People in Prague to Enjoy Best View of Sunday Night's Lunar Eclipse

Residents across Europe will be treated to a lunar eclipse right before the moon sets late Sunday night, where the weather cooperates. The time when the moon will turn rusty orange or red, will be seen from Greece, western Ukraine, Belarus and points to the north and west. The moon will set before totality is over across Turkey and southwestern Russia. A clear sky should offer residents in the Czech Republic, northern Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg a perfect opportunity to view the eclipse. Sunday night’s total lunar eclipse will appear similar to those in the past but has been given the unofficial nickname of the “super blood wolf moon.” “Although it’s a bit of a silly-sounding name, it does have a basis in some real phenomena,” said Caleb Scharf, director of astrobiology at Columbia University. The term “blood moon” has emerged in recent years due to the color the moon turns during the height of a total lunar eclipse. “‘Blood Moon’ is not a term used in astronomy. It’s more of a popular phrase, perhaps because it sounds so dramatic. Man Sets Himself on Fire in Wenceslas Square

A Czech man set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square today, just days after the anniversary of student Jan Palach’s immolation in 1969 to protest at the occupation of Czechoslovakia, police said. “The man born in 1964 set himself on fire around 3 pm using a flammable substance,” Prague police said on Twitter, adding that passersby put out the flames. The flames were doused by passersby. He was taken to hospital minutes later. According to a witness, the man stood in front of St. Wenceslas statue with a sign with some inscriptions. According to early reports, the man suffered burns to 30 percent of his body. “In all likelihood the man did not want to commit suicide,” Prague’s police spokeswoman Eva Kropacova said. “He said it was a remembrance to Jan Palach.” January 19th 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of student Jan Palach’s death after self-immolation to protest about the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops. Prague Airport Continues to Grow: 16.8 Million Passengers in 2018

Prague’s Airport has continued to grow without interruption since 2013. In 2018, as per the latest operating results, it handled a total of 16,797,006 passengers, which represents a 9% year-on-year growth. Routes to Great Britain were the busiest last year with the greatest number of passengers traditionally heading to London. Barcelona recorded the highest year-on-year increase in the number of handled passengers on the route. Long-haul routes also significantly enhanced their performance, with nearly a quarter of a million more passengers compared to the previous year. Nearly 16.8 million passengers passed through the gates of Václav Havel Airport Prague in 2018, and a total of 155,530 take-offs and landings were performed. The positive trend has thus continued, with 9% more handled passengers and almost 5% more performed movements, a slightly slower growth rate than the former. “Last year meant additional growth in both the number of handled passengers and regular scheduled routes at Prague Airport. Letná Ice Rink to Stay Open Until February 24

Enjoy winter in Prague and go skating! Until the end of February 2019, you can use the ice skating rink in Letná for free! Letná Ice Rink was visited by nearly 44,000 Praguers and 230 school groups in December. The public ice rink can be used by people up until 24 February for free.  The ice rink in Letná is the largest in Prague and is already very popular this year. “Already 44,000 people visited it in the first month of the rink, which is an 11% increase compared to 2017. A great interest is also from school,” the council chief said. Compared to last winter, the ice rink was extended to open until February 24th, and thanks to the latest technology, it is possible to keep the ice rink up to 15° C above zero. On the skating rink, there are multiple facilities and services such as rental of skates and their grinding, skate instructors, and a heated tent. Tram 23 – Sightseeing Tram

Tram 23 is a brilliant opportunity to see all the important areas in Prague. The public transportation company calls it Nostalgic line No. 23 and it’s not without a reason. This line is served by the T3 tram which is the most produced tram type in the World and it served Prague for about 50 years since early ’60s. Prague Residents Donate Eight Tonnes of Dog and Cat Food

Prague residents over the Christmas holidays donates a record eight tonnes of cat and dog food, both dried and canned, plus snacks to a well-known animal shelter in Troja, the Municipal police confirmed on Sunday. On December 23 and 24, some 15,000 people visited, the police said in a press release. According to the shelter, several dogs were adopted. Around 3,000 dogs and 1,700 cats arrive at the shelter annually; most of the dogs are successfully returned to their owners, the shelter said. Public Transport On New Year’s Eve in Prague

Public transport in the Czech Republic will be greatly reduced on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.  On 31st December 2018, metro runs a normal service, extended until 02:30 with the interval of 10 minutes. Trams run a normal service during the day until 20:00. From 20:00-07:00 night trams run in 20-minute intervals. The Funicular Railway at Petrin operates 09:00-22:00. On January 1st, 2019,  metro and trams run a Sunday service: metro trains in 6-8 minute intervals plus regular trams. The Funicular Railway at Petrin operates a normal service. From 4 pm to 6.30 pm following roads will be closed for cars:  Dvořákovo nábř. in the section Štefánikův most – nám. Jana Palacha nábř. Edvarda Beneše in the section Klárov – Štefánikův most Čechův most, Mánesův most, Štefánikův most, most Legií Pařížská in the section ul. Bílkova – nám. Curieových 17. listopadu in the section nám. Archibishop of Prague Hosts Christmas Lunch for Homeless People

Yesterday Cardinal Dominik Duka welcomed people who are homeless, impoverished, isolated and refugees to the Archbishop’s Palace for a traditional Christmas lunch. Shared seating for 300 guests at the Christmas Day lunch was organized for the 20th year in a row by the lay Catholic movement Community of Sant’Egidio; the community organized Christmas lunches in 70 countries worldwide yesterday for a total of 260 000 impoverished and isolated people. The menu included beef stock with liver dumplings, roast duck and beef in cream sauce, and Christmas cookies. Each guest received a Christmas present such as a coat, socks, or a warm scarf and everyone received personal hygiene supplies. He clinked a glass of champagne with the guests and shook hands with all of them. “I wish you quiet and peace in soul, inner calm and reconciliation. If there is need, look for help in order to feel parts of society that should think more of you and help you,” Duka said. Zlatá Ulice – Hidden Street in the Old Town

When walking the streets of Prague city center I feel like I’m juggling two different worlds. One world is very busy, with shiny and colorful windows and full of people. But just one step can throw you into a quiet street with just a few random searching for the first world or locals running somewhere they need to be. Like Zlatá ulice. I want to invite you to walk one street you might not even see from each of these worlds. I am not worried it will turn into the rough touristic street because there is simply nothing tempting for business and it has one specialty – it closes at dusk and opens at dawn. Let’s check Zlatá ulice, or in English, Golden street. (Do not mistake for Golden Lane, the rather picturesque street in the Prague Castle.) Czech Airlines Will Stop Flights Between Prague and Bratislava

Czech Airlines (ČSA) will terminate flights on their regular routes between Prague and Ostrava, Prague and Bratislava, and Bratislava and Košice, its spokesperson Daniel Šabík confirmed. “The main reason for the end of the operation on regular lines is the lack of capacity of the corresponding type of aircraft,” said Šabík, adding that it makes no economic sense to operate larger aircraft. However, the flights between Prague and Košice remain unchanged, Šabík said. The last flights on the soon-to-be canceled routes are scheduled for January 11, 2019. Passengers who bought tickets may request ticket reimbursement through the ČSA’s website.
