Pro-Israel demonstrators will gather in Prague on Friday at 3 pm in front of the Israeli Embassy. “We deeply regret any loss of lives of innocent Israelis, as well as the innocent people of Gaza and the West Bank. After years of preparation, a complete renovation of Wenceslas Square began on April 15, 2020. The aim is to carry out a comprehensive reconstruction, which would correspond to the modern requirements of urban architecture, including putting in new networks for utilities. A modern square in the heart of Prague would offer visitors an attractive environment, with a balance of all the necessary urban amenities. Due to the size and the complexity of the space, construction work is planned in two stages. The lower part of the square is supposed to be completed by the end of 2021, while the upper part beginning from Vodičkova street, is to be completed in 2022. This comes after the President of the Czech Republic, Miloš Zeman, publicly announced solidarity with the state of Israel on May 14th by hanging the Israeli flag on the square at Prague Castle. Matyáš Pilin and Jasmin Zakie, co-organizers of the march in Prague, decided to put together this event to do all they can to bring awareness and show solidarity with Palestine. “If we can start a conversation and have people look at the evidence, look at the human suffering and not just blindly repeat worn-out phrases that we hear in the media so often, true change can begin to take shape,” said Matyáš Pilin. On 14 May, the City of Prague announced that it is working on the development of a network of small centres for homeless people. According to a press release by the municipality, the Czech capital has thus far received criticism for the existence of large centres as they reportedly disturb the residential areas in which they are established. For this reason, Prague is now working towards swapping them for smaller and more intimate facilities which will be located in various places throughout the city. These centres will allow people to receive the treatment they need as well as to gain access to food, water, etc. Furthermore, the establishment of smaller centres will mean less people in each area of the capital, thereby reducing the impact of such facilities on the residential areas in which they are developed. The Irish fast-fashion retailer Primark has started recruiting staff for its three-floor store on Wenceslas Square against the background of the reopening of retail shops in the Czech Republic.
