On Saturday, September 11 you can celebrate experience Americká street (and now also Záhřebská) differently. Meet the neighbours, taste traditional Mexican cuisine, listen to Czech and expat DJs and bands. Between 11 am and 10 pm Americká and Záhřebská streets will turn into a carnival alive with music, dance, theatre, activities for kids and great food. Free entry. This is the 10th time this event is held at Americká. The inaugural festival will offer bands both Czech and international, DJs at two stages, traditional celebration La Calle Mexicana to mark the independence day, theatre, workshops for kids and Latino dance workshops for adults, tons of food, drinks and great fun for all ages. This year the activities will spread to Záhřebská street where car-free zone will be created. The Battle of Bilá Hora in 1620 determined Czech history for the next three centuries. The battle will be re-enacted Sept. 18 and 19. About a thousand gunsmiths would have to fight on both weekend days starting at 3:00 p.m. This year marks the 17th reenactment of the battle and for its visitors, the event organizers have prepared period markets and lectures on various related topics, especially on the historical context of the battle or about the life of soldiers in the 17th century. The spokesman of Prague 6, Jiří Hannich, told ČTK on behalf of the organizer. “We expect around a thousand participants from the Czech Republic and abroad to take part in the event,” he added. At the venue, visitors will find out a marketplace with traditional handicraft products and some refreshments. As every year, the accompanying program will feature fencing, training, juggling, music performances and lectures. Tram 42 will become a mainstay throughout the year. This was stated by PCT spokeswoman Klára Malá. From 1 July 2021, two new historic tram lines – numbers 42 and 43 – have been in operation in Prague. Their routes have been planned to connect the most popular tourist destinations around the city center and to operate on the principle of hop-on, hop-off. From the beginning of the new school year, several changes are taking place in the operation of Prague’s public transport. The transport company expects a further increase in the number of passengers. Almost all train operations will thus go back to their schedule before the pandemic began in March 2020. The new schedule and timetables for the metro and trams came into force on Saturday, August 28. The bus lines started running on a more frequent schedule on Wednesday, September 1. The shortest intervals between metro trains are scheduled during the morning rush hour. On line A it is 150 seconds, on line B the interval is 140 seconds, and line C trains run every 115 seconds. Trams run every 8 minutes during rush hour. Tramlines 9, 17, and 22 went back to running every 4 minutes. For some city bus lines, the morning intervals are now reduced to the usual 6 minutes from as of Wednesday morning. Earlier this year, the City of Prague approved the 2030 Climate Plan submitted by Deputy Mayor for the Environment Petr Hlubuček. As TheMayor.eu reports, this plan outlines the capital’s goals to achieve a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. Moreover, it stresses the significance of sustainability and circular economies, among others. With these objectives in mind, Prague recently launched various initiatives to become a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city. Taking a case in point, it established various reuse centres where individuals can deposit unwanted items rather than discarding them. In addition, it reused last year’s Christmas tree, transforming it into furniture for an elderly home. Now, it has taken one more step towards achieving the goals of the 2030 Climate Plan. The City of Prague has recently reported that it is preparing to convert slag produced from the incineration of waste into building materials. The City Hall of Prague 3 commissioned a project for the transformation of Jiří z Lobkovic Square near the Olšany Cemeteries. The whole process is calculated to be worth CZK 7 million and it will be executed by the architectural studio Perspektiv that won the competition for the square’s transformation last year. The decision was made by the city council earlier in the week. The square is located at the Olšanské hřbitovy tram stop and it includes a tram loop. According to the approved document, Perspektiv, the architectural studio that won, has to finalize and complete all the necessary documentation in the next four months. A playground and a fountain According to the winning design, the space will combine the features and the feel of the original square with a new proper park. The complete reconstruction of the Prague metro station Jiřího z Poděbrad starts today (September 1st), in part to replace the Soviet-era ‘Leningrad’ escalators, install lifts and provide barrier-free access to platforms. The last phase of repairs will be the replacement of escalators. Because the Jiřího z Poděbrad station has only one exit, after January 2023 it will be closed for 10 months and metro trains will not stop there The repair will cost DPP CZK 1.29 billion and the work should take over two years. New elevators will be put in for barrier-free access to the station. The first ones will take passengers from the train platform to the transfer corridor, and from there the other elevators will go up to Vinohradská Street. IKEA celebrates a milestone this week, 30 years since opening its first Czech store on September 5th in Prague on Budějovická. The grand opening took place at seven o’clock in the morning and was a big social event, which was also attended by the then Minister of Finance Václav Klaus. During the month of September, IKEA will offer special discounts, a festive menu, and birthday packages. “The store was often completely full and there were long queues at the box office.
