A Czech leatherwork company that makes a wide variety of handmade products — travel bags, messenger totes, wallets and belts — never planned to add personal protective gear that would save lives in a war to its offerings. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed that. After Russian troops launched their assault on Ukraine, Tlusty & Co. hired refugees from Ukraine to help the company join a manufacturing operation equipping Ukrainian volunteers with body armor to face the invading troops. The Prague-based company agreed to a request from the Post Bellum nongovernmental organization to join a project to supply the protection gear similar to bulletproof vests to Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces. Thousands of Ukrainian volunteers have joined the troops to resist the Russian invasion. “We specialize in a completely different production,” Tlusty & Co. owner Ivan Petruv said. “We were facing a situation where we had to decide. This spring, preparations began for the revival of the Čechův Bridge, which awaits the reconstruction of extensive festive lighting in the following years to come. The roof of the Lucerna Palace in central Prague is to be opened to the public this weekend. The rooftop will be open every day from 16:00 to 22:00. Entrance fee – 150 crowns (includes a glass of champagne). The organizers decorated the roof in Easter style and created a lively corner with rams and goats. The whole building carrying distinctive elements of subsiding Art Nouveau and incoming Modernism has been finished in 1921 by Václav Havel (the grandfather of president Václav Havel). The Máj department store on Prague’s Národní třída will start a large-scale renovation in June, which will last about 18 months. The reconstruction will mainly affect the interior, while the facade will remain almost unchanged, except for a few signage and renewal of the glass sections on the roof. “The first and second floors will be closed on April 30. From the 1st of May, it will not be possible to enter the mall from the side of Národní třída and go through the passage. Supermarket Tesco will continue to operate until May 15. It took the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, mapped out their most popular sights, then figured out how long it would take to walk between them. So, which city took the top spot? After years of promises, the Prague Municipality has made significant progress in the forthcoming expansion of the housing stock. In the coming years, the city plans to start building hundreds of municipal flats, to solve the ever-deepening crisis of housing affordability. The Municipality plans to build about 850 flats in two different projects. The first one will include about 800 housing units in Dolní Počernice. A smaller one with fifty flats will be built in Peroutkova street in Radlice. “The plot in Dolní Počernice is an ideal opportunity to become an example of a modern urban solution. It will be a so-called garden city of the 21st century,” says Petr Hlaváček, Prague’s Deputy Mayor for Territorial Development. The 800 housing units with common gardens and inner-city blocks will be built within 10 to 12 years. The project will also include smaller commercial spaces for retail shops, services, and pharmacies. Fast food isn’t as affordable as it used to be, and value menus are another victim of inflation and pandemic. The price of a cheeseburger at McDonald’s rose to CZK 39, an increase of about 11%. According to the company, the reason is the increase in the cost of production. “Since the price of raw materials has been rising for a long time, and McDonald’s wants to maintain the standard high quality of products and services, we have had to shift higher costs to the price of cheeseburgers,” said Jitka Paürkova, communications specialist and director of public relations at McDonald’s ČR. The cheeseburger rose in price at the beginning of April, before it was sold for 35 CZK. McDonald’s only specifies recommended prices, so prices for cheeseburgers may differ slightly from place to place. McDonald’s opened its first fast food in the Czech Republic in 1992. A primary school teacher working in the Prague school Na Dlouhém Lánu has been sacked because she spread disinformation about the war in Ukraine in her class. Some students secretly recorded the lecture and showed it to their parents and to the school principal who promptly fired the teacher in question. “I was shocked by the content of the recording. It’s hard to imagine that an educated person could give such a lecture full of hate and untruth to children,” school director Renata Rieglova said to Seznam Spravy. The decision to dismiss the teacher was supported by the City of Prague 6 and personally by Czech Minister of Education Petr Gazdik. “A teacher should honor facts, not propaganda that contradicts the reality. Everyone has a right to an opinion, but not a lie. That is why I appreciate the approach of the school principal who immediately fired the teacher”, he said. In response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, a new initiative called MAKE ART NOT WAR has been launched, inviting well-known Czech and international artists to create a collection of charity posters. The project, which aims to raise as much money as possible for humanitarian aid to Ukraine, which will go to the organisation People in Need, is now teaming up with the Vnitroblock centre in Holešovice, where all the works on offer will be on display. The opening of MAKE ART NOT WAR will take place on Thursday 21 April 2022 at 7 pm. A festival of Ukrainian gastronomy and culture will take place in Prague on May 5 at Pražská tržnice in Holesovice. Visitors can try borscht, vareniki, dumplings, and other dishes of traditional Ukrainian cuisine. Ukrainian musicians, national ensembles and artists will enrich the cultural program. The festival will run from 16:00 to 21:00 and all the proceeds will go to help Ukraine. The organizers will publish a detailed program on the Facebook page of the event.
