28 Years Ago, the Split of Czechoslovakia. How People Celebrated It in Prague and Bratislava

On January 1st, 1993, Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. A multi-ethnic nation born at the end of World War I in the glow of pan-Slavic brotherhood, Czechoslovakia survived dismemberment by the Nazis and more than four decades of Communist rule only to fall apart after just three years of democracy. Both countries divided their common “goods” (embassies, military equipment, etc.) on a two-to-one ratio to reflect their populations. The split “was not entirely inevitable, but the political and economic costs of keeping the country together would have been extremely high”, pointed out Jiri Pehe, political analyst and former advisor to Vaclav Havel. The split was cheered in Prague and Bratislava, by bonfires and joyous speeches in the main square. “Two states have been established,” Vladimir Meciar, Prime Minister of Slovakia, said at that time. “Living together in one state is over. Prague Has Added Mobile Coverage to Three New Metro Stations

From Thursday, December 31, passengers in the Prague metro can use the high-speed LTE mobile network at Náměstí Míru, Hůrka, and Lužiny, reports Mobilenet.cz. As of today, 39 stations out of 61 are covered with LTE services. According to the previous plan, the entire metro should be covered with a mobile signal by early 2022. Construction works and cable installation in Prague Metro were performed in phases and during night hours when the metro is closed to the public (1:00 to 3:00 a.m.). The total distance between the four new stations where the cable will be installed in both directions is 11.6 km. The costs of covering the Prague metro stations and the tunnels amount to CZK 12 million and CZK 18 million, respectively. The Prague metro began operation in 1974 and now has three lines with 61 stations. It currently has a transit network 65.2 kilometers long. This does not include the long-planned Metro D line. Tour Company City Sightseeing Prague Files for Insolvency

City Sightseeing is one of the world’s leading open-top bus, boat, and guided walking tour company. Established in 1999, the global brand provides hop-on hop-off services. City Sightseeing operates in over 100 locations across 5 continents which includes cities such as London, Rome, New York, Edinburgh, Seville, Moscow, Cape Town, and Prague. The lack of tourists in the Czech capital forced City Sightseeing Prague to file for insolvency. COVID-19 pandemic is mentioned by the company in the declaration of insolvency as the main reason for the current situation. “Due to the nature of the business, it is not possible to continue operating this type of activity, nor can we expect a change and possible improvement of the situation in the near future,” the company wrote in the proposal. Real Time Location Now Available for Prague Trams

The Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) launched a real-time tram location function both in the Lítačka and IDOS mobile apps. Deputy Minister for Transport Adam Scheinherr announced on social networks that the two apps now display the tram live locations and the arrival time in a beta version. Expat Next Door: Gabriela Onofre From Bolivia

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic number of foreigners in the Czech Republic was on the rise. Today, at the very end of 2020 there are nearly 617 thousand people from all over the world. Each and every person among expats came here for his/her own reasons. But what is important, is the way of these people, their stories. Without them, it is impossible to imagine these people. And it is even harder to understand them. IntegrON project, which was born as an independent youth initiative supported by the European Solidarity Corps, decided to collect these stories and assemble them into a chronicle of migration to the Czech Republic in the 21 century. Over 462 Kg of Stimulant Drug Khat Seized at Prague Airport

Over 462 kilograms of khat, a stimulant drug made from the leaves and twigs of evergreen shrubs, were found by customs officers at the Prague Airport. The drug was discovered in a cargo shipment from Dubai. “Similar shipments have been detained several times, but such a large amount is quite exceptional”, says the spokeswoman for Customs Administration, Šárka Miškovská. In February, a man who flew a flight from Doha, Qatar, tried to smuggle 45 kilograms of edible kata into the Czech Republic. Last November, customs officers detained 142 kilograms in seven suitcases from Tel Aviv, while two weeks earlier, a man flying from Dubai had 33 kilograms of this drug in his luggage. Khat is typically grown in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula and is chewed for its stimulant effect. The World Health Organization classified khat as a drug of abuse in 1980. The green khat leaves are chewed and a small ball of partially chewed leaves are held against the inside of the cheek (similar to chewing tobacco). Emirates to Increase Number of Flights Between Prague and Dubai

Effective the start of February 2021, Emirates will increase the number of flights on its route between Prague and Dubai. Emirates will increase its flights between the Czech Republic and the United Arab Emirates by up to seven connections a week. The routes will be operated by Boeing 777-300ER. Passengers will be able to fly to Dubai on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with departure at 15:30 from Prague. Emirates has implemented a comprehensive set of measures at every step of the customer journey to ensure the safety of its customers and employees on the ground and in the air, including the distribution of complimentary hygiene kits containing masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and antibacterial wipes to all customers. GALLERY: 260 Swimmers Took Part in the 74th Alfred Nikodem Memorial Race

260 swimmers took part in the 74th Alfred Nikodem Memorial race of hardy people’s contests in the Vltava River on Saturday. The water and air temperatures were 5.8 and 1.8 degrees Celsius. Despite the ban on sports activities, the National Sports Agency supported the event and the Ministry of Health granted an exception for its organization. The memorial was held under strict anti-epidemic measures, all participants passed an antigen test. As usual, there were three distances for the racers, with the longest measuring 750 meters and the other two 350 or 100 meters. The memorial has been named after Alfred Nikodem (1864-1949), a Prague goldsmith who made winter swimming popular in Czechoslovakia. 430 swimmers launched themselves in the cold waters of Vltava river during the last edition. Swimmers came from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Belgium, England, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Will There Be Higher Standards of Czech Exam for Permanent Residence in 2021?

In the last 10 years, the number of foreigners living in the Czech Republic with permanent residence permits has increased to more than 590 000. Every foreign non-EU national submitting the application has to pass the Czech language exam. Last year, officials wanted to raise the exam language difficulty from A1 to A2 level. Demand to learn Czech is getting higher every year and therefore more unique ways to learn Czech are arising too. In 2019, the Ministry of the Interior stated plans for 2021: “A priority is also to provide measurements to ensure that every applicant for a permanent residence permit will pass Czech language exam at A2 level.”  Plans to raise the standards of the Exam in The Czech Language for Permanent Residence to A2 level for non-EU applicants would certainly increase the demand for Czech language courses and learning tools. The reason for the change to A2 level stated by the Ministry of Education was that the A1 level is insufficient for conducting a conversation. Prague’s Mariánské náměstí Knows its Final New Look

Specializing in architecture, urbanism, and graphic design, Studio Xtopix created the final design for Mariánské náměstí. Until reconstruction commences, the square will temporarily be a pedestrian zone, furnished with Prague tables and chairs, art installations, and other attractions. Traffic on the square will be minimized, except for paramedics, public transport, and local residents. It will not be possible to drive in front of the Municipal Library building. Some Expats Will Have to Undergo Integration Courses

Moving abroad means that one has to face many new challenges especially when coming from a vastly different cultural background. The cultural differences are sometimes so significant that for many expats the cultural shock is too big to overcome. To help foreigners to get used to living in the Czech Republic, the Czech Ministry of the Interior has introduced integration courses which will start taking place from January 2021. Rail Connection to Prague Airport Comes Step Closer

In pursuance of the Prague – Kladno train track modernisation including a direct connection to Václav Havel Airport Prague, the Railway Infrastructure Administration closely cooperates and coordinates its plans with Prague Airport. In December, the companies signed two important documents in this regard. Namely, a Letter of Intent and an Agreement on Association of Sector Contracting Authorities were concluded which will enable the joint preparation and coordination of individual rail connection construction projects on Prague Airport premises, respecting the specifics of the airport infrastructure.
