Prague Gets Rid of Visual Smog

Few things can spoil the urban landscape like an improperly placed advertisements. This is especially valid for a historical city like Prague, whose beauty has few rivals in Europe. Prague has long been fighting against the visual smog, coming from many of the central commercial establishments. Luckily, this situation may soon become a thing of the past, as the local authorities are making coordinated steps towards eliminating visual clutter. Their latest initiative is the termination of 38 contracts with various companies for the placement of advertising banners. Based on today’s decision, dozens of advertising spaces should disappear from various parts of Prague. According to the approved document, the current tenants have a notice period of three months. As the authorities explain, advertising legislation is currently very fragmented, and it is, therefore, difficult to determine with which regulations commercial establishments need to comply. This allows for many ads to be placed without proper permission and often end up in violation of regulations. Recently, Prague City published a manual meant to guide entrepreneurs and instruct them on how to obtain all the necessary permits. Prague Airport Installs Vending Machines with Protective Gear

A number of protective measures have been in place at Václav Havel Airport Prague set up to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 disease and protect the health and safety of passengers. These include, for example, the obligation to wear a face mask or in other way cover one’s airways while inside the airport premises. Now, passengers can buy face masks and other gear preventing the spreading of infection from the vending machines installed directly at Václav Havel Airport Prague. Alongside disposable airway covers, i.e. face masks, the installed vending machines offer respirators, protective shields, disinfectants, and other hygienic aids, either in individual pieces or in sets. Vending machines are located in both terminals in both the public and restricted areas of the airport. The vending machine offer includes either one piece of KN95 respirator for a price from CZK 89, disinfectant gels for a price from CZK 99, a package of five or more Czech-made face masks starting at CZK 125 or travel packages that contain, for example, a shield, a gel and face masks or a face mask set and gloves. New Year’s Eve in Prague: Fireworks or Videomapping? Neither

For the first time in many years, the Prague City Hall will not welcome next year with fireworks or video mapping. COVID-19 has impacted cities and countries all around the world, and on Friday afternoon, Prague councilors said the city is facing a huge revenue shortfall because of it. In the past years, Prague traditionally welcomed the new year on January 1 with fireworks, but this year the main event was replaced by a video mapping, as the noise could disturb both pets and wild animals. “The City Hall is currently trying to use the money effectively to cope with the economic impact of the coronavirus epidemic and to support citizens, seniors, entrepreneurs, tourism, services and other businesses,” states the official document. This year’s video mapping at the National Museum cost almost CZK 2 million. The city can now use that amount of money for other purposes that will help Prague and its inhabitants to deal with the economic effects of the crisis. Slovakia Warns Against Trips to Several Regions, Including Prague

The Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended Slovak citizens reconsider traveling to some regions within countries that are otherwise safe for travel when it comes to the epidemiological situation, including the Czech capital of Prague along with some areas of Croatia and France. If people still must go to these areas, they should continuously monitor the situation and follow the recommendations of epidemiologists. Some Dutch, Irish, Polish and British regions and the whole of Malta and Spain have previously been included on the list to which this recommendation applies. The whole of Belgium, Prague, two Croatian counties, one Danish and one Estonian region, and three French regions have also been recently added. In Slovakia, 2,922 cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection have been confirmed so far with 31 deaths related to COVID-19. Prague has already entered the “orange” zone in Belgium, which recommended quarantine for its citizens returning from Prague at the end of July. Pedestrian Bridge Between Holešovice and Karlín

Footbridge Construction Linking Holešovice and Karlín to Start Next Year

The construction of a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists, which will connect Holešovice and Karlín across the island of Štvanice, will begin next year. The construction should be completed in 2022 and the costs should be around CZK 200 million. “The footbridge is now in the permitting process, this year or at the latest next spring it should have a building permit,” said the director of the Municipal Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) Ondřej Boháč. The footbridge was designed by architect Marek Blank. The concept of the bridge is based upon sweeping arches that gracefully skip across the Vltava river like a stone cast by hand. The deck is designed to separate the cyclist traffic from the pedestrians by a subtle difference in height. This provides a safety feature for both cyclists and pedestrians while allowing cyclists to confidently ride without the fear of a collision. Reversely it allows pedestrians a safe zone where no cyclists can impede upon. At the Štvanice ramp, the cyclist path levels off with the pedestrian path and serves as an intersection to allow everyone to safely get on and off the island. Circus Festival Letní Letná in Full Swing

The 17th edition of the Letní Letná International Festival of Contemporary Circus and Theatre began on Tuesday 18 August. “We cooperate with the Prague hygiene station and follow the recommendations of experts. Based on a government decision, we have reduced the capacity of the circus tent to 500 people, where it will also be obligatory to have the nose and mouth covered with a mask,” says Jiří Turek, director of the Letní Letná festival. September 6: Grand Finale of “Česko Běží Dál” Running Project

Grand finale of the summer challenge Česko běží dál will take place on the first weekend in September.  You can choose from several courses, including a family-run and there will also be a race for the little ones. The unique running challenge organized by RunCzech started in June and will end on Sunday, September 6. The challenge “Česko běží dál” (Czech Republic keeps on running) has been a unique way of getting runners all across the country to compete at various distances from 5K through 125K, not virtually but on real courses – a new kind of mixed reality. The main challenge was to run a total of 125 kilometers whenever you’re able, on any of the 5K FreeRun courses over a period of 90 days. People could also choose to run distances from 5 to 40 km. The foundation for this project was laid a few years ago when RunCzech created the FreeRun program – a community service project that aims to make running more accessible and more fun for more people. 90 running courses, each 5K long and certified by the Czech Athletics Federation were created to crisscross the entire country. The First Electric Tram From Letná to Stromovka. Its Operation Ended 120 Years Ago

Though Prague had horse-drawn streetcars as early as 1875, its first electric tram line was launched on July 18th, 1891 on a route just 800 meters long in the Letná.  On 18 July 1891, the first Czech electric tram on Letná (Electric Railway on Letná in Prague) was put into operation. This happened thanks to the leading Czech electrical engineer František Křižík, the famous Czech engineer who had invented the arc lamp. Intended as a sign of technological prowess, it was launched at a jubilee exhibition marking mark 100 years of Czech industry and invention. That was the very beginning of public transport in Prague. The first tram lines were owned by private companies and by 1896 there were already 55 km of tracks. The new technology allowed service to be brought to Prague’s inner and outer suburbs, and the buyout and eventual retirement of the horse-drawn service allowed all future expansions to continue with electrification in mind. The railway terminated its operation on 15 August 1900, 120 years ago. Into the 20th century, the Prague Tramway continued to thrive, with the patchwork of private tracks strewn across the city eventually bought up by City Hall and the entire network...

Prague Considering Ban on Alcohol at Náplavka After Midnight

Prague City Hall city councilors will be considering a ban on drinking alcohol along the two main embankments (Náplavka –Rašínovo embankment and Smíchovská Náplavka – embankment Hořejší nábřeží) between midnight and eight o’clock in the morning. Prague City Councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09) is behind the idea, which is aimed at reducing noise and related problems at night. According to him, the amendment could be approved in October. The exact details of the proposal have not been worked out as it is in the initial stages. According to Chabr, it has already been possible to persuade boats with restaurants to comply with the rules approved by the city. However, the main problem lies in people who buy bottles of alcohol in other stores and consume them by the river. The fine for drinking alcohol in public in areas of Prague is now Kč 10,000 and can be paid on the spot. Drinking on some Prague streets has been illegal since 2008. Most of the areas affected are in the touristy center in Prague 1, and also in Prague 4 and 8.
