In the 1970s, Florenc cut the highway, becoming one of the most heinous places in Prague. A hub for international transport, it’s the first thing you see when getting off a train or bus. Now, planning is underway to transform Florenc into a livable community. Currently, there are three designs in the finals of the architectural competition. In the 15th century, Charles IV allowed the Italians to settle in the region. This is probably where the local name came from — Florenc. Now, architects from several countries are applying to help revitalize the area. Three international teams succeeded with their proposals, and the winner should be announced Dec. 1. For the first design, three separate groups joined together: architects from the Czech studio Unit Architekti, A 69 architects and the studio operating mainly in London Marko & Placemaker. The first two studies took part in the Kyje-Hloubětín urban study. However, the third studio has already worked in Prague, in the Smíchov City project. The covid pandemic canceled last year’s Christmas markets, but the first festivities of this year’s season will return Saturday, Nov. 20. Náměstí Míru will be filled with traditional assortment and delicacies. The festive atmosphere will be extended to Tyl Square the following Friday. Both markets will be open until Christmas Day, per a Prague 2 press release. The advent in Prague 2 mainly includes cultural, social and family events, all of which are usually organized by the town hall during this period. Concerts in churches with free admission are especially popular. “For the last Sunday in November, we are preparing an Advent stop at Ludmila. A spontaneous meeting in the middle of the Christmas markets with excellent potato pancakes and mulled wine is a great opportunity to welcome Advent time. As Christmas season approaches, Manifesto will once again become a place to spend time with loved ones in an environment that evokes an exceptional mood. At Manifesto Anděl, visitors can leave the cold and sleet behind and slip into the heated “Anděl’s market under the roof,” filled with the scent of seasonal hot cocktails that drifts into the air at the market. On November 24, a Christmas tree will light up the street corner at the western entrance with the personal participation of the Mayor of Prague 5, Renata Zajickova. The Michelin Guide Prague 2021 is released today and features 27 restaurants in the capital city. While the 2021 selection sees no new Stars, both Field and La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise retain their One Michelin Stars. The Eatery is a cool, industrial-style restaurant with a large kitchen counter, staffed by personable chefs who serve a daily menu of skilfully cooked, easy-to-eat seasonal Czech cuisine. Dejvická 34 by Tomáš Černý is a cosy, enthusiastically run neighbourhood spot north of the river where the eponymous chef-owner showcases top-quality imported ingredients in robust, flavour-packed Italian and Czech dishes. The stars are given out by anonymous inspectors, and restaurants can earn up to three stars, although the Czech Republic only has only ever had one-star restaurants. Na Kopci, Divinis and Eska also retain their Bib Gourmand awards. Praguers who own the Lítačka card issued in 2018 will not have to change it after it expires in 2022. Their cards will be automatically extended for another three years, according to Petr Habáň, a spokesman for the city company in charge of the card — ICT Operator (OICT). He confirmed this in conversation with ČTK. With now over 933,000 of these cards in the system, about 168,000 cards expire next year. The city first issued the card in March 2016, since replacing the problematic Opencard card. “By deciding to extend the validity of the Lítačka cards by three years, we want to meet the needs of all passengers in the capital, thus relieving them of their worries about handling a new card. In addition, this will prevent unnecessary costs that would result in issuing new cards,” said Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates). All expiring cards will be automatically renewed in the OICT database. November 17 is a national holiday which will be commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the Velvet Revolution- known as the struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day and International Student Day. The Czech state holiday, also known as International Students Day, marks not only the Velvet Uprising in 1989 but also student protests in 1939. Large celebrations and events are traditionally held throughout the country, primarily in the capital Prague, which was the site of historical events in 1939 and 1989. This year, the events will also commemorate 10 years since the death of dissident and former president Václav Havel. The events will start at 9:00 with a commemorative event at Hlávek’s dormitory- followed by a reverential act in Žitná Street. The centre of events and the main venue will be in the middle of Národní třída, which played an important role in the events of 1989, where citizens can place candles, wreaths, and flowers. They wear breathing masks and yellow helmets. Bowed instruments set in, just as