand opening on January 23rd, 2020, and returns to the National Theatre historical building for another performance. Turandot is Giacomo Puccini’s final opera and is deemed to be the “last of the Mohicans” of the Golden Age of Italian Romantic opera. The story goes that Turandot, daughter of Emperor Altoum, has decreed that she will only marry if a suitor of noble blood can answer three riddles. If he cannot, the price shall be his head. Her most recent suitor, the Prince of Persia, is to be executed at the moon’s rising. Turandot is one of opera’s biggest blockbusters. It shows themes of passionate love and unrelenting hatred. People can contribute to the creation of a replicable bell to commemorate thousands of Czech church and tower bells stolen, and melted down by the Nazis in summer 1942, from which they made weapons. The bell will weigh 9,801 kilograms and be located on Rohanský Island. The bell will be the second largest in the metropolis after Sigismund’s bell and is an initiative of the Sanctus Castulus association, the initiators of the project told the press today. “The bell has been a part of our culture since the early Middle Ages to the present day.