the main character from the video hops out of the truck and walks towards an enormous machine. The lyrics: “Where are you going, boy?” A look up towards the sky, then the percussion takes over again and shakes the mining machine in its tact while devouring mountains of coal. This is Woodkid’s video as part of his newest album “S16.” The featured coal mine is in the Czech Republic, and Woodkid will close the circle by coming to Prague for a concert. Back in April of this year, Kohoutek opened its doors in Prague, ready to treat restaurant-goers to a new and distinct menu immersed in Italian tradition. Forget pizza and pasta. Kohoutek has introduced cockerel – which is a young, male rooster – to the Czech Republic. For years cockerel has been a favourite food among families in northern Italy, but it is not traditionally served as part of Czech cuisine. The founder of Kohoutek, Fabio, moved to the Czech Republic 15 years ago with the intent to eventually share the quintessential tastes of his region, Brescia. He knew that cockerel would be unfamiliar to the people here, but since his venture began, it has been thriving. Cooking the cockerel is a long and delicate process, but it is totally worth it to achieve the succulent taste. Alberto Vitale, executive manager at Kohoutek, broke it down for us. “We marinate the product for more than 48 hours, using more than 12 different spices. An original date, an afternoon with friends or nostalgia for the older generation? The outdoor ice rink will impress all generations and kinds of ice skaters. The most important thing is to have fun! On December 1, one of the most popular ice skating rinks in Prague will reopen to the public. Like last year, the entrance is for free. There will be two skating rinks on the Letná Plain this year – a large one with a size of 40 x 20 meters and a smaller children’s rink size 22 x 10 meters. The ice-skating rink and the facilities will be illuminated after dark. The cooling unit retains the rink cool even in case of the outdoor temperature of +15 degrees. The skating rink facilities include a heated tent, refreshments, ice skates rental. Guests will also have access to fast food tents with heated benches and a skating school where experienced instructors will teach beginners to feel confident on the ice. On Wednesday evening, November 17, a flying drone show will take place in the center of Prague. November 17 is one of the landmark dates in modern Czech history. On October 28, 1918, an independent Czechoslovak state was declared just a few weeks before the end of World War I. On November 17, 1989, the state was, once again, independent – this time, free of Communist rule. Dozens of drones will rise into the air over the Vltava River to line up in various inscriptions and symbols of the Czech Republic. The show will start at 18:30. It will be best seen from the Bridge of the Legions (most Legií), along the embankment near the National Theater and the Jiráskův most. The main organizer is Česká spořitelna bank. In April, it already sponsored a similar show at the same location.
In a mission to fight the sharp rise in energy prices and strengthen Prague’s energy self-sufficiency, there are new plans in place for the municipality to help with the installation of solar panels and subsidies in the capital. According to the approved climate strategy, the city’s goal is to install panels on 20,000 Prague buildings by 2030 and gain hundreds of megawatts of power- which will be made possible through the introduction of new initiatives. Soon, a new city company called the Prague Renewable Energy Community (PSOE) will be offering a subsidy for the installation of a solar panel on their roof, and another city company – Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP) – will also help with the installation under advantageous conditions. Residents in Prague can start applying from 1 December. “In the case of private individuals, they will use the Green Savings grant program, and public organizations will then be able to use money from the newly established Modernization Fund,” explained the director of the newly established organization, Jaroslav Klusák. The jury of the architectural competition for the new philharmonic orchestra on Prague’s Vltavská selected 15 studios that will prepare competition proposals. Five studios previously addressed the city directly, so in total, the jury will select the winner from 20 proposals next April. Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) added that the municipality intends to negotiate with the new Minister of Culture on the previously promised co-financing of the construction by the state. The building should stand by 2032. According to previous estimates, the whole build will total 6 billion CZK. Jury chairman and Brno’s main architect, Michal Sedláček said 115 candidates entered the competition, making it difficult to choose 15. He added 12 countries are represented in the 20 studios that will prepare designs. Five of them originate from the Czech Republic or involve Czech architects. “I think 20 studies are really a guarantee that we will get not only a few but many very high-quality proposals,” he said.
